Description:

Mattie has a couple of dilemmas. FIRST (sigh), her parents are making her babysit her humiliating younger brother nearly nonstop. What could BE more awful than the constant company of a 4-year-old brother who acts like a dog?

THEN, her best friend's brother begins to show serious interest in her. Mattie thinks all her prayers have come true, that is, until her best friend Livvy stops returning her phone calls. Is this how a best friend should act? Will she have to choose between her best friend and a budding romance, and who should it be? A family crisis will force Mattie to make some difficult decisions.

Review:

The story centers arounds Mattie who spends the summer before she starts high school taking care of her little brother who has recently started acting like a dog. She also started dating but it's her best friend's older brother.

I found the main character 14 year old Mattie to be rather unlikeable. All Mattie cares about is herself. Her 4 year old little brother Donny was a pain but what do you expect he's a little kid. He's not intentionally trying to ruin her life but she's all about herself. She didn't really seem to care what happened to him until he started to get sick but even then she was still not that caring. That is until he had to go to the hospital due to sever case of pneumonia.

I also didn't think she was a really good friend to her best friend Livvy because once Livvy's 17 year old brother Nate started talking to her and asking her out she didn't really seem to care about her friend anymore or understand what was bothering her.

Mattie was really a mean spirited selfish person. Even though I thought her parents should have explained a few things to her such as the current state of the family's finances so she could see why it was important for her mother to be working and why they thought it was important for her to make sure she kept a good eye on her brother.

I guess it wasn't until the end that she at least decided to care about her brother or her best friend. It felt like a way to make the character somewhat redeemable but at the last minute. I also didn't find it very believable that Nate would be interested in Mattie. As well as I couldn't believe her parents would really be okay with her dating a 17 year old either regardless if he's a family friend.

Overall, I did not enjoy this book despite how adorable Donny was.
