Illustration of the Day: Lois and Clark

Illustration: Superman Forever issue #25

Another romantic moment between Lois and Clark. How sweet Clark actually had everything they talked about when Lois entered their home. It's so cute, they can't even bother to wait for the Champagne to chill before they start kissing.

Art of the Day: Korra from The Legend of Korra

Artwork: Korra by Stanley "Artgerm" Lau

I can't wait for the new season of The Legend of Korra to start. This was one amazing series and had some really cool characters.

Book of Disinterest: Fifty Shades of Grey

I have little interest in a book that features a stupid character that has no problem being dominated and controlled. I find that neither empowering nor entertaining.

I have no problem with sex in books but the book should have a real plot and interesting characters and not to mention be well written.

Everyone likes different types of books and for me, this isn't one of them. This is what annoys me with over hyped books, they get all the press while really good books barely receive any publicity, if at all.

Bonus Illustration of the Day: Batman and Nightwing

Illustration: Gotham Knights issue #17

This is why I miss the old DC Universe because of moments like this. I have yet to see any family connections within the Bat Family, that didn't feel fake or forced. I wouldn't have a problem with the New 52 if they were providing well written stories with amazing character development. Everything just feel so stagey and it's like they are trying too hard to be edgy and cool.

Art of the Day: Wonder Woman, Donna Troy and Wonder Girl

This sketch is really cool.

Illustration of the Day: Tim Drake's Upset Over No Longer Being A Robin

Illustration: Tim Drake Reacts to News that He was Never Robin by Mike Feehan

I am on the fence, whether or not to drop Teen Titans from my pull lists. There is nothing interesting about Tim "Drake" in the New 52. I just feel like they changed the character so much that I have no idea who this character really is. His last name's not really Drake (his family went into witness protection and Drake is his new cover last name) and there's rumors that he might be Jason Todd's biological brother (I hope that's just a bad rumor).

He was one of my favorite characters before the re-boot and now he's one of my least favorite in the New 52.

That's why I found this illustration by Mike Feehan so funny. Because it's easy to see Tim reacting this way and how frustrated he would get from all the changes DC is giving him. I also like the Stephanie Brown cameo at the end.

Book of Interest: Under the Dome

I want to read this. The whole concept seems so interesting with a town trapped under a dome. I'm going to add this to my reading list.

Book: Under the Dome by Stephen King

Book Description:

On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when -- or if -- it will go away.

Dale Barbara, Iraq vet and now a short-order cook, finds himself teamed with a few intrepid citizens -- town newspaper owner Julia Shumway, a physician's assistant at the hospital, a select-woman, and three brave kids. Against them stands Big Jim Rennie, a politician who will stop at nothing -- even murder -- to hold the reins of power, and his son, who is keeping a horrible secret in a dark pantry. But their main adversary is the Dome itself. Because time isn't just short. It's running out.

Illustration of the Day: Mia Dearden and Oliver Queen

Illustration: Green Arrow issue #3

What I like about Mia Dearden a.k.a. Speedy she didn't have a problem speaking her mind. She had a hard life before she got inducted into the Arrow family but she didn't feel ashame of what she had to do to get by. Mia was another character cut from the rebooted New 52.

Art of the Day: Batgirl (Cassandra Cain)

Artwork: Batgirl: Cass by shoot-o

Cass was one of the toughest and most skilled Batgirls. I would say her skills were on the same level as Bruce's (maybe even a little better than his). Maybe DC Comics will bring her back (hopefully not out of character) in the near future.

Book Review: The Birth of Venus

Book: The Birth of Venus by Sarah Dunant

Description:

Alessandra Cecchi is not quite fifteen when her father, a prosperous cloth merchant, brings a young painter back from northern Europe to decorate the chapel walls in the family’s Florentine palazzo. A child of the Renaissance, with a precocious mind and a talent for drawing, Alessandra is intoxicated by the painter’s abilities.

But their burgeoning relationship is interrupted when Alessandra’s parents arrange her marriage to a wealthy, much older man. Meanwhile, Florence is changing, increasingly subject to the growing suppression imposed by the fundamentalist monk Savonarola, who is seizing religious and political control. Alessandra and her native city are caught between the Medici state, with its love of luxury, learning, and dazzling art, and the hellfire preaching and increasing violence of Savonarola’s reactionary followers. Played out against this turbulent backdrop, Alessandra’s married life is a misery, except for the surprising freedom it allows her to pursue her powerful attraction to the young painter and his art.

The Birth of Venus is a tour de force, the first historical novel from one of Britain’s most innovative writers of literary suspense. It brings alive the history of Florence at its most dramatic period, telling a compulsively absorbing story of love, art, religion, and power through the passionate voice of Alessandra, a heroine with the same vibrancy of spirit as her beloved city.

