Top Ten Tuesday - Top Ten 2014 Releases I'm Dying to Read

Top Ten Tuesday hosted by The Broke and The Bookish

At the moment these are the only books, I can't wait to read. To be honest, aside from these four books, I'm not sure what's going to be released next year. I'm sure as the new year approaches, I'll find other new books that will spark my interest. But for now, these are the books I can't wait to read.

1. Black Canary and Zatanna: Bloodspell by Paul Dini with illustrations by Joe Quinones

Publication: May 27, 2014

I can't wait to read this for two reason: 1) it has absolutely nothing what so ever to do with the new 52 and 2) it features two of my favorite characters in an interesting story.

Top Ten Tuesday - Top Ten Book Turn-Offs

Top Ten Tuesday list hosted by The Broke and The Bookish

Happy 1st day of October and Happy Tuesday!

I love trying to put together these list. They're interesting to think about. This Tuesday's list is about the ten things that turn you off while reading a book. I'm not a book snob at all and so a book has to truly work really hard to make me dislike what I'm reading.

For more things that might put me off a book please read my TTT for Words/Topics That Will Make Me NOT Pick Up a Book

So here are my 10 book turn-offs:

1. When the story loses focus and starts going in a completely different route or turns into nothing more than gratuitous sex and violence with no plot.

2. When the writing is so awful that I'm about to stop reading it.

3. Something that annoys me is when a female character is written as a ditzy, damsel-in-distress but is constantly described as being a smart and strong competent person.

4. When characters that are in their late twenties and early thirties are acting like teenagers instead of their age.

5. Domineering, pushy characters especially if they are the love interest.

6. When a book is so overly explanatory or descriptive that I feel like I'm reading a text book.

7. When a book starts out good then turns into a slow moving boring story.

8. When I feel no connection to the story or characters as the story moves along.

9. Useless characters that add nothing to the story or are only used as plot devices.

10. When a book has way too many clichés. It's as if the author couldn't come up with anything original.

Top Ten Tuesday - Top Ten Best Sequels Ever

Today's The Broke and The Bookish list had me really thinking it over. Because there are so many really good sequels I've read and a few that stood out to me as being some the best ever are:

(These are in no particular order)

1. The Da Vinci Code (Robert Langdon book #2) by Dan Brown:

This was just the best, it's full of drama and suspense with tons of twist and turns. This was just an engaging book.

2. Passion, Betrayal and Killer Highlights (A Sophie Katz Murder Mystery book #2) by Kyra Davis:

This had to be one of the funniest mystery books I've read and I just loved all the characters and the mystery.

3. The Lost World (Jurassic Park book #2) by Michael Crichton:

What's not to love? This one had even more dinosaurs with an even bigger adventure.

4. Harry Potter books #2-7 by J.K. Rowling:

Each story just kept getting better and better, it was hard to choose which one as the best sequel ever. So I included them all.

Books:

#2 Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
#3 Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
#4 Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
#5 Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
#6 Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
#7 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

5. The Lord of the Rings books #2 and 3 by J.R.R. Tolkien:

These two sequels were exciting to the very end.

Books:

#2 The Two Towers
#3 The Return of the King

6. Shopaholic books #2-6 by Sophie Kinsella:

I absolutely love each sequel they're so funny. Becky goes from one zany thing to the next.

Books:

#2 Shopaholic Takes Manhattan
#3 Shopaholic Ties the Knot
#4 Shopaholic & Sister
#5 Shopaholic & Baby
#6 Mini Shopaholic

7. Percy Jackson and the Olympians books #2-5 by Rick Riordan:

I just can't include just one of these sequels as the best because they all are.

Books:

#2 The Sea of Monsters
#3 The Titan's Curse
#4 The Battle of the Labyrinth
#5 The Last Olympian

8. Kane Chronicles books #2 and 3 by Rick Riordan:

The action and adventure never dies down for Carter and Sadie Kane in both of these sequels.

Books:

#2 The Throne of Fire
#3 The Serpent's Shadow

Top Ten Tuesday - Top Ten Books On My Fall 2013 TBR List

Happy Tuesday!

I usually don't make plans or lists for books that I want to buy or read. But I thought it would be fun to make this list, which is a combination of new books I want to buy for the fall and books that I already own and would like to read for the season.

I forgot to add that the list is from The Broke and the Bookish.

New books I would like to buy (maybe borrow) for Fall:

1. Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Search part 3 by Gene Luen Yang, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko

2. The Cuckoo's Calling (Cormoran Strike book #1) by Robert Galbraith (J.K. Rowling): I'm on the waiting list at the library for this however, I just might end up buying it so I can read it sooner. Hopefully, I'll find it at a good price.

3. Doctor Sleep (The Shining book #2) by Stephen King

4. The House of Hades (The Heroes of Olympus book #4) by Rick Riordan

5. Lois Lane: A Celebration of 75 years by various authors

6. Superman: A Celebration of 75 years by various authors

7. Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

Books I would like to read during the Fall:

8. Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Promise part 1 by Gene Luen Yang, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko

9. The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas: I don't have the copy shown.

10. Wings by Aprilynne Pike

Bonus:

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling: I would like to reread the entire series. It's been a while since I've read them.

Top Ten Tuesday - Words/Topics That Will Make Me NOT Pick Up a Book

The Broke and the Bookish host the Top Ten Tuesday and the question for this week is: What are the top ten word/topics that would make you not pick up a book?

I'm not sure I can come up with ten reasons because I'll practically read anything if it interest me. So here's my list:

1. Over Hyped Books: I don't buy books because they're popular I only buy them if it's something I want to read. I might one day get around to reading the Twilight or The Hunger Games series but for now they don't seem to interest me.

2. Copycat Books: After something is proven as a success or becomes popular then numerous copycat books hit the shelves. Why can't they attempt a little originality?

3. Authors who are Horrible to Readers or Pushing Propaganda: I personally don't care what an author does unless they are being a jerk to fans or reviewers or pushing some sort of agenda (such as Orson Scott Card).

4. Nothing but Sex: Sorry but there has to be some sort of story going on other than just sex (Fifty Shades of Grey).

5. Animal or Child Cruelty: The whole book should not be about someone torturing animals or children with nothing happening to them in the end, especially if it's fictional.

6. Cheating/Adultery: There are some exceptions to the rule like Anna Karenina (which is a very well written book) but other than that, glorifying cheating isn't interesting to me.

And:

Poorly Written Books: Unfortunately the only way I can discover this, is by reading the book.

Book Girl Thoughts: Book Intimidation

The Broke and the Bookish have a Top Ten Tuesday post where they asked different book related questions and this Tuesday it's about book intimidation.

The funny thing is I've never been intimidated about any book. My mom said I must not have that gene because if there is a book I want to read nothing will put me off from reading it. I have no book fears. I guess my love of reading is just too strong to be deterred :)

Is there anything that might stop you from reading a book?
