Book of Interest: Naomi and Ely's No Kiss List

I recently watched the movie Naomi and Ely's No Kiss List on Netflix and I absolutely adored it. I love a good friendship/romantic dramedy. Naomi and Ely's were pretty much inseparable but could their friendship withstand romance drama. Specifically since they put into place a fail safe (a No Kiss List) to prevent that but things don't always go as planned. It's such a cute movie.

I found out later that the movie was based on a book and now I want to read it. I will be adding this to my wishlist as soon as possible.

Book: Naomi and Ely's No Kiss List by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan

Description:

Naomi and Ely are best friends. Inseparable since childhood. Naomi is straight. Ely is gay. Naomi dates guys who she claims to like. They’re okay, but she likes Ely more.

To protect their feelings, Naomi and Ely created a No Kiss List—a list of people neither of them is allowed to kiss under any circumstances. Naomi’s latest boyfriend Bruce isn’t on that list. But he probably should have been. Because when Ely kisses Bruce, it breaks Naomi’s heart. The result? A rift of universal proportions. Can these best friends come together again, or will this be end of Naomi and Ely: the Institution?

Book Review: Abigail and the Snowman

Book: Abigail and the Snowman (issues #1-4) written, illustrated and lettered by Roger Langridge with color by Fred Stresing

Edition: Single Print Issues

Description:

An imaginative young girl makes a new best friend—an invisible yeti!

Abigail is a nine-year-old with a huge imagination but when she and her dad move to a small town, that imagination only makes it harder to fit in at her new school. All that changes when she meets a loveable and sophisticated yeti named Claude who has escaped a top secret government facility. Abigail and Claude quickly become best friends, even if no one believes that he’s real. The fun can’t last and it’s not long before the mysterious Shadow Men chasing Claude are hot on his trail. To keep him safe from his former captors, Abigail and Claude embark on a great adventure to find his real home, but it might not be exactly where they expected. Eisner and Harvey Award-winning cartoonist Roger Langridge takes readers on a heartwarming journey of loyalty and friendship.

Rating: 5 stars

Review:

I bought the first issue of this miniseries on New Year's Eve of 2014 and the last issue on March 25, 2015. I'm mentioning this because I totally forgot I had this miniseries that is until I recently reorganized my books. This is why I'm trying to get out of the habit of waiting to read miniseries until I have all of the issues. It makes it far too easy to forget about them.

This charming miniseries is a delight to read as the story makes good use of action, adventure and humor as it follows an unusual friendship between a little girl and a yeti. The story opens with a couple of Men in Black looking for escaped specimen 486. From there the story follows nine years old Abigail and her father who recently moved to a new town, Shipton-on-Sea. They moved there because her father got a new job. But things don't seem to be going so well for Abigail and her father. First, she doesn't fit in among her new classmates and part of that has to do her having a very active imagination. Second, her dad was unexpectedly fired from his job due to an accident.

Her father now in the process of looking for a new job was also hoping to take on some part-time electrician work. As a way to both spend time with Abigail and fill out job applications, the two go to a local park. Not having any luck playing with the other kids, Abigail starts playing with her imaginary dog Claude which leads her to a truly unexpected discovery.

Abigail met a yeti (whose designated name is specimen 486) who was perhaps way too big to be hiding behind a tree. He was very surprised that she could see him since he was supposed to be invisible. According to him, he has the ability to turn invisible by clouding people's minds. But apparently it doesn't work on children.

The two quickly started hanging out and specimen 486 got a new name, he's now called Claude (which he thought was better than his old name). Her dad already knows about her imaginary dog named Claude, so it will make it easier to talk to Claude the yeti without her dad getting suspicious.

Abigail and Claude's fun didn't last too long because the Men in Black were approaching the park leaving Abigail, Claude and her very confused father to make a quick get away back home. Unfortunately the MIB overheard some information that may make it easier to find Claude.

