Book Review for The Book Girl's Book Club for September: Supernatural: Nevermore

Book: Supernatural: Nevermore (Supernatural book #1) by Keith R.A. DeCandido

Edition: Paperback

Description:

Twenty-two years ago, Sam and Dean Winchester lost their mother to a mysterious and demonic supernatural force. In the years after, their father, John, taught them about the paranormal evil that lives in the dark corners and on the back roads of America...and he taught them how to kill it.

Sam and Dean have hit New York City to check out a local rocker's haunted house. But before they can figure out why a lovesick banshee in an '80s heavy-metal T-shirt is wailing in the bedroom, a far more macabre crime catches their attention. Not far from the house, two university students were beaten to death by a strange assailant. A murder that's bizarre even by New York City standards, it's the latest in a line of killings that the brothers soon suspect are based on the creepy stories of legendary writer Edgar Allan Poe.

Their investigation leads them to the center of one of Poe's horror classics, face-to-face with their most terrifying foe yet. And if Sam and Dean don't rewrite the ending of this chilling tale, a grisly serial killer will end their lives forevermore.

Review:

In Supernatural: Nevermore, brothers Dean and Sam Winchester traveled to New York City for a supernatural case and found themselves also investigating a second one. The first case had Sam and Dean trying to figure out why a ghost was haunting the house of Manfred Afiri, who is a member of the local cover rock band Scottso. The ghost seemed to appear in Manfred's house after the band's performance at a local bar. Working this case gave Sam and Dean a chance to relax a bit while observing the band and finding out more about them and how the ghost is possibly connected.

While Sam and Dean were working on the ghostly mystery, they were also trying to figure out the other case that had several murders connected to the literary work of Edgar Allan Poe. There's also a possibility that the murderer is killing people to complete a ritual but for what outcome. This second case had the brothers getting some unexpected help from Police Detective Marina McBain who knows about the supernatural world and tries to look out for investigative hunters like Sam and Dean.

Supernatural: Nevermore was a good read but as a mystery fan, I thought both mysteries were way too easy to figure out. There was no real drama or suspense because I could already figure out what was going to happen. So it was a little too predictable. However, what I did like about this story is that overall it was very interesting and eerie especially the Poe inspired murders. And the author did a great job of keeping Dean and Sam in character and making the story feel like it was an episode from the Supernatural TV series. The author also did a good job of layering in humor to go with the drama and supernatural aspects of the story. There's also a nice set up for the second book which seems like it has an interesting story that centers around murders that happen every 40 years at the Grand Canyon.
