I hope you're having a great start to the week. This morning, I noticed something rather interesting, according to Fandom, Evan "Buck" Buckley and Edmundo "Eddie" Diaz (or Buddie as the ship is called) were the top ship from April 24-28. Although, this isn't the first time this ship has been #1, it's usually somewhere on the list of 20 (at least in one of the top 10 spots) but it just really struck me how popular this ship really is. I find it fascinating because out of all the ships out there, 9-1-1 has one of the most popular ships that usually appears on a lot of various fandom site lists.
You would think the writers would want to capitalize on it? For instance the writers for The Rookie recently made the very popular non-canon ship of Lucy Chen and Tim Bradford (or Chenford as it's also called) canon. It has been mentioned that the writers had not set out to make Chenford canon but they noticed the continuous and growing fan support for the all chemistry between the characters and it eventually became official.
Again, why wouldn't the 9-1-1 Showrunner and writers want to capitalize on it? Despite how good and amazing the official ships (Athena Grant and Robert "Bobby" Nash, Maddie Buckley and Howard "Chimney" Han and Henrietta "Hen" and Dr. Karen Wilson) are, they rarely if ever make it on any of these fandom lists.
If you have a big fan base for certain characters and those characters are currently the top ship from your show, why would you continue to waste it? Especially by constantly putting those characters in relationships with random and meaningless characters instead of something very meaningful together?