Finding Claude is one thing, capturing him is another. The two MIBs had a difficult time trying to do just that when they showed up to Abigail's school trying to recapture specimen 486. Their plan backfired leaving them on an unexpected trip. But that wasn't the end of Abigail and Claude's troubles, the government sent for a new more dangerous agent to bring in the yeti.

This is a fast paced interesting story from the first issue all the way to the last and it becomes more exciting as it goes on with Abigail and Claude having to stay ahead of the agents. I love the cuteness and creativity of this story as it captures the sometimes odd yet tender and wonderful friendship between Abigail and Claude. Plus, there is plenty of humor and action and fun and vivid illustrations to keep the reader's attention.

365 Days of Books of Interest: Day #273 (for Saturday): Evie Brooks in Central Park Showdown

I've gotten a little behind on this Books of Interest challenge and I'm trying to catch up. I loved reading the first book Evie Brooks is Marooned in Manhattan and would like to read this next book in the series. Especially since there was an interesting cliffhanger at the end and I want to know what's next for Evie which is what this book appears to focus on.

Book: Evie Brooks in Central Park Showdown (Evie Brooks book #2) by Sheila Agnew

Source: Borrowed from Publisher/NetGalley for an honest review

Publication: Available now

Description:

Evie Brooks is having the time of her life in New York, despite having to start her first day of school with a stye on her eye and a skirt so short it shows off her baby giraffe legs. And life with her Uncle Scott continues to be a whirlwind as he adds the Central Park Zoo to his list of vet clients.

Once again the practice is inundated with the city's strangest pets and inmates, including an alpaca named Milly, Eddie the Westipoo, Jax the snail, and a rabbit named Dr. Pepper that goes walkabout in Central Park. Evie is almost too busy to notice that the father she's never met has darkened her door and is anxious to make amends and seek custody of Evie. Well, Evie won't have any part of that. Nobody is going to separate her from Uncle Scott, not even the courts and a lawyer named Marcy, who claims to be representing her interests but won't let her speak. That is not Evie's style, however, and she is determined to find a way to stay with her uncle, with a little help from her friends.

Currently Reading: The Kite Runner and That's Not Hay in My Hair

It's been a while since I posted a Currently Reading post because lately I usually pick up a book, read it, then write up the review. But I want to start posting what I read again. Here are two books that I recently started reading: The Kite Runner and That's Not Hay in My Hair. I should be finished with the second book in a couple of days.

Book: The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

Description:

The unforgettable, heartbreaking story of the unlikely friendship between a wealthy boy and the son of his father's servant, The Kite Runner is a beautifully crafted novel set in a country that is in the process of being destroyed. It is about the power of reading, the price of betrayal, and the possibility of redemption; and an exploration of the power of fathers over sons—their love, their sacrifices, their lies.

A sweeping story of family, love, and friendship told against the devastating backdrop of the history of Afghanistan over the last thirty years, The Kite Runner is an unusual and powerful novel that has become a beloved, one-of-a-kind classic.

Book: That's Not Hay in My Hair by Juliette Turner

Source: Borrowed from Publisher/NetGalley for an honest review

Publication: Available now

Description:

New York City life had crammed sidewalks, gasoline-filled puddles, and angry taxi drivers, but Juliette enjoyed the towering sky-scrapers, the half-block walk to school, and the restaurant smells wafting into her bedroom. She had never cared for a horse, let alone a long-horn, when her mother announced their imminent move to a 300 acre ranch in Texas, where they would be caring for three horses, five dogs, twenty-five longhorns, and a cat … all by themselves.

Juliette couldn’t help feeling excited, even though she’d have to climb a hill to get a bar of cell-phone service. Soon she was running from bats and snakes, rescuing a calf from a twenty-foot ditch, medicating ponies, and having adventures so crazy it’s hard to believe they’re for real—but it all happened exactly how it’s written.

Get ready for side-splitting laughs, heart-wrenching tears, and surprising life lessons learned down on the farm and shared by fourteen-year-old Juliette Turner.

