Fandom Friday: Random Fandom Thoughts #20: Lydia Martin and Jordan Parrish, Bonnie Bennett, Buck, Eddie and Lucy

Happy Friday! It's been an interesting week, which is why I'd love to know what are some of your fandom thoughts?

- I'm actually starting to get excited about the upcoming Teen Wolf movie. It's going to air on Paramount+ and at the moment there is not official premiere date. I'm really hoping it will have a good script and a bigger budget to really make this a good movie. I also hope that Lydia Martin and Jordan Parrish will finally get a chance to be together because I thought they had so much chemistry in the show. It will be interesting to see what these characters have been up to since the series ended. I'm hoping Lydia wouldn't still be with her high school boyfriend Stiles Stilinski because once they got together in the finale season they didn't really have any romantic chemistry together. I always thought they were better as friends. I guess I'll see, once the movie airs.

- Bonnie Bennett from The Vampire Diaries was the only character I thought should have had a spinoff. Her character was so interesting but despite being a powerful witch and a good friend it felt like at times she was sidelined for less interesting characters' and their storylines. I would have loved to have seen Bonnie as the lead of her own show dealing with even more supernatural problems.

- I don't think I'll get over the 9-1-1 Showrunners and writers making numerous claims that the show doesn't queerbait Edmundo "Eddie" Diaz and Evan "Buck" Buckley. Which despite those claims that's exactly what the show continues to do yet still say there is no romantic connotations applied to their characters. And to make matters worse, the fifth season midseason premiere introduced a new firefighter character Lucy Donato (played by actress Arielle Kebbel), who's described as being the "female Buck". And not so surprisingly, she was introduced to the show in a very similar way to how Eddie was introduced in the premiere of the second season. The only difference was that Lucy was introduced as a potential love interest to Buck unlike Eddie. And to no surprise to fans of the show Buck and Lucy shared not one but two kisses in her first episode. These two have a weird type of chemistry that felt a bit creepy (that bar scene) but I guess it's easier to force Buck in another romantic situation than deal with his relationship with girlfriend Taylor Kelly that's not working.

The writers have no problem creating a storyline that has Buck cheating on Taylor with Lucy and not to mention in recent interviews teasing that the flirty relationship between Buck and Lucy will continue throughout the remainder of the season. However, they have issues with exploring the "amazing chemistry" as the showrunner has said that Buck and Eddie have with each other because they are only "very good friends". If they are such good friends why copy their first interaction for a Buck and Lucy romantic plot if it wasn't already considered the start of romance for Buck and Eddie. Lucy's Eddie like introduction makes it perfectly clear that if Eddie had been a woman, him and Buck would have been together by the third or fourth season.

I think I would have liked Lucy if the writers had introduced her in a different way. Her initial purpose seems to be the catalyst for Buck and Taylor to break up and that she's some weird hybrid of Buck and Eddie's characters instead of being an interesting character in her own right. Between the queerbaiting and introducing a new character in a terrible way, the writers have managed to ruin so much already. I hope they have a clear idea of where this story in going for Buck because so far all it has done is upset so many viewers by having him cheat on his girlfriend. I think they could have figured out another way for Buck to end things with Taylor without the cheating aspect and Lucy not being a plot device for it. Lucy feels like an unnecessary character that was brought in simply to stir up bad soap opera drama.
