Fandom Friday: Random Fandom Thoughts #25: Rory, Jess and Dean + House Party (Gilmore Girls) and Eddie's Intro (9-1-1)

Happy Friday, I do hope you had a good week. And hopefully the weekend will be as well. I wanted to know what fandom thoughts are on your mind? I have two that I want to talk about:

- I don't know why but I've been thinking about the Gilmore Girls episode Keg! Max! (season 3 episode 19) well mainly the storyline about the house party. There were so many things that happened at the party from Lane Kim's band Hep Alien performing to Lane getting drunk. But there were two really big issues that happened, first was Rory Gilmore's boyfriend Jess Mariano trying to pressure her to have sex with him at the party. There is no excuse for what he tried to do. It doesn't matter that he was feeling down about not being able to graduate from high school as well as not being able to go to prom because he had missed a lot of days (I believe at least 30 days) from school. Instead of him talking to Rory about how he was feeling he decided instead to try to get her to have sex with him in an upstairs bedroom at a party. She obviously didn't want to because why would she want to have her first time at a random house party?

She left the bedroom clearly upset which led to the second issue because her ex-boyfriend Dean Forester was also at the party with his current girlfriend Lindsay Lister. When Dean noticed how upset Rory was he got into a huge fight with Jess. Total side note, but I never understood why Lindsay didn't question why her boyfriend was fighting his ex-girlfriend's boyfriend? Did she not have any friends that could have helped her realize that Dean was not over Rory especially if he got into a fight trying to defend her. I'll write something more about Lindsay another time because I really couldn't get over her not questioning that.

I didn't watch Gilmore Girls when it originally aired, I believe I bought the complete series back in 2013 and started watching the show then. I remember when I got to this episode and saw how terrible Jess was to Rory (and not just in this episode) and how the entire situation in the bedroom played out. I get the writers were trying to show that Jess was dealing with some issues but pressuring Rory and then getting mad at her really showed how awful Jess was. He didn't become a better person until nearing the end of the series. He had grown so much but that still doesn't excuse what he tried to do to Rory and I don't recall if he ever apologized for it.

- Something else I can't get over is how Edmundo "Eddie" Diaz was first introduced in 9-1-1's second season premiere episode Under Pressure. It's not only the viewers introduction to Eddie but also Evan "Buck" Buckley's as well. We were seeing Eddie from Buck's point of view and this intro was to not only show how attractive Eddie is but also show that Buck might see him as competition. That competition was one-sided (Buck's) and ended rather quickly after an emergency call where they had to remove a bomb that was stuck in a guy's leg.

Whether the showrunners and writers want to admit it or not, Eddie was introduced in a classic love interest way. There is an underlying subtext to this intro which is all about sex. From the slow pan of his body as he is putting on his shirt to the music "What a Man" by Salt-N-Pepa playing during the scene. There was no point in introducing Eddie from Buck's point of view in this way unless he was being presented as a future love interest.
