Book 8 Review for my Library Read-a-thon: Just Murdered

Book: Just Murdered (A Dead-End Job Mystery book #4) by Elaine Viets

Rating: 1 star

Review:

This was not the best. The lackluster mystery coupled with Helen's annoying drama over Phil, did not make for a good read.

The mystery centered on the mother of the bride found murdered in one of the church's wardrobe closets. The victim was mean to everyone but somehow Helen who was now working at a bridal shop was the only person that the police considered as a suspect. Despite there being a lot of characters in this book, only the land lady Margery was the most interesting character in the entire story.

Helen's insta-love with Phil from the previous book was expanded in this story but with an unexpected visit from Phil's soon to be ex-wife Kendra who was temporarily staying with him. Kendra was an up and coming country singer and had a performance in town but I guess for plot reasons she couldn't afford to stay in a hotel, so she was going to stay with Phil. This caused Helen to become jealous and doubt that Phil loved her. This was just so ridiculous, Helen was acting so immature, she was either avoiding Phil, crying over Phil or arguing with Phil. Why? When the whole situation could have been handled quickly if she took the time to stop brooding to actually listen to Phil. Helen spent most of the time dealing with relationship drama instead of trying to solve the mystery. Which I found derailed the story.

So far I have read four books in this series and this has been the only one that I didn't like. I still like the series and look forward to reading some of the other books, I just hope they are not like this one.