I love the cover and this little series, these kids are forever finding a mystery and animals they want to help. The Secret of the Shadow Bandit is the fourth book in the series and it's already on my wishlist. The description seems interesting and perhaps a little spooky. I can't wait to read this.

365 Days of Books of Interest: Day #188: Like Magic

I can understand the title, friendship does sort of feel like magic. It definitely seems exactly like that when you have really good friends. Like Magic is a middle grade story where friendship is a key component of the story. I think this would be a cute book to read and I also think the cover is really cute.

Book: Like Magic by Elaine Vickers with illustrations by Sara Not

Publication: October 18, 2016

Description:

This sweet middle grade novel featuring a diverse cast of characters proves that friendship can be just around the corner.

For three ten-year-old girls, their once simple worlds are starting to feel too big. Painfully shy Grace dreads starting fifth grade now that her best friend has moved away. Jada hopes she’ll stop feeling so alone if she finds her mother, who left years ago. And Malia fears the arrival of her new baby sister will forever change the family she loves. When the girls each find a mysterious treasure box in their library and begin to fill the box with their own precious things, they start to feel less alone. But it’s up to Grace, Jada, and Malia to take the treasures and turn them into something more: true friendship.

365 Days of Books of Interest: Day #163: Pi in the Sky

This seems like an interesting story with Joss as a least likely hero working with Earthling Annika trying to find the Earth after it disappeared. It's a unique premise, hopefully this is a good read.

Book: Pi in the Sky by Wendy Mass

Description:

Joss is the seventh son of the Supreme Overlord of the Universe. His older brothers help his dad rule the cosmos, but all Joss gets to do is deliver pies. That's right: pies. Of course, these pies actually hold the secrets of the universe between their buttery crusts, but they're still pies.

Joss is happy to let his older brothers shine. He has plenty to keep his hands full: attempting to improve his bowling score; listening to his best friend, Kal, try (and fail) to play the drums; and exploring his ever-changing home, The Realms. But when Earth suddenly disappears, Joss is tasked with the seemingly impossible job of bringing it back. With the help of Annika, an outspoken girl from Earth, he embarks on the adventure of a lifetime...and learns that the universe is an even stranger place than he'd imagined.

365 Days of Books of Interest: Day #152: Zoe in Wonderland

How could that cover not catch my eye? I love all the nature shown from the trees to the birds to the flowers. It looks like the perfect reading spot.

Aside from the cover, I think the description seems very cute and delightful with Zoe using her imagination to make her life more exciting. What kid hasn't done that? I'm very interested in reading this.

Book: Zoe in Wonderland by Brenda Woods

Publication: August 16, 2016

Description:

Coretta Scott King Honor winner Brenda Woods introduces introverted, daydream-prone Zoe, who’s afraid her real life will never be as exciting as her imaginary one.

Zoe Reindeer considers herself “just Zoe”—never measuring up to her too-perfect older sister or her smarty-pants little brother. Truthfully, though, she’d rather just blend in with the plants at the family business, Doc Reindeer’s Exotic Plant Wonderland. She does have one friend, Q, and he’s the best one ever—but he’s moving away, leaving Zoe to fend for herself, and she doesn’t know what she’ll do without him. That is until a tall astronomer from Madagascar comes to the nursery looking for a Baobab tree. His visit starts a ball rolling that makes Zoe long for real adventures, not just imaginary ones—and shows her that perhaps her first real adventure is finally beginning.

365 Days of Books of Interest: Day #125: The One and Only Ivan

How cute is this cover? I love to see pictures of animal friendships especially when it's unlikely. This book is based on the real life Ivan the Gorilla. This seem like it might be a cute little book for both children and adults.

Book: The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate with illustrations by Patricia Castelao

Description:

Winner of the 2013 Newbery Medal and a #1 New York Times bestseller, this stirring and unforgettable novel from renowned author Katherine Applegate celebrates the transformative power of unexpected friendship. Inspired by the true story of a captive gorilla known as Ivan, this illustrated novel is told from the point of view of Ivan himself.

