Book Club Picks for February: Ghana Must Go, Betty & Veronica: Shopping Spree! and Star Wars: Rebel Heist

Here at Book Girl, I love to celebrate books. It doesn't matter if it's the newest release or an old classic, I just love books. For February's book club picks, I wanted something different from last month. As a reminder, if there's a book you think we should read for book club, let me know.

For The Book Girl's Book Club I picked Ghana Must Go by Taiye Selasi, I thought it would be a good read. It seemed interesting and although it was published in 2013, I don't recall ever hearing about it which was one of the reasons why I selected it. I think it's good to read as many books and from different authors as possible.

For the Comic Book Club, I thought we could read Betty & Veronica: Shopping Spree! it has a collection of stories centering on Betty and Veronica's love of shopping. Betty Cooper and Veronica Lodge are two of my favorite characters and I'm sure this will be a fun read. And for the Star Wars Book Club, I found the comic Star Wars: Rebel Heist by Matt Kindt and Marco Castiello. The funny thing is this book was originally published by Dark Horse Comics (which is the edition I have) but since Disney owns Stars Wars this book is now published by Marvel. It's also no longer considered canon but I figure it would still be a good read.

The Book Girl's Book Club Pick:

Book: Ghana Must Go by Taiye Selasi

Description:

A renowned surgeon and failed husband, Kweku Sai dies suddenly at dawn outside his home in suburban Accra. The news of his death sends a ripple around the world, bringing together the family he abandoned years before. Moving with great elegance through time and place, Ghana Must Go charts their circuitous journey to one another and, along the way, teaches us that the truths we speak can heal the wounds we hide.

Electric, exhilarating and beautifully crafted, Ghana Must Go is at once a portrait of a modern family and a testament to the transformative power of unconditional love, from a debut novelist of extraordinary talent, Taiye Selasi.

Weekend Films: Hellboy, Little and Missing Link

I don't think I'll make it to the theatre this weekend but these are the movies I would like to see: Hellboy, Little and Missing Link. Out of the three movies, I've heard that Hellboy isn't good but I don't care I want to see it. Sometimes it's fun watching bad movies. And speaking of fun, Little and Missing Link both look like they will be fun and amusing to watch.

See, this makes me wish I could see all three movies this weekend instead of dealing with my busy schedule.

Hellboy

Comic Book News: Dark Horse will be Publishing "Stranger Things" Comic Books

According to reports, Netflix is partnering with Dark Horse Comics to publish Stranger Things comic books. The first miniseries starting this fall (the first issue is scheduled to be released on September 28th) will focus on Will Byers and what happened to him while he was in the Upside Down extra-dimensional world in the first season.

The four issue miniseries will be written by Jody Houser with illustrations by Stefano Martino, inks by Keith Champagne, color by Lauren Affe and letters by Nate Piekos.

This seems like it will be an interesting story and I have to make sure to add it to my pull list. Here's a look at some of the covers for the first issue:

Book Review: Bandette vol #2

Book: Bandette volume #2: Stealers, Keepers! (issues #6-9) by Paul Tobin with illustrations by Colleen Coover

Edition: Hardcover

Rating: 5 stars

Review:

This second volume of Bandette is ridiculously good fun as the mischievous and daring thief Bandette goes up against her rival Monsieur in a unique challenge. All the while, trying to stay several steps ahead of Absinthe, the head of the criminal organization FINIS and his hired killer, Il Tredici a.k.a The Strangler.

Robin Hood would be so proud of Bandette, she not only has her own band of merry men or the Urchins as she likes to call them. But she also successfully steals from the crooks and kicks butt all with a charming wit. She even helps the grumpy Police Inspector B. D. Beligique from time to time taking down criminals despite the fact that she's sort of one herself.

There were quite a few surprises that I certainly wasn't expecting especially not with how she had managed to undermine Absinthe and bringing about his spectacular capture. But I also wasn't expecting Monsieur to have a plan of his own to help someone escape from Absinthe.

Volume #2 is a well-written, endearingly funny and exciting read that I was hoping wouldn't fall short of the first volume which was amazing. This didn't disappoint, I enjoyed reading every page of it and I love the artwork. This book also includes several short stories which were written by Paul Tobin with illustrations by various artists.

This was fun, I'm going to have the get the third volume as soon as possible.

Currently Reading: Bandette vol #2

Oh, wow, it's been four years since I read the first volume of this series. I think I might go back and re-read my review for a refresher since it's been a while. I adore Bandette, she's a cool little Robin Hood like character and I can't wait to give this a read.

Book: Bandette volume #2: Stealers, Keepers! (issues #6-9) by Paul Tobin with illustrations by Colleen Coover

Edition: Hardcover

Description:

Bandette returns to steal readers' hearts once again! D. Belgique. But if FINIS's response could make this Bandette's final crime spree!

I can't believe it, the first book of The Legend of Korra comic book series will officially be out in June.
