On My List: July 11th

Happy Thursday!

I just wanted to check in and see how everyone is doing? I thought I would post a mini On My List.

Reading:

I forgot to post that I finished my 30 Day Reading Challenge on Saturday (July 6th). During those 30 days I not only read From Twinkle, With Love by Sandhya Menon but also five reference books (that I need to have read). I finished one of the reference books and I'm nearly finished with From Twinkle, With Love (I'll have the review up soon).

One of the reasons, why I wanted to do the challenge was to help with my reading. It had become so bad and I was constantly getting reader's block. I think the challenge helped because I was reading daily. I'm trying to continue that but I'm okay taking a break for a day or two as long as I continue with my almost daily reading. My reading is still not like it used to be but it's better than it was. And I at least like where it's currently at.

Aside from my daily reading, I did buy two new Young Adult books: Excuse Me While I Ugly Cry by Joya Goffney and A Novel Idea by Aimee Friedman. I'll post those at another time.

Watching:

TV

For some of my regular Book Girl readers, this might be a surprise...I finally started watching Bones. I know can you believe it. I've had the complete series sitting on my shelf so long that I don't even remember when I bought it. And for so long, I kept saying I was going to watch Bones but I had never seemed to get around to watching it. That is until now. I'm on the first season and so far, I've watched the first eight episodes. Forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan and F.B.I. Special Agent Seeley Booth are an interesting duo and so are the cases they investigate. Along with Dr. "Bones" Brennan, I think the other scientists are just so quirky and weird and smart but I like them all. I can't wait to continue watching this series, I'm really enjoying it. I'm not mad, I didn't start watching it earlier but I am happy I'm watching it now.

Another show that I've been watching is the classic 1980's series Cagney & Lacey. I'm on the second season and I've been really enjoying this show. It follows NYC Police Detectives Mary Beth Lacey and Christine "Chris" Cagney as they investigate various cases and deal with their personal lives. What I found interesting about this show is that the first season had actress Meg Foster playing Cagney. The role was recast with actress Sharon Gless for the second season. Both actresses portrayed the character as sort of tough, rough around the edges and tomboyish, so at least that was kept that the same despite the change.

Well, I just wanted to post a mini On My List to let you know what I've been reading and watching. What are you reading and watching?

30 Day Reading Challenge

I've been seeing various daily reading challenges popping up online recently (yearly, monthly, weekly, etc.) and I thought why not attempt one of these challenges. I have to admit my reading has gotten worse. I'm not sure what the cause of my recurring reader's block is but I don't want it. I want to read my books like I used to. I have so many books that I want to read and this reader's block is truly making it a challenge (no pun intended). So, I'm hoping this daily reading challenge will help get my reading at least on the road to where it used to be.

I decided to go with a 30 day challenge which I'm going to start tomorrow. So, my 30 Day Reading Challenge will go from June 6th to July 6th. Starting tomorrow will give me time to set up my challenge. I'm not sure if I want a set reading time or number of pages, reading in the morning or evening, etc. But I'll figure it out. I'm also going to keep track of my daily reading. I'll write down my progress and at the end of the month see how everything went.

I'm really looking forward to starting this tomorrow. Happy Reading Everyone!

Matilda Reading Challenge (Second Attempt)

How was everyone's weekend? I hope you had a good one. I realized, over the weekend, that I'm not reading as much as I want or used to. So, I'm going to try the Matilda Reading Challenge again. Last year I tried it. But I'll admit, it didn't work out the first time because I was going through a reader's block. Since that's no longer a problem, I'm going to try the reading challenge again. And this time I plan to stick to it.

The challenge consist of reading for two hours a day for five days a week. And since I really want to read more books like I used to, the Matilda Reading Challenge is just what I need as motivation. I also need to clean and organize my reading nook which has gotten a little messy, which is why I haven't been using it lately.

I will be starting the Matilda Reading Challenge tomorrow since I will be cleaning up my reading nook today. I figured with my reading nook clean and organized, I'll give me that additional motivation to read more.

Matilda Reading Challenge

A couple of years ago, there was this Matilda Challenge that was really popular. Unfortunately, the challenge had nothing to do with reading, it had fans pretending to have powers like Matilda. I was disappointed because when I heard of the challenge, I immediately thought it had something to do with Matilda's love of reading. Which is why I want to start a Matilda Reading Challenge.

In the book Matilda by Roald Dahl, Matilda Wormwood would go to the library and read for two glorious hours for five days a week while her mother was off playing bingo. This was before Matilda got a library card but once she did, she would read at home most likely during that same amount of time. She even created a little reading nook in her small bedroom.

Matilda's love of reading and actually making time for it is what inspired me to create this challenge because lately I've been unable to focus on reading like I used to. For instance, I read a little over a hundred pages of Spirit Hunters by Ellen Oh back in November and then I ended up taking another reading break. I haven't gone back to reading despite how good the book is. I've taken more reading breaks than I used to and I've noticed that a lot of other readers have been feeling a little distracted and unmotivated as well which is why I wanted to do this Matilda Reading Challenge as a way to get myself back to reading.

Something my mom told me is that "if it's something you really want to do, you will make the time for it". And she's right because I love reading and I really want to get back to enjoying a good book. Which is why I'm challenging myself to read for two hours a day for 21 days. I will be starting tomorrow Dec. 8th and will go until the 28th. If anyone else is interested in joining the Matilda Reading Challenge, please do. You don't have to read for two hours feel free to choose whatever amount of time that works for you.

Update for Reading Before Bed Challenge

Happy Sunday Bookworms!

I was checking to see how you guys were doing with the Reading Before Bed challenge?

So far, I've been doing really well with this challenge with fourteen days and counting. Although I set my personal goal for 30 days, I'm thinking of continuing it but I'll see how I feel after I reach my goal.

I love this challenge because it give you a chance to wind down and relax at the end of the day before going to bed. I like to make it as relaxing as possible and layer up on the sofa with a warm blanket while drinking a warm cup of tea. I take my time reading and simply enjoying these few minutes of relaxation. It's like the day's stress and anxiety just melts away while I read through a few pages of my book.

Since I don't have kids, I know it's probably easier for me to find time to read before bed. I was wondering for those who do have children, do you read before bed before or after you've read to your kids?

This is a fun and easygoing challenge and I want to send out good luck to anyone who's continuing with it.

Reading Challenge: Reading Before Bed

Hello Book Nerds! I'm hoping today will be a good reading day, I’m currently reading Brownies and Broomsticks by Bailey Cates for The Book Girl's Book Club. I was wondering what are you reading?

If you're not reading anything at the moment but plan to soon, there is a new reading challenge that you may be interested in. It's the Reading Before Bed challenge. It's pretty self-explanatory with the goal being to read before you go to bed. Since this challenge doesn't require a certain amount of time or number of pages to read, you could read as little as five pages or for five minutes, the main point is that you spend some time reading and relaxing before you go to sleep.

I'm going to start this challenge tonight and my personal goal is to read every night for 30 days. One thing I want to mention is don't try to force yourself to stay awake to read or to continue reading if you're tired. Go to sleep because you don't want to wake up feeling exhausted and drained.