Having spent twenty-seven years behind the glass walls of his enclosure in a shopping mall, Ivan has grown accustomed to humans watching him. He hardly ever thinks about his life in the jungle. Instead, Ivan occupies himself with television, his friends Stella and Bob, and painting. But when he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from the wild, he is forced to see their home, and his art, through new eyes.

In the tradition of timeless stories like Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little, Katherine Applegate blends humor and poignancy to create an unforgettable story of friendship, art, and hope. This paperback edition includes an author's note highlighting the differences between the fictional story and true events, a version of the author's Newbery Medal acceptance speech, Ivan's "signature," discussion questions, and more.

Book Watch: The Girl's Book Series

I'm currently reading an advanced reader copy of the third book Smart Girl but I'm going to stop reading it. Not because it's bad, no I'm actually really enjoying it but my reason is simply because I want to read the first two and 1/2 books before I finish reading this one.

The Girl's book series is on my Book Watch list because I love a series that is fashionable and fun with interesting characters.

Book: Party Girl (The Girl's book #1) by Rachel Hollis

Description:

Landon Brinkley’s dreams are all coming true. She’s landed an internship with the fabulous Selah Smith, event planner for the Hollywood elite, taking her from small-town Texas to the bright lights of LA. Landon soon finds herself in a world in which spending a million dollars on an event—even a child’s birthday party—is de rigueur and the whims of celebrity clients are life-and-death matters. At first, the thrill of working on A-list parties and celebrity weddings is enough to get Landon through the seventy-five-hour workweeks and endless abuse at the hands of her mercurial boss. But when the reality of the business reveals itself, she’s forced to make a choice: do whatever it takes to get ahead, or stay true to herself.

Book: Party Girl's First Date (The Girl's book #1.5) by Rachel Hollis

Description:

The Girl's Series Novella - Landon Brinkley is twenty-four years old and she’s never been on a real date. That’s mostly because she’s been working so hard on her dreams she hasn’t had time to bother with men. But then Brody Ashton walked into her life and since he looks like an underwear model (but you know, with clothes on) it was kind of impossible not to take notice.

So Landon and Brody are dating now, or really, beginning to. It’s all very new and exciting and there’s only one problem… they still haven’t gone on a real date. So that’s what tonight is supposed to be; magical, romantic, expensive… and it's about to go horribly wrong.

Book: Sweet Girl (The Girl's book #2) by Rachel Hollis

Description:

Max Jennings is in a bad mood. It’s not anything you did; it’s just that secrets from her past make it her natural state of being. But she’s not going to talk about it or share her feelings, so don’t bother asking.

Max’s bad mood means that very few people actually truly understand her or know that her secret dream is to be a pastry chef. When a rare opportunity to work for world-famous Avis Phillips presents itself, Max jumps at the chance. Avis and her staff aren’t stingy with the tough love, so Max spends every spare minute practicing her craft. As she bakes brownies and custards, cookies and galettes, she builds an unlikely friendship with a man she once loathed and finds herself falling into something she’s spent the last six years avoiding. Will she let her painful past stand in the way, or will she muster the strength to forgive herself and realize her full potential?

Book: Smart Girl (The Girl's Series book #3) by Rachel Hollis

Description:

Brilliant designer Miko Jin is a hopeless romantic. She’s spent most of her life falling in love over and over again…with the men she finds in the pages of her favorite novels.

With novels as her guide, and her best friends by her side, she knows she can get Liam to love her back. But just like any good romance novel, fate has a few plot twists in store. Will Miko get her own happy ending? Will she find the strength to stand up for what she deserves even if it means breaking her own heart?

365 Days of Books of Interest: Day #73: Kelsey the Spy (The Curious Cat Spy Club)

I love this series and for two reasons: 1) interesting mysteries and 2) well-written characters. I like a series that keeps me entertained with vivacious characters and full on adventures that also provides clues so that I can try to solving the mystery.

I enjoyed reading the first two books The Curious Cat Spy Club and The Mystery of the Zorse's Mask and look forward to reading this one.

