Why it's On My List: Although, I haven't watched Games of Thrones, I've seen clips and pictures of the show and from what I've seen the costumes are amazing. I've seen some preview pages of this book and the pictures show a lot of details of the costumes.
Book: Piecing Me Together by Renée Watson
Description:
Acclaimed author Renee Watson offers a powerful story about a girl striving for success in a world that too often seems like it's trying to break her.
Jade believes she must get out of her poor neighborhood if she's ever going to succeed. Her mother tells her to take advantage of every opportunity that comes her way. And Jade has: every day she rides the bus away from her friends and to the private school where she feels like an outsider, but where she has plenty of opportunities. But some opportunities she doesn't really welcome, like an invitation to join Women to Women, a mentorship program for "at-risk" girls. Just because her mentor is black and graduated from the same high school doesn't mean she understands where Jade is coming from. She's tired of being singled out as someone who needs help, someone people want to fix. Jade wants to speak, to create, to express her joys and sorrows, her pain and her hope. Maybe there are some things she could show other women about understanding the world and finding ways to be real, to make a difference.
Why it's On My List: This seems interesting and I want to see how Jade's story unfolds. Also, just because someone may share the same race or ethnicity doesn't mean they have the same experiences which seems like something Jade may have to deal with in this story.
Book: Black Magick volume #2: Awakening II (issues #6-11) by Greg Rucka with illustrations by Nicola Scott
Description:
The trap around Rowan Black continues to close, with the Hammer closing in on one side and the Ascension now in motion on the other. But the ultimate wound may not be wielded by magick, but instead delivered via the heart.
Why it's On My List: I read the first volume and I loved it and I have been wanting the read the second volume ever since. I have to know what happened next in the story.
Movie
Relish (On Demand)
Starring: Hana Hayes, Mateus Ward, Tyler DiChiara, Rio Mangini, Chelsea Zhang, Angel Parker, James Morrison and more
Description:
A teenage social media influencer and four teenage outcasts escape a private treatment facility, led by a rebellious transgender young man, go on a life-changing road trip, and discover they have a lot more in common than they ever imagined.
Why it's On My List: I always loved stories about a group of misfits and this group seems like they are trying to figure out their lives and themselves.
TV Shows
Raising Dion (Netflix)
Starring: Alisha Wainwright, Ja'Siah Young, Jason Ritter, Sammi Haney and more
Description:
A widowed single mom discovers that her son has super powers and tries to figure out how to raise him safely and responsibly.
Why it's On My List: I had wanted to watch Raising Dion when it first premiered but I didn't get around to it. I have already been hearing so many good things about this sci-fi series that I can't wait to see it.
Alexa & Katie (Netflix)
Starring: Paris Berelc, Isabel May, Tiffani Thiessen, Eddie Shin, Emery Kelly, Jolie Jenkins and more
Description:
Lifelong best friends Alexa and Katie are eagerly anticipating the start of their freshman year of high school. The pals confront a crisis that leaves them feeling like outsiders at a time when what seems to matter most is fitting in.
Why it's On My List: Has anyone else noticed that there are not a lot of teen sitcoms? Yeah there are some shows like Nickelodeon's Henry Danger or Disney's tween/teen series Raven's Home or Bunk'd but many of other Teen shows are drams that have very dark and heavy content. Which is why I want to see Alexa & Katie because although it deals with a heavy subject such as cancer it's still seems to be lighthearted.
Good Omens (Amazon Prime) (DVD/Blu-Ray)
Starring: David Tennant, Michael Sheen, Frances McDormand, Jon Hamm, Michael McKean, Miranda Richardson and more
Description:
A tale of the bungling of Armageddon features an angel, a demon, an eleven-year-old Antichrist, and a doom-saying witch.
Why it's on my list: I wanted to see Good Omens as soon as I saw the trailer back in March. But since I don't have Amazon Prime, I hoped it would eventually be released on DVD/Blu-ray. And it was, so I can't wait to watch this show.
