Fashion Meets Fandom - Costume Analysis: Athena Grant (9-1-1) and Rose DeWitt Bukater (Titanic)

The three part seventh season opener for 9-1-1 is supposed be inspired by the movie The Poseidon Adventure. However last night's episode Rock the Boat (episode 2) reminded me of the movie Titanic for a number of reasons which includes Athena Grant's outfit. It's a simple purple button down over a white tank top paired with white pants.

Whether Athena is strolling through the ship or trying to save it from armed pirates, her outfit is cute, casual, comfortable and functional. You might be asking why Athena's outfit reminded me of Titanic? Well, it reminded me of the movie because Athena's outfit felt like a modern everyday take on the dress that struggling socialite Rose DeWitt Bukater was wearing when the Titanic was sinking.

(9-1-1 season 7 episode 2: Rock the Boat)

During the last moments of the movie, Rose wore a purple and white chiffon empire dress with a pink sash waistband. It's beautiful and very feminine but it was surprisingly not delicate. And similar to Athena's outfit, this dress was very durable, it withstood a lot. From running through the ship in rapidly rising water to an extremely cold temperature prior to Rose being rescued. Both outfits had the difficult task of still looking good while being completely drenched in water, which they both were by the end of the episode and movie.

(Titanic)

I would love to ask the 9-1-1 costume designer if Athena's outfit was inspired by Rose's dress from the Titanic movie or just a happy little coincidence. Either way, it feels like a wonderful node to another water disaster movie.
