Lois Lane Friday: Career Advice From Lois Lane

You can find career advice just about anywhere and from anyone who is willing to share it. But you can also gain insight from a fictional character if you pay close enough attention.

Lois Lane is known for being a gutsy award wining journalist but what about for doling out career advice. From the comics to other adaptations, Lois has no problem giving Clark Kent and Jimmy Olsen plenty of helpful advice.

Below are two examples of some of Lois' advice from Superman: The Animated Series and Smallville:

Aside from these words of wisdom, a few other tips I've picked up are:

1. Love Your Job

As a journalist, Lois is doing what she loves. She's very passionate about her career and very successful because of it. If your career doesn't make you feel that way then find one that does. Many have turned their interest into fulfilling careers. Just imagine, your hobby could be your next career success.

2. Eye Contact

She knows that having direct eye contact is a great skill. Because your eyes can convey many messages. Case in point, Lois has used direct eye contact to intimidate many crooked politicians into confessing their own wrong doings. They tend to squirm under that intense glare and can't help but spill the dirt. It's a good thing she uses her powers for good, right?

3. Be Yourself

Lois has a magnetic personality and can easily draw people to her. She's comfortable in any situation be it a war zone, press conference, or mixing it up with dignitaries at a cocktail party. Her secret is she's confident, doesn't take herself too seriously and most important of all is she enjoys being herself. It waste too much energy to be a faux version of yourself, embrace who you are and let your true self shine.

4. Be Fearless

She lives boldly and is not afraid to take chances. There have been times in the past when I've second guessed an opportunity and passed on it. But now if there is something that interest me, it's a no brainer that I'm going to take a chance on it. Because I figure even if it doesn't work out at least I tried.

5. Stay Informed

You have to know what's going on in the world be it local, national or International.

6. Competition Can Be A Good Thing

There is nothing wrong with a little bit of healthy competition, take Lois and Clark for example. Lois knows she's a great reporter but so is Clark and that challenges her to work harder to be the best reporter she can be.

7. Have An Adventure

How interesting would Lois Lane be if all she did was sit in front of a desk? Of course the hard work is important but it's also her crazy adventures that make her a lively and unforgettable character. Having adventures even small ones make life that much more enjoyable.

8. She's No People Pleaser

Although she's a caring person, she doesn't let others take advantage of her or her time. Saying no to things you don't want to do is an important skill to learn. You won't get anywhere if you're constantly trying to please everyone.

9. Make Connections

Be it work or personal, Lois has built a network of contacts. Even if you're super independent, it's good to have friends or work contacts to connect with.

10. Proofread, Proofread and Proofread

We all know Lois is a great writer but an absolutely terrible speller. Just imagine you have worked so hard on something but didn't notice a big mistake before sending it off. Proofreading would have caught that. So take a cue from her and always double check what you've written and if possible have a trusted friend look over it as well.

Some Additional Advice:

- Don't downplay your abilities and accomplishments.

- Don't bask in your glory (for too long) nor wallow in others criticism. Learn how to accept both the good and bad without letting it affect you.

- Speak your mind. If you have something to say, say it.
