On My List: April 4th

How was everyone's weekend? I hope you had a good one. Over the weekend, I found a new bookstore, it's cute and had a little cafe. I walked through the aisles checking out the books and before leaving the store I bought a book, The Bigfoot Files by Lindsay Eagar. It's a middle grade supernatural book that been on my list for a while.

As for what else is On My List, here is this week's list of books, shows and movies that I'm interested in.

Books I Want to Read:

I found three interesting books, a music and magic fantasy, a supernatural romantic comedy and a contemporary story about a ballet dancer having to re-evaluate her dreams. These are three books that I really want to read. I really love finding and reading so many different stories.

Book: Ballad & Dagger (Outlaw Saints book #1) by Daniel José Older

Publication Date: May 3, 2022

Description:

Best-selling author Rick Riordan presents Daniel José Older's music-and-magic-filled YA urban fantasy about two teens who discover each other and their powers during a political battle within a unique diaspora community.

Almost sixteen years ago, Mateo Matisse's island homeland disappeared into the sea. Weary and hopeless, the survivors of San Madrigal's sinking escaped to New York.

While the rest of his tight-knit Brooklyn diaspora community dreams of someday finding a way back home, Mateo--now a high school junior and piano prodigy living with his two aunts (one who's alive, the other not so much)--is focused on one thing: getting the attention of locally-grown musical legend Gerval. Mateo finally gets his chance on the night of the Grand Fete, an annual party celebrating the blended culture of pirates, Cuban Santeros, and Sephardic Jews that created San Madrigal all those centuries ago.

But the evil that sank their island has finally caught up with them, and on the night of the celebration, Mateo's life is forever changed when he witnesses a brutal murder by a person he thought he knew.

Suddenly Mateo is thrust into an ancient battle that spans years and oceans. Deadly secrets are unraveled and Mateo awakens a power within himself--a power that not only links him to the killer but could also hold the key to unlocking the dark mystery behind his lost homeland.

From the author of the award-winning Shadowshaper Cypher series comes the first novel in the Outlaw Saints duology—a brilliant story that will transport readers to a world where magic, myth, and gods reign over the streets of Brooklyn.

Book: Not Your Average Hot Guy (Match Made in Hell book #1) by Gwenda Bond

Description:

A paranormal romantic comedy at the (possible) end of the world.

From New York Times bestselling author Gwenda Bond, Not Your Average Hot Guy is a hilarious romantic comedy about two people falling in love, while the fate of the world rests on their shoulders.

All Callie wanted was a quiet weekend with her best friend. She promised she could handle running her family’s escape room business while her mom is out of town. Instead a Satanic cult shows up, claiming that the prop spell book in one of the rooms is the real deal, and they need it to summon the right hand of the devil. Naturally they take Callie and her friend, Mag, along with them. But when the summoning reveals a handsome demon in a leather jacket named Luke who offers to help Callie stop the cult from destroying the world, her night goes from weird to completely strange.

As the group tries to stay one step ahead of the cult, Callie finds herself drawn to the annoying (and annoyingly handsome) Luke. But what Callie doesn’t know is that Luke is none other than Luke Morningstar, Prince of Hell and son of the Devil himself. Callie never had time for love, and with the apocalypse coming closer, is there room for romance when all hell’s about to break loose?

Book: The Other Side of Perfect by Mariko Turk

Description:

For fans of Sarah Dessen and Mary H.K. Choi, this lyrical and emotionally driven novel follows Alina, a young aspiring dancer who suffers a devastating injury and must face a world without ballet—as well as the darker side of her former dream.

Alina Keeler was destined to dance, but then a terrifying fall shatters her leg—and her dreams of a professional ballet career along with it.

After a summer healing (translation: eating vast amounts of Cool Ranch Doritos and binging ballet videos on YouTube), she is forced to trade her pre-professional dance classes for normal high school, where she reluctantly joins the school musical. However, rehearsals offer more than she expected—namely Jude, her annoyingly attractive castmate she just might be falling for.

But to move forward, Alina must make peace with her past and face the racism she experienced in the dance industry. She wonders what it means to yearn for ballet—something so beautiful, yet so broken. And as broken as she feels, can she ever open her heart to someone else?

Touching, romantic, and peppered with humor, this debut novel explores the tenuousness of perfectionism, the possibilities of change, and the importance of raising your voice.

TV Show I Want to Watch:

Rewatch:

Rocko's Modern Life

Rocko's Modern Life is one of the weirdest animated series but it's also really funny as the show follows Rocko as he deals with so many different life issues. I don't know which of his friends is more annoying Heffer or Filburt but I do know that his neighbor Mr. Bighead is truly the worst neighbor there is. I haven't watch this show in a while and I have been thinking of rewatching it.

Starring: Carlos Alazraqui, Tom Kenny, Charlie Adler, Mr. Lawrence, Linda Wallem and more

Description:

The wacky misadventures of an Australian wallaby and his friends.

Movie I want to Rewatch:

Speed Racer

I love this movie and it's a fun movie that's visually stunning. As fan the Speed Racer animated series, this was a rather good adaptation of the show. At some point, I want to rewatch the animated series as well but for now I'll just rewatch the movie.

Starring: Emile Hirsch, Matthew Fox, Christina Ricci, Susan Sarandon, John Goodman, Paulie Litt, and more

Directors and Writers: Lana Wachowski and Lilly Wachowski

Based on: Speed Racer animated series created by Tatsuo Yoshida

Description:

Young driver Speed Racer aspires to be champion of the racing world with the help of his family and his high-tech Mach 5 automobile.
