Books I Want to Read:
On My List are three middle grade books that I really want to read that focus on babysitting, Indian mythology and the supernatural. How could I not want to read these books? They each seem like a good read.
Book: Best Babysitters Ever (Best Babysitters Ever book #1) by Caroline Carla
Description:
A funny new middle grade series about three 12-year-old best friends who start a babysitting club in their small California town. Perfect for fans of series like Whatever After and the Dork Diaries.
Once upon a time, a girl named Kristy Thomas had a great idea: to form The Baby-Sitters Club with her best friends. And now twelve-year-old Malia Twiggs has had a great idea too. Technically, she had Kristy’s idea. (And technically, little kids seem gross and annoying, but a paycheck is a paycheck). After a little convincing, Malia and her friends Dot and Bree start a babysitting club to earn funds for an epic birthday bash. But babysitting definitely isn’t what they thought it would be.
Three friends. No parents. Unlimited snacks. And, okay, occasionally watching other people’s children. What could possibly go wrong?
Book: The Serpent's Secret (Kiranmala and the Kingdom Beyond book #1) by Sayantani DasGupta
Description:
From New York Times bestselling author comes a world packed with action and adventure, perfect for fans of Rick Riordan and Soman Chainani.
MEET KIRANMALA: INTERDIMENSIONAL DEMON SLAYER
(Only she doesn't know it yet.)
On the morning of her 12th birthday, Kiranmala is just a regular sixth grader living in Parsippany, New Jersey...until her parents mysteriously vanish and a drooling rakkhosh demon slams through her kitchen, determined to eat her alive. Turns out there might be some truth to her parents' fantastical stories -- like how Kiranmala is a real Indian princess and how she comes from a secret place not of this world.
To complicate matters, two crush-worthy princes ring her doorbell, insisting they've come to rescue her. Suddenly, Kiran is swept into another dimension full of magic, winged horses, moving maps, and annoying, talking birds. There she must solve riddles and battle demons all while avoiding the Serpent King of the underworld and the Rakkhoshi Queen in order to find her parents and basically save New Jersey, her entire world, and everything beyond it...
Book: A Properly Unhaunted Place (A Properly Unhaunted Place book #1) by William Alexander and illustrations by Kelly Murphy
Description:
From National Book Award–winning author William Alexander comes “a fun and fast-paced supernatural mystery with secret depths” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review).
Rosa Ramona Díaz has a very special talent. She comes from a family of librarians who specialize in ghost appeasement. So she can’t understand why her mother has moved them to Ingot, the world’s only unhaunted town. What are they supposed to do there, with no poltergeists to quiet and no specters to soothe? Frankly, Rosa doesn’t think anyone should want to live in a place where the biggest attraction is a woefully inaccurate Renaissance Festival.
But Jasper Chevalier has always lived in Ingot, working at the festival while his parents hold court. Jasper has never seen a ghost, and can’t imagine his unhaunted town any other way…until an angry apparition thunders into the fairgrounds and turns Ingot upside down. Jasper is astonished…and Rosa is delighted.
Mist is building in the hills, and something otherworldly is about to be unleashed. Rosa will need all her ghost appeasement tools—and a little help from Jasper—to try to rein in the angry ghosts in this hilariously spooky adventure.
TV Shows I Want to Watch:
On My List are three TV shows that have recently caught my interest: Hangin' with Mr. Cooper, Muppets Now and Run. Lately, I've been rewatching a lot of old TV shows and and so far I've watched The Cosby Show, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, A Different World and Rhoda. And now I want to rewatch Hangin' with Mr. Cooper since it's on Hulu. I always thought it was a good show but that's overlooked by fans.
As for the other two shows, they're fairly new, Muppets Now premiered July 31st on Disney+ and will feature six episodes that are released on Fridays July 31st to Sept. 4th. Meanwhile Run already premiered April 12th on HBO and all seven episodes of the series have aired. I just found this show and watched the first episode this morning which I really liked. I'll post a review for the entire series once I'm finished.
Hangin' with Mr. Cooper (Hulu)
Starring: Mark Curry, Holly Robinson Peete, Marquise Wilson, Raven-Symoné, Sandra Quarterman, Omar Gooding, Nell Carter, Dawn Lewis and more
Description:
Former NBA player Mark Cooper becomes a dedicated teacher and basketball coach in Oakland after his playing career ends. When he's not dealing with his students and players, Mark spends time with his roommates and friends.
Muppets Now (Disney+)
Description:
Muppets Now is The Muppets Studio’s first unscripted series and first original series for Disney+. In the six-episode season, Scooter rushes to make his delivery deadlines and upload the brand-new Muppet series for streaming. They are due now, and he’ll need to navigate whatever obstacles, distractions, and complications the rest of the Muppet gang throws at him.
Overflowing with spontaneous lunacy, surprising guest stars and more frogs, pigs, bears (and whatevers) than legally allowed, the Muppets cut loose in Muppets Now with the kind of startling silliness and chaotic fun that made them famous. From zany experiments with Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker to lifestyle tips from the fabulous Miss Piggy, each episode is packed with hilarious segments, hosted by the Muppets showcasing what the Muppets do best.
Run (HBO)
Starring: Merritt Wever, Domhnall Gleeson, Rich Sommer, Archie Panjabi, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Tamara Podemski, Shaun J. Brown and more
Description:
A woman whose humdrum life gets turned upside down when she receives a text from her college sweetheart inviting her to drop everything and meet him in New York to fulfill the pact they made 17 years earlier.
