Review:

Captain Marvel volume #1 is a great read, it continues where the last series left off with Carol Danvers still feeling out of sorts after what happened in Captain Marvel vol #3 and the Avengers: The Enemy Within.

Earlier, her and Iron Patriot (James Rhodes) had rescued an alien space pod which held a young woman in a stasis chamber. This discovery would lead to Captain Marvel finding a whole new space adventure along with a new sense of purpose.

According to Iron Man, the young woman was a Nowlanian and taking her back home would be difficult since her home world was destroyed by the Builders (see Captain Marvel vol #3). They were relocated but no one knows where that is. He also brought up the idea that space needs more of an Avengers presence.

Despite growing closer to James and her connection to all her friends on Earth, Carol needs some time away. This opportunity to travel into space in one of Iron Man's ships is just what she needed and going with Carole is her cat Chewie.

Her space travel was nearly cut short when she was attacked by Haffensye ships. She was putting up a good fight when she surprisingly received some help from the Guardians of the Galaxy. While repairing Carol's ship and trying to attack her cat, Rocket Raccoon inadvertently caused the Nowlanian young woman to wake up from her stasis chamber.

The Nowlanian young woman named Tic completely freaked out after finding out Star-Lord's Spartax heritage and stole Carol's ship to attack the Guardian's ship. After Carol got her ship back from Tic, she got a better understanding of what Tic and her people have been going through and why she doesn't like the Spartax.

Captain Marvel was hoping to help the Nowlanians, but once she arrived on their planet, she received a not so warm welcome. They were happy that Tic was returned safe and sound but didn't want any help from Captain Marvel. But they needed help especially since a lot of the people have become mysteriously sick and the Spartax Emperor J'Son wanted the healthy people to leave the planet since it was believe it was making the people sick.

Carol is not exactly the best at diplomacy, so she goes with her strengths by trying to find a way to help the Nowlanians. She ended up stumbling upon the cause of the sickness when she was working with a small group of Nowlanians in tracking a Haffensye ship that left the planet. But the Nowlanians' problems were far from over because the Emperor J'Son was planning a surprise attack.

Can Captain Marvel save the day or is it all over for the Nowlanians?

This story was amazing because helping the Nowlanians was a delicate situation and you get to see Carol deal with problems she couldn't just punch her way out of. This was a much better read than the third volume of the previous Captain Marvel series. I thought the writing and artwork were perfect. I always felt like Captain Marvel (or in her previous title as Ms. Marvel) worked better off in space. She's adventurous and needs a challenge which she is more likely to find if she's tackling problems in space which this first volume had plenty of.

I think this first volume is a great starting point for new Captain Marvel fans if they are interested in reading the comic books after seeing the movie.
