First was the episode opening with Lois Lane returning to The Daily Planet after having gone undercover to infiltrate a huge car theft ring. Thanks to her, the car thieves' operation was broken up and they were arrested. The newsroom even threw her a little party for breaking the colossal story "Million Dollar Car Theft Ring Exposed". I get so tired of hearing that Lois relies on Superman to get her out of trouble, which is so not true, she was investigating and putting herself in dangerous situations to get to the truth long before Superman ever appeared. I'm glad that scene was put in there because it shows that she's not this damsel-in-distress that people make her out to be.
Second was that Clark Kent didn't immediately get hired as a reporter at The Daily Planet when he interviewed with Editor-in-Chief Perry White. In fact, Perry didn't think he had enough experience to work at the paper but Clark was determined to work there and took a little initiative and wrote a great human interest piece about an old theatre that was going to be demolished. It was the article that Lois was supposed to write but she opted not to do it in favor of going after more hard hitting news.
Third was how Lex Luthor had pulled the ultimate con by having everyone believe he was this kind and caring philanthropist and entrepreneur. He might have been a successful entrepreneur but there was nothing kind and caring about him. Any philanthropic endeavors always benefited him in some underhanded way and his business success was also deceptive. He had everyone fooled with his act including Lois but in her defense even smart people can be scammed. Lex was very charming and attentive and never let her see that devious side of him. The only one who didn't fall for it was Clark and as Superman he got a first hand look at how terrible Lex really was.
Fourth was the undeniable chemistry between Lois and Clark. Although there was a bit of a competitive spirit between them while they were trying to find out the truth surrounding the explosion at the space station, it's hard not to see their chemistry. The pilot established that these two were co-workers who were slowly becoming friends but there was a spark of romantic interest from Clark towards Lois. From the moment he saw her during his interview with Perry, you could see that he had immediately fallen for her.
Fifth is Clark's relationship with his parents. They were very close and could talk about anything including Clark's crush on Lois. His dad Jonathan even loaned him money even though Clark didn't ask for any. But his parents knew he might need a little extra money since at the time he didn't get the job at The Daily Planet and was hoping to find another job. Clark even flew to Smallville a few times to have dinner with his parents and work with his mother Martha to create a superhero costume. They went through a variety of looks before finally creating the iconic red and blue suit.
Sixth was how Clark had no interest in Cat Grant. You could tell she wasn't used to being rejected since she's was trying so hard to seduce him. Cat is someone who is used to getting what she wants but this time not even all of her charm and flirtation would work on Clark.
The pilot was a pretty good movie and besides these six there were other things that I liked about it such as Lois beating up Dr. Antoinette Baines' muscled bound minion and she would have escaped had Dr. Baines not had a gun pointed at her. With so many new superhero shows being created it's fun to watch some of the older shows and see how they adapted the characters and stories.
