Bi Visibility Day: My Five Favorite Characters

It's been said many times but representation does matter and as today is Bi Visibility Day and I wanted to show support by posting about some of my favorite bisexual characters. But since I have so many favorite characters, I decided to post only five.

So here's to celebrating characters who have made a big impact through representation and being totally awesome:

Magnus Bane (Shadowhunters)

Magnus Bane is a character from The Mortal Instruments and other book series by Cassandra Clare. He is also featured on one of my favorite shows the Shadowhunters TV series where he is shown in all his amazing glory.

Magnus is not only the powerful High Warlock of Brooklyn but he's also a totally out and proud bisexual in a relationship with Shadowhunter Alexander Lightwood. I wrote a wonderful post about their relationship back in June for Pride Month, if you would like to give it a read.

I like that neither the showrunner nor Freeform tried to downplay, erase or show Magnus' bisexuality in a negative way.

Avatar Korra (The Legend of Korra)

Without a shadow of a doubt, Avatar Korra is the ultimate hero. To become the Avatar, she had to master the powers of Earth, Air, Fire and Water. And as the Avatar, she is tasked with maintaining peace throughout the world while also fighting for those who can't fight for themselves.

Earlier in The Legend of Korra animated series, Korra was very much interested in Mako but he was more interested in dating Asami Sato. And after things ended between Mako and Asami, he then went on to date Korra but that didn't work out too well either. But the series finale had a surprising twist with Korra and Asami ending up in a relationship.

Of course the show received some complaints but there was also an overwhelming amount of support for introducing a relationship between Korra and Asami. It's not often a show especially an animated series would do something so unexpected especially pertaining to a character's sexuality.

Stiles Stilinski (Teen Wolf)

Although Teen Wolf never confirmed Stiles Stilinski as bisexual they sure did a good enough job of baiting it throughout the show. Earlier in the series, Stiles was shown quite often questioning his sexuality. He even asked his friend and classmate Danny Mahealani (who was gay) if he found him attractive and he then later went on to ask his best friend Scott McCall, "am I not attractive to gay guys?". It's easy to see that this was a young man trying to figure out his sexuality.

I remember in the 3rd season episode "Illuminated" (3x16), the gang had a party in Derek's loft and Stiles had run into Caitlin (a girl he had met in a previous episode) who had kissed him. That was an interesting moment because she had been introduced in another 3rd season episode "Fireflies" (3x3) when her girlfriend had been abducted and killed. While at the party, Caitlin and Stiles were talking about her not only being interested in girls but also guys. She then proceeded to ask stiles if he liked guys too. There was a long pause with Stiles appearing as if he was really thinking it over but of course there was no answer given.

During that third season when virgins were being killed, Stiles in hopes of not being killed as well, was so ready to get rid of his virginity that he was totally okay when Danny told him he would accept his offer. It turned out that Danny was joking but the thing is Stiles actually seemed disappointed once he realized it was a joke. There were so many scenes sprinkled throughout the series that it makes no sense that Stiles being bisexual wasn't canon.

From the start of the series viewers already knew he had a huge crush (more like obsession) on Lydia Martin but the show also made a point of having him question an aspect of who he was. Even though Stiles may have been interest in girls (i.e. Malia Tate and Lydia Martin) doesn't mean he was not interested in guys (i.e. Derek Hale) as well. He may not have been confirmed as bi but fans have pretty much considered it canon especially given the information shown.

Harley Quinn (DC Comics)

The Queen of Fools is notorious for her run ins with Batman and for being a frequent resident of Arkham Asylum. It's hard to believe as a Doctor of Psychiatry she was able to be drag down into the chaotic madness of the Joker. Perhaps Dr. Harleen Quinzel was easily influenced or she had always been a little mad and meeting the Joker only brought to the forefront what was already there.

Being in a relationship with the Joker was nothing but dysfunctional. However, her friendship with Poison Ivy (Dr. Pamela Isley) would soon progress into something more. And truthfully, Harley being with Ivy is probably one of the best things for her. Because Ivy actually cares about Harley and brings out the best in her.

David Alleyne/Prodigy (Marvel Comics)

The Young Avengers comic book series by Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie not only rebooted the original series but brilliantly tackled sexuality. There were several characters in the series that already represented the LGBTQ+ community such as Wiccan, Hulkling and Miss America. But revealing that Prodigy was bisexual was unexpected because up until the reveal he was shown as straight in various comic book series.

David is a very smart guy who had been hiding a part of himself afraid to admit he was bisexual. But when he admitted it, there was this sense of relief to him once he did.
