Juneteenth is a national holiday to celebrate freedom. It's to celebrate the anniversary of the emancipation of those final enslaved African Americans who were unfortunately never told that they were free. According to the article
What Is Juneteenth? on the History Channel's website, it states that, "Juneteenth marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. On June 17, 2021, it officially became a federal holiday."
So, today and everyday is a good day to learn more about the history of Juneteenth, there are plenty of books and articles on the subject. And to recognize why there continues to be a struggle to achieve freedom not just in the United States but around the world. And while we celebrate, we also remember that the fight for freedom and justice continues on.
