On My List: February 11th

Happy Thursday!

I hope everyone is having a good day. I just wanted to share with you some books, shows and movies I have On My List.

Books I Want to Read:

Book: Butterfly Yellow by Thanhhà Lai

Winner of the Scott O’Dell Award for Historical Fiction! Perfect for fans of Elizabeth Acevedo, Ibi Zoboi, and Erika L. Sanchez, this gorgeously written and deeply moving own voices novel is the YA debut from the award-winning author of Inside Out & Back Again. 4 starred reviews!

In the final days of the Việt Nam War, Hằng takes her little brother, Linh, to the airport, determined to find a way to safety in America. In a split second, Linh is ripped from her arms—and Hằng is left behind in the war-torn country.

Six years later, Hằng has made the brutal journey from Việt Nam and is now in Texas as a refugee. She doesn’t know how she will find the little brother who was taken from her until she meets LeeRoy, a city boy with big rodeo dreams, who decides to help her.

Hằng is overjoyed when she reunites with Linh. But when she realizes he doesn’t remember her, their family, or Việt Nam, her heart is crushed. Though the distance between them feels greater than ever, Hằng has come so far that she will do anything to bridge the gap.

Book: How to Fail at Flirting by Denise Williams

Description:

One daring to-do list and a crash course in flirtation turn a Type A overachiever’s world upside down.

When her flailing department lands on the university's chopping block, Professor Naya Turner’s friends convince her to shed her frumpy cardigan for an evening on the town. For one night her focus will stray from her demanding job and she’ll tackle a new kind of to-do list. When she meets a charming stranger in town on business, he presents the perfect opportunity to check off the items on her list. Let the guy buy her a drink. Check. Try something new. Check. A no-strings-attached hookup. Check…almost.

Jake makes her laugh and challenges Naya to rebuild her confidence, which was left toppled by her abusive ex-boyfriend. Soon she’s flirting with the chance at a more serious romantic relationship—except nothing can be that easy. The complicated strings around her dating Jake might destroy her career.

Naya has two options. She can protect her professional reputation and return to her old life or she can flirt with the unknown and stay with the person who makes her feel like she's finally living again.

Book: The Artifact Hunters by Janet Fox

Description:

Isaac Wolf can travel through time. But he's also in a race against it.

With tensions in Prague rising at the height of World War II, Isaac Wolf is forced to leave home with nothing more than a small backpack and a pendant in the shape of an eternity knot. His parents believe the pendant will keep him safe--if he can discover what it really means.

This clue leads him to Rookskill Castle, home of the Special Alternative Intelligence Unit where gifted children can learn to harness their powers to support the Allies' cause. With the help of his new friends and an antique watch that allows him to travel through time, Isaac must unlock his own powers and uncover the true meaning of the eternity knot. The only way he can do that, though, is by hunting for a series of magical artifacts that are scattered throughout the past . . . and Isaac isn't the only artifact hunter. Soon he finds himself in a race against a threat just as deadly as the war itself--one that his parents had been trying to shield him from all along.

TV Shows

Rewatch:

Bitten

I haven't found any new supernatural TV shows to watch, so I'm going to rewatch one of my favorite shows, Bitten. This was such a good show, it's full of drama, suspense and plenty of werewolves and not to mention witches.

Starring: Laura Vandervoort, Greyston Holt, Greg Bryk, Steve Lund, Michael Xavier, Genelle Williams and more

Description:

Elena Michaels navigates her life between the human world and the werewolf world as the only female of the species.

New Show:

WandaVision (Disney+)

I don't know why I've waited to watch WandaVision but I'm going to start watching it this week. I've been hearing a lot of good things about it.

Starring: Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Teyonah Parris, Kathryn Hahn, Randall Park, Kat Dennings, Josh Stamberg and more

Description:

A blend of classic television and the Marvel Cinematic Universe in which Wanda Maximoff and Vision, two super-powered beings living their ideal suburban lives, begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems.

Movies

I love finding different and interesting movies and Paterson and Velvet Buzzsaw certainly seem like two very different movies. The first seems like a quiet drama about an aspiring writer, while the second is a horror movie centered around art. They seem very interesting and I can't wait to watch 'em.

Paterson (Amazon Prime)

Starring: Adam Driver, Golshifteh Farahani, Rizwan Manji, Jaden Michael, Barry Shabaka Henley, Trev Parham, Troy T. Parham, Chasten Harmon, Method Man and more

Director: Jim Jarmusch

Description:

Paterson is a hardworking bus driver in Paterson, N.J., who follows the same routine every day. He observes the city and listens to fragments of conversations while picking up and dropping off his passengers. Paterson also writes heartfelt poems in a notebook, walks his dog and drinks one beer in a bar after his shift is over. Waiting for him at home is Laura, his beloved wife who champions his gift for writing.

Velvet Buzzsaw (Netflix)

Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, Zawe Ashton, Tom Sturridge, Toni Collette, Natalia Dyer, Daveed Diggs, John Malkovich and more

Director: Dan Gilroy

Description:

After paintings by an unknown artist are discovered, a supernatural force enacts revenge on those who have allowed their greed to get in the way of art.
