Book Review: Virgin

Book: Virgin by Radhika Sanghani

Source: Borrowed from Publisher/NetGalley for an honest review

Publication: August 5, 2014

Description:

Okay, I admit it…I didn’t do it.

Yet.

This is normal, right? I mean, just because everyone I know has talked like they’ve already done it doesn’t mean that they’re telling the truth…right?

It’s not like I’m asking for that much. I don’t need the perfect guy. I don’t need candlelight or roses. Honestly, I don’t even need a real bed.

The guys I know complain that girls are always looking for Mr. Right—do I have to wear a sign that says I’m only looking for Mr. Right Now?

Sooooo…anyone out there want sex? Anyone? Hello? Just for fun?

I am not going to die a virgin. One way or another I am going to make this happen.

Hey, what have I got to lose? Besides the obvious.

Review:

I know this book was supposed to be humorous but the main character Ellie Kolstakis' whining and complaining was really getting on my nerves. Is it possible to feel sorry or embarrassed for a character? Because if so, I really feel sorry for Ellie. She was so pathetic in this story, to the point that I was wishing she would get some self-respect.

This story is about Ellie who is embarrassed by the fact that she is 21 years old and still a virgin. She is so embarrassed that she is desperate to lose her virginity before she graduates college. And the most disgusting thing is she wants to lose it so she can take a chlamydia tests as if taking that test is a shining testament to her no longer being a virgin.

I think this would have been funny if she wasn't such a pathetic desperate idiot who's only goal in life is not to be a virgin anymore. But this wasn't funny and it feels like a poorly attempted female version of those American Pie movies but without the humor. I guess I was expecting something a little more from this book.

Besides the whining and complaining, Ellie was so immature that it's hard to even like her let alone believe she's 21 years old. Why was she whining so much? Does she have nothing else going on in her life? And to add one more thing to the list is, Ellie is just plain stupid. She's supposed to be written as naïve but instead she's just stupid about practically everything.

This book does a disservice to young women because Ellie is stupid about sex and so many other things. The reader doesn't get to know much about Ellie besides her obsession with losing her virginity. Well, that's not completely true, I did find out that she's self-centered, shallow and annoying.

I thought this was going to be one of those funny books that would have me laughing and enjoying the story. One of my favorite movies is "What's Your Number?" starring Anna Faris and Chris Evans. That movie is hilarious. In it, Ally Darling (Anna Faris) doesn't want to go over the number of men she's slept with (that would be 19) and decides to look up her ex-boyfriends to see if she can rekindle any romance. That movie was funny, charming, raunchy, romantic and adorable. Unlike with this book, there was nothing funny or charming or interesting about Ellie's attempts to lose her virginity. If anything this book was cringe worthy with how pathetic Ellie was.
