Happy 40th Anniversary, Superman: The Movie!

Wow, I can't believe it's the 40th anniversary of Superman: The Movie. I often wonder with envy what it was like for those fans to have seen this movie when it was first released in theatres on December 15, 1978. Were any of them cynical thinking this was going to be crap or were they so hyped up they couldn't wait to see it?

I like to think it was the latter since this was the first time Superman appeared on the big screen in a full length film. Of course that wasn't Superman's first time appearing on theatre screens, there were the serials which starred Kirk Alyn as Superman and Noel Neil as Lois Lane. However, Superman: The Movie was something else all altogether.

I may not have seen Superman: The Movie when it was first released but I do remember the first time I saw it. I'm not sure if it was my mother or father who turned to the movie when it was airing on TV but I do remember sitting through the entire movie not moving except during commercial breaks. I'm pretty sure I was mesmerized by every scene from Krypton's explosion to Clark Kent getting hired at The Daily Planet to Superman turning back time to save Lois Lane. I'm still in awe of Christopher Reeve's performance as Clark Kent and Superman because he really had a way of transforming himself into two distinct characters. I believe that when Clark was unable to help his father Jonathan Kent when he died, it instilled in him the desire to do everything he could to help others. Which is why he also did the unthinkable in reversing time in order to save Lois who he had completely fallen in love with.

I thought Margot Kidder was perfectly cast as Lois Lane and she brought out the character's strength, humor, flirtation and tenacity in every scene. I loved the contrasting scenes between Lois and Superman and Lois and Clark, with the first there is this undeniable chemistry that features some swoon worthy scenes. While the scenes between Lois and Clark can't be overlooked because they feature some of the most humorous moments.

Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor truly made me despise him, no doubt he was a genius but that was overshadowed by his villainous tendencies. Luthor practically exudes underhandedness and he was willing to kill people to set up his real estate scheme. This movie features an abundance of great characters including Jimmy Olsen, Perry White, Otis, Miss Teschmacher and so many more.

To this day, Superman: The Movie is still one of my favorite movies as well as being a cinematic masterpiece. It perfectly told the origin story of Superman, with the movie combining drama and suspense, humor and romance while featuring amazing special effects for that era. And not to mention the theme song by John Williams that has become just as iconic as the film itself.

In Remembrance: Margot Kidder

It's so sad to hear that actress Margot Kidder has died peacefully in her sleep at the age of 69, it's being reported that her death happened on Sunday (5/13). Her role as Lois Lane in the Superman movies is still my utmost favorite version of the character. She brought so much emotion and strength to Lois who was intelligent, fearless, independent, flirtatious and unbelievably feisty. 

Aside from her guest role on Smallville, I haven't seen many of her other movies but when I get the chance I'm going to order a few such as The Amityville Horror and Black Christmas.

For now, Rest in Peace Margot Kidder, you will never be forgotten.

Lois Lane Friday: Book News and My Favorite Live-Action Version

There just isn't enough of Lois Lane in the world so I thought why not have Lois Lane Friday. A column where I can post interesting things about Lois Lane from the funny to the thought provoking.

First, for the book news, there will be a sequel to the popular Lois Lane: Fallout by Gwenda Bond. The next book which according to the author's website is currently in the editing process and will be titled Lois Lane: Double Down. It's scheduled to be released Spring 2016. Now that's something to look forward to especially with the way DC Comics is currently dragging the character threw the mud.

Now for the second part of my post, I wanted to focus on my favorite live-action versions of the character which were played by: Phyllis Coates, Noel Neill, Margot Kidder, Teri Hatcher and Erica Durance. They each brought something different to the role and seemed to make it their own.

I didn't include either Lois from Superman Returns (Kate Bosworth) and Man of Steel (Amy Adams) because they were Lois in name only. They were empty shells and rather forgettable.

There's more to Lois than being a great reporter and being feisty, she's smart, highly opinionated, courageous and willing to take risk and she's always looking out for others. She's loyal, driven, hardworking, passionate not only about her career but also her love life (i.e. Clark Kent) and most importantly she's not afraid to be herself.

Although, Lois has undergone many changes over her long history, however the key things never really change.

30 Day Geek Chic Challenge, Day #20: Superman Sweater

Day #20: Superman Sweater

I absolutely love this Superman sweater that Margot Kidder was shown wearing for promotional photos but I found it's hard to find this level of quality where the super symbol is actually a part of the sweater.

Unless I learn how to knit or can find someone who can, I have to settle for something close enough to it.

No real challenge for the day, I just really want to find a good quality Superman sweater.

Throwback Thursday: Lois and Superman from Superman: The Movie

The first Superman movie continues to be one of my favorite film adaptations of Superman. It was just a wonderful movie and I thought Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder were perfect as Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane.