This is really amazing! When I look at this picture, it looks as if Dick is either thinking about his new role as Batman or feeling sad over Bruce's "death".

Currently Reading: Jemima J

This seem like it's going to be a really good read as well as humorous.

Book: Jemima J: A Novel About Ugly Ducklings and Swans by Jane Green

Description:

Jemima Jones is overweight. About one hundred pounds overweight. Treated like a maid by her thin and social-climbing roommates, and lorded over by the beautiful Geraldine (less talented but better paid) at the Kilburn Herald, Jemima finds that her only consolation is food. Add to this her passion for her charming, sexy, and unobtainable colleague Ben, and Jemima knows her life is in need of a serious change. When she meets Brad, an eligible California hunk, over the Internet, she has the perfect opportunity to reinvent herself – as JJ, the slim, beautiful, gym-obsessed glamour girl. Book Review: Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Lost Adventures

Book: Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Lost Adventures by various writers and artists

Edition: Paperback

Description:

One of America's hottest shows returns. For three years, millions of eager fans tuned in each week to watch Nickelodeon's hit animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender. Ever since, fans have been hungry for more - and now their wait is finally over. This volume collects the long-out-of-print, fan-favorite comics previously published in Nickelodeon Magazine and with the Airbender DVDs, plus over 70 brand-new comics pages. That's over 26 stories set in Airbender continuity, by a host of top-notch talent, many of whom worked on the original animated series itself

Rating: 4 stars

My Review:

Reading this felt as if I were watching the TV series. Like the series, the stories were a blend of action, drama and humor. There were a couple of stories that felt a little sad such as "Relics" from the Book One: Water chapter. In "Relics", Aang searched the mountains to see if maybe there were any airbenders secretly hiding out but instead all he found was a trap set by Admiral Zhoa. In the end, he still had to deal with the fact that he is still the last airbender.

Another story that I really enjoyed was "No Benders Allowed" from Book Three: Fire chapter. In the story, Sokka and the other non-benders (The Duke and Teo) decided to create a club just for themselves since they are usually excluded from certain activities because they don't have any bending abilities. Sokka and the guys made their club seem so appealing and fun that it was making Aang (and secretly the other benders) envious to join.

I really enjoyed reading this book and as a fan of the show this was great. Now, I can't wait to read Avatar:TLA: The Promise trilogy.

My Favorite Fictional Bookworm: Blueberry Muffin

Artwork: Blueberry Muffin by XUnlimited

It's an understatement to say Blueberry Muffin loves to read. This girl is a total bookworm and not only does this Berry Bitty City resident love to read but she also owns a bookstore, Blueberry Books; writes and publishes books and she takes time out to read to the baby Berrykins. I guess that's why she's one of my favorite fictional bookworms.

Does DC Comics Really Love Their Fans?

Over the weekend, I read DC Comics' article "5.2 Reasons We Love Our Fans" and it does not seem to have gone over well with some of the fans. I read the fan comments and a majority feel as if DC Comics does not indeed love them. They commented that if they really cared they would actually listen to them and not just sweep their complaints and wishes under the rug.

To be honest the article didn't really feel sincere. It kind of felt like more PR. It's just a way to make it seem like they care but they're really just trying to promote themselves. I feel like DC Comics really doesn't love their fans but love their fans money.

Book Review: Birds of Prey Vol. 6: The Battle Within

Book: Birds of Prey volume #6: The Battle Within (issues #76-85) by Gail Simone with illustrations by

Edition: Trade Paperback

Description:

With their Gotham headquarters destroyed, the Birds take flight to Metropolis and beyond! Black Canary enlists the help of Wildcat in Singapore, while the Huntress infiltrates the Gotham mob!

Rating: 5 stars *****

My Review:

Okay, this was absolutely fantastic. The Birds went up against three slightly crazy ladies: Alice, Harvest and Thorn. Took on a drug supplier and the Gotham mob and Oracle had to deal with a very sever health problem. There were some great guest appearances: Ted Grant/Wildcat, Savant, Creote, and many more. This was very well written, full of action, drama and suspense and surprisingly funny. The Birds can not only kick butt, they also showed off their detective skills. This is a must read for any Birds of Prey fan.

Book Review: Superman: The Black Ring Volume 1

Book: Superman: The Black Ring volume #1 by Paul Cornell with illustrations by Pete Woods

Edition: Trade

Description:

When Lex Luthor finally regained control of LexCorp, he thought he had everything he wanted. But in BLACKEST NIGHT, he briefly became an Orange Lantern and got a taste of true power. Now he'll do anything - anything - to get that power back. Buckle in for a greatest hits tour of the DCU's most wanted as Lex Luthor begins an epic quest for power, all brought to you by new ongoing writer Paul Cornell and artist Pete Woods, with covers by David Finch.

