It's Friday, what fandom thoughts are on your mind?
- I have a friend who started watching 9-1-1 and he keeps asking me what season does Evan "Buck" Buckley and Edmundo "Eddie" Diaz get together. At first, I didn't have the heart to tell him they don't but I finally told him that so far those two are not together and probably never will. However, you would think that it should have happened at some point with the way the writing for these characters and how their friendship is depicted at times with a very intimate feel especially in comparison to the other friendships on the show.
It's hard not to notice Eddie has a deeper connection with Buck than he does with his girlfriend Dr. Ana Flores. And Buck seems to lose it whenever Eddie is hurt or in danger. His reaction in regards to Eddie being in danger is noticeably different compared to how he reacts when his other friends and team members are hurt or in danger. It makes no sense that Eddie and Buck being in a relationship together isn't an option or a possibility at this point. The writing, acting and directing choices have created an interesting complex and nuanced relationship between Eddie and Buck that feels like it's way more than friendship between these two.
(Eddie and Buck 9-1-1 season 3 episode 3: The Searchers)
There are fans that feel like they only gave the two characters girlfriends (Dr. Ana Flores and Taylor Kelly) in the recently ended fourth season as a way to stop fans from wanting Buck and Eddie to be together. Whether that's the reason or not, it reminds me of Teen Wolf and what the show did in the fourth season by giving Derek Hale and Stiles Stilinski girlfriends (Braedon and Malia Tate) to try to curb fan interest in the non-canon relationship. The show also reduced the number of scenes Derek and Stiles usually shared together which sort of threw off the dynamics of the show which unfortunately was another factor in the low ratings which were steadily decreasing throughout the fourth season and the remainder of the series. Sadly, Teen Wolf never regained the high rating it once held. Hopefully, that won't happen to 9-1-1 but there does seem to be a growing number of fans are starting to complain online about how the show seems to be baiting fans with Buck and Eddie. Whether or not fan complaints will factor into low rating for the upcoming fifth season, I guess we'll have to wait and see.
- Another firefighter show I've been watching is Station 19 and this show is really good. I just finished watching the last episode of the recently ended fourth season and this show just keeps getting better and better. Although, I thought the first season started out a little slow and it felt like both the writing and the acting were still in the process of figuring out how the show and the characters should be. During the first season, I thought only a few of the characters had distinct personalities but since then, all of the characters have been written so much better as the show progressed. And by the second season, the show really moved along and it quickly became one of my favorite shows.
Station 19 really knows how to draw in the viewers with so much drama, suspense and unexpected twists. I can't wait for the upcoming fifth season especially with the way the fourth season finale ended. I still love watching 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Lone Star but it's nice to have another firefighter show to watch and I like that it adds something different from the other two emergency dramas.
- Recently some unofficial behind the scenes pictures of the new Supergirl's costume from the upcoming The Flash movie were posted online and I couldn't help thinking how awful the design was. It really doesn't flatter the actress Sasha Calle at all. I know a lot of fans have suggested that this costume is based on the Lara Kent Supergirl in the comics and it's a possibility they're right but all that aside this is still a terrible look. I do hope that the costume will look better on screen than what's been shown in random pictures someone had taken on set.
