Quote: Maddie and Evan Buckley

Maddie: I think it’s supposed to be romantic. You know, the idea that the guy would work hard every day, making her fall in love with him over and over again. So every day is the best day ever.

Buck: Is that really love? Right? Sh-Shouldn’t it be when you’re at your worst, they’re at their worst, you have every reason to give up, and you still decide you want to try again?

Maddie: I guess it is.

~ Maddie and Evan "Buck" Buckley, 9-1-1 season 5 episode 18: Starting Over

Everything Buck said in the fifth season finale, perfectly describes the relationships between Maddie and Howard "Chimney" Han and Buck and Edmundo "Eddie" Diaz. Because both relationships have been through so much yet there is something so special about both situations. They have all been at their worst but they never give up on each other.

At this point in the series, Maddie and Chimney were still broken up but the undeniable love they have for each other was still very much there. And I think what her brother said started to make Maddie think about her situation. Which is why it didn't feel rushed when her and Chimney got back together in the sixth season premiere episode Let the Games Begin. As soon as Chimney and Maddie met in the second season episode Dosed, there was a spark between them that thankfully was allowed to grow from friendship to romance. Which is why I'm so looking forward to seeing if they actually get engaged or not in these last two episodes of the sixth season. Even if they don't, their love is so sweet and amazing that no matter what, they will be happy together.

As for Buck and Eddie, they may just be best friends but they're so much more than that. Same with Chimney and Maddie as soon as Buck and Eddie met in the second season premiere episode Under Pressure, there was a spark between them. Although it was jealousy on Buck's side and curiosity on Eddie's, there was truly something there. And they were also allowed to grow into something special.

Thoughout the series, they have been through a lot yet they are always there for each other no matter what. Even a little hiccup in their relationship during the whole lawsuit era didn't last long and they were back to being as close as ever. Which is why it's still disappointing that they are not in a romantic relationship. I always found it interesting that neither Buck or Eddie have ever put in any real effort with any of their numerous random love interests. They coast along not really putting in too much time and effort to make these relationships better. However, they make all the time and effort for each other. Plus, they never seem to have any chemistry with any of the love interests they've had throughout the series. Yet they have perfect chemistry with each other. Hopefully, one day the Showrunner and writers will see how special Buck and Eddie's connection is and put them together.
