Entertainment News #8: Cancelled Shows, Shelved Movies and a Show Ending

- Netflix cancels the TV series First Kill after one season. I believe one of the reasons why Netflix keeps losing subscribers is due to the company constantly cancelling TV series. Viewers are not going to continue investing their time into series if the company can't be bothered to do the same. And they barely promoted this show before it premiered.

I don't like how now of days, networks and streaming services do the bare minimum when it comes to promoting shows and then expect fans and viewers to watch something they didn't know existed. Or networks and streaming services expect fans to do the promotion for them which is a lazy approach to marketing. It's disappointing this series was cancelled because it actually was rather interesting and I had hoped it would get another season to really delve more into the story.

- In a strange move Warner Bros. has shelved the DC Comics movie Batgirl which would have aired on HBO Max. According to reports, the reason given is that the company is going back to focusing on movies for theatrical release which leaves Batgirl with no options of being released since it was made for TV (or streaming).

Batgirl which was directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah would have showcased Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon/Batgirl. The movie also would have featured J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Jim Gordon, Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman and Brendan Fraser as the villain, Firefly. Batgirl isn't the only movie Warner Bros. is shelving, you can add the animated movie SCOOB!: Holiday Haunt (which is a sequel to the 2020 SCOOB! animated movie) to the list. So far, there is no information on whether either movie will eventually be released on DVD/Blu-ray.

HBO Max also cancelled the newly released TV series Gordita Chronicles after one seasons. According the streaming services' spokesperson "Live-action kids and family programming will not be part of our programming focus in the immediate future, and as a result, we've had to make the very difficult decision to end Gordita Chronicles at HBO Max." It makes no sense to cut children and family programs, why ignore a target audience? Anyway, fans are hoping another network or streaming service will pick up the show.

- In other DC Comics related news, The Flash TV series will be ending after the upcoming ninth season on The CW. The Final season will only have 13 episodes. This show has had a long run but I think it's really time for it to end. It was starting to feel like they were running out of ideas but it was still fun to watch. It will be interesting to see how the final season will go.
