Nesting: Carrie Bradshaw's Apartments and Bookcases

I know many articles and posts have been written about Carrie Bradshaw's wardrobe and her magnificent closet but can we talk about her bookcase.

Sex and the City

On the TV series her bookcase was one of the most impressive and eye catching items in her apartment. Although she mostly filled it with magazines, there is easily enough space to store a large number of books. Watching the series, I noticed she stored a great number of books around her apartment such as in the small alcove off her kitchen and in various spots in her living room and bedroom.

Prior to redecorating in the first Sex and the City movie, Carrie's apartment had a shabby chic-ish vibe. It was very eclectic with no real sense of design. And that's mainly because having a well decorated home wasn't important to her. She put more time (and money) into her wardrobe and going out. Home was just a place where she slept and worked from. She barely even used her kitchen, well she did use her oven as storage for her sweaters. So I guess that counts in some way.

But I'm getting away from the topic of her bookcase, it's large with many sections and rows to store books and her well kept archive of magazines. She made good use of the space on the top and bottom of the bookcase (see the first picture). As a bookaholic and someone who has a lot of books, I love a good sturdy bookcase and this is certainly a good one.

 Sex and the City movie

After Carrie redecorated her apartment in this first movie, I for one really loved that she finally got around to making over her place. She was at a point in her life that she wanted a change and her newly redecorated apartment reflected a more mature and sophisticated Ms. Bradshaw.

Her new entryway was nice and elegant but it felt like something was missing, her bookcase. I know her old bookcase didn't go with the new décor but it would have been nice to see her books and magazines displayed on one that went with her new décor. Especially since they were stored away in her wall storage unit in the living room.

With Carrie being such an avid reader, it was weird not seeing any of her books being displayed.

Sex and the City 2

The second movie made up for the lack of books by putting them back on display. Throughout Carrie and Big's (or John James Preston) apartment, you can see a lot of books on various bookcases and on the coffee table. In the first movie when she redecorated, it was as if she wanted to wipe away everything for a new start but it was nice to see in this new apartment a bit of her old "design" style was back as well as the books. Their apartment took on her shabby chic/eclectic style but with a more luxurious feel.

Carrie Bradshaw is a writer and an avid reader so it's easy to imagine that her home would be filled with books. But the good thing about TV and movies is that we don't have to imagine it, we get to see how the set designers create a home that perfectly represent the character. Each of these homes reflect a different stage in Carrie's life and with those changes books were never far behind.
