She’s the Last Daughter of Krypton and one of Earth’s greatest heroes, but for Kara Zor-El, being Supergirl means feeling like she’s got no place to call home.

So when a deep-space school called the Crucible-an intergalactic academy that trains the universe’s most powerful beings-comes calling, Supergirl is happy to go. There, she’s no “super hero”-she’s just like everyone else.

But this strange school hides dark secrets. Just what are Kara and her new friends being trained for? And what does Crucible want with Supergirl’s clone “cousin,” Superboy? Once the truth comes out, Supergirl may not make it to graduation…

Review:

I feared volume #6& was going to end in a pitiful way but thankfully that was avoided. The only problem I had with this, was with issue #35 that featured Red Hood (a.k.a. Jason Todd). It felt like it was written only as a way to shoehorn Jason into a Supergirl story.

In this last volume, Supergirl helped out in Metropolis after the fallout from the Superman Doomed arc and met a new friend/potential love interest Michael. From there Kara was adjusting to life on Earth and by that I mean she had a job working at a café and was doing all the other everyday things that us Earthlings do such shopping and doing laundry. With her life finally in a good place, Kara was unaware that she was being scouted by a mysterious group. Out of the blue, she had been unexpectedly captured, the group wanted to see if she had what it takes to be a student at Crucible, an intergalactic school.

The school turned out to be just what she needed, a place where she could continue her studies and work on mastering control of her powers. But there was something sinister in the works at the school, someone was planning on using Kon-El a.k.a. Superboy, who Kara thought was dead, to further a deadly agenda.

Why is it by the time a series ends is when the writers finally get a handle on the character. This was the Supergirl I had been waiting the entire run of the New 52 to read about. She was smart, brave and compassionate, Kara truly lived up to what it means to be a hero.

I don't want to forget about Futures End, this wasn't a bad story. It focused on a story that could possible take place in five years. Kara had been altered by Cyborg Superman and worked with him to try to find ways to improve the species of various planets. In traveling to Earth, the duo were looking for a certain specimen as a way to evolve the people of Earth. However, they were met with resistance.

This is the first time in this series that I'm giving one of the Supergirl volumes 5 stars. The illustrations for issues #34-35 were not bad but I loved the illustrations by Emanuela Lupacchino (Futures End and issues #36-40) and of course the color by Hi-Fi. The writing was very good and despite the unnecessary appearance of Jason Todd this was a good group of issues. I loved seeing Clark Kent show up for a little cameo but what I loved even more was that Kara stopped treating Kon poorly. She finally saw him as a person and not as some awful abomination.

I'm really glad this turned out to be a good read because I did not want Supergirl to end as a disappointing series.