Book: Kelsey the Spy (The Curious Cat Spy Club book #3) by Linda Joy Singleton

Publication: April 1, 2016

Description:

365 Days of Books of Interest: Day #51: The Bollywood Bride

As a romantic, I found that I surprisingly don't read a lot of romance books. I think it's mainly because I'm so used to reading other genres that when I do read a romance book I don't find them to be very challenging.

But lately, I've been finding some that have been interesting to read. When I read over the description for Bollywood Bride it definitely caught my attention, Fame and Romance.

I will be adding this to my wishlist.

Book: The Bollywood Bride by Sonali Dev

Description:

Ria Parkar is Bollywood's favorite Ice Princess--beautiful, poised, and scandal-proof--until one impulsive act threatens to expose her destructive past. But it also means confronting Vikram Jathar.

And now, among those who know her best, Ria may find the courage to face the secrets she's been guarding for everyone else's benefit--and a chance to stop acting and start living.

Rich with details of modern Indian-American life, here is a warm, sexy, and witty story of love, family, and the difficult choices that arise in the name of both.

Book Review: Sabrina: The Teen-Age Witch issue #27

Book: Sabrina: The Teen-Age Witch issue #27

Edition: Single Print Edition

Rating: 5 stars

Review:

This is another issue I found in the discount bin at the comic book store. The cover may not be in the best condition but it was still a good read. This was published in 1975 and the funny thing is, I couldn't find any credit for the writers and artists for any of the stories. Perhaps they didn't start listing them until later on. In this issue, there were four Sabrina stories and one Li'l Jinx short story.

Story #1: "Salem Sing Along"

In this story, Sabrina's Aunt Hilda was not enjoying the song that Sabrina was singing. She felt the song was too modern and too kind and caring, certainly not something that a witch should be singing. Plus, Hilda preferred the old songs. Feeling defeated, Sabrina went up to the attic to think and wound up finding some of Hilda's old music books. After she found a song that she really liked, Sabrina went to go play it for her aunt. However, she had no idea that playing the song would cause so much trouble.

When she played the song, it was like she conjured a spell because it was a total magical disaster causing all types of problems around the house. But that turned out to be a good thing for Sabrina because Aunt Hilda no longer had a problem with the song Sabrina used to sing.

Story #2: "Not Wanted!" (Li'l Jinx)

In this short story, Li'l Jinx had a cold and couldn't go out to play with her friend Gi Gi.

Story #3: "Cold Wave"

On a very hot and sunny day, Harvey came over for a visit and couldn't help commenting on how cool it was in Sabrina's house. He had no idea it was magic keeping the house cool and in a rare display of kindness Aunt Hilda placed a spell on Harvey to keep him cool once he left the house.

It wasn't until Sabrina's Uncle Ambrose pointed out a problem in the kitchen that everyone realized that Hilda's magic was malfunctioning. They had to call in the Zelda, the Head Witch to fix all of Hilda's spells. It's a good thing Sabrina remembered the spell casted on Harvey before it was too late.

Story #4: "A Spell in the Sun"

Sabrina, Hilda and Ambrose take in a day at the beach but Hilda was not enjoying herself. From a rambunctious little boy who kept tossing sand in her face to a rude teenager, Hilda used a little magic to make the day better but her attempt to enjoy a meal on the beach may have created some unexplainable trouble for the family.

Story #5: "Pocus Hocus"

This last story has Sabrina assisting Harvey in a magic show. Seeing how horrible he was doing with his act, Sabrina cast a few spells to help him out. Thanks to Sabrina's help the audience thought Harvey was only pretending to be a bad magician. Too bad Harvey wasn't in on it because despite all the cheers from the audience he ended up being confused with how the show turned out.

Having magical powers doesn't make life easy, it seems to cause nothing but trouble for Sabrina and her family. Even when they try to help, it turns out wrong. I love reading these old comics, they're so much fun. The stories were written as light and humorous with the artwork showing all the zaniness that occurs.