Rating: 4 stars

Review:

I read the trade edition, which showed Lex Luthor at his finest, being a power driven megalomaniac. He was searching for a way to unlock the mystery of the Black Lantern rings, however there were others trying to gather the information as well. Lex was becoming unhinged as he tried to gather more information causing him to take dangerous risks.

Lex Luthor is not one of my favorite characters but this book had me interested in what Luthor was getting himself into. This was better than I expected. It had me feeling some sympathy for the character because for some reason he tends to see himself as the hero and Superman as the undeserving god mocking humanity. Sympathy aside, Luthor does bring the crazy by having an android that resembles Lois Lane (as well as calling it by that name). Perhaps having her around is another step closer to being on par with Superman.

I wonder what the second volume will have in store for Luthor. Looking forward to reading it.

10 Reasons Why The Birds of Prey TV Series Didn't Work For Me

I bought the DVD (a few years ago) because I remember watching a few episodes on TV. I liked the show but I don't think it should have been called Birds of Prey because if they couldn't make it like or similar to the comic books then they shouldn't have tried to produce this show.

Some reasons the show didn't work:

1. No Helena Bertinelli. I didn't understand why they didn't use the then current Huntress from the comics. There was no need for a blood connection to Batman for BoP to work - the comic already had a pretty good fan base and good amount of success - without that connection. By using the Helena Kyle version, they made her a surrogate daughter to Barbara and they missed out on showing how much Barbara and Helena didn't quite get along at first because Huntress hooked up with Nightwing. Also, why did they give Huntress powers? Even the Helena Wayne version in the comics didn't have powers. What was the point of that?

2. The whole Black Canary situation was confusing. In the BoP comic book, the three main members are: Oracle, Huntress and Black Canary but on this show they didn't have Black Canary as a member. What they had was a teenage Dinah Redmond (Lance) who didn't have the canary cry but various psychic abilities. She was the daughter of Black Canary who was named Carolyn Lance who had the canary cry but was not a member of the team. It was unclear if Dinah was also going to go by the Black Canary code name as well. I also found Dinah to be really annoying. I guess they thought they needed a teenager on the show to bring in the teen viewers.

In the comics the first Black Canary (Dinah Drake Lance) didn't have the canary cry, she was just a non-powered superhero. However, her daughter the second Black Canary (Dinah Laurel Lance) did acquire the ability and was a member of the Birds of Prey.

3. They didn't use enough of the Birds' villains. The episode with Shiva doesn't even count, they did a horrible job with that character. Harley should not have been the main villain and if they were going to use Harley they may as well have brought in Poison Ivy (for a guest appearance at least). They also didn't need the metahuman of the week for each episode.

4. No costumes. This was one of the main complaints from fans. I think the show would have been better if Helena and Dinah had worn costumes. Helena would complain about her secret identity but how can she keep her identity a secret when she doesn't wear a mask. Plus she worked in a popular bar. What's to stop a villain from recognizing her while she's working? Absolutely nothing.

5. No recurring characters from the comic books. It would have been nice to see: Batman, Nightwing, Commissioner Jim Gordon, Wonder Woman, Robin (Tim Drake), Catwoman (she could have been used if they had not gone with the Helena Kyle Huntress), Batgirl (Cassandra Cain), Vixen, Savant, and more.

6. Barbara's boyfriend Wade was not needed. Wade was pretty much useless for this show. They could have just brought in Nightwing every now and then since Barbara and Dick were suppose to have an on-again-off-again type of relationship anyway.

7. Batman leaving Gotham. It made no sense at all and showed that the producers of the show not only didn't read any BoP Comics but also didn't read any Batman comics as well. Batman would never leave Gotham or give up being Batman. Also, it's hard to believe that no one ever heard of Batman on the police force in Gotham City. How can that be?

8. Why didn't Barbara know who Dr. Harleen Quinzel was? Since Barbara was once Batgirl she would have spent plenty of time fighting Harley. It's public knowledge in Gotham that Harley used to be a psychologist and not to mention all her time getting arrested and being locked up in Arkham Asylum.

9. Too many Metahumans. Why were there so many people with powers? Gotham isn't known for having that many metahumans.

10. Poorly written. Each episode didn't seem to have a lot going on other than the Birds need to stop the metahuman of the week. There was no intricate plot or anything to really engage the viewer.

All in all the show would have been good if it were just a random superhero show. However, it felt nothing like the Birds of Prey.

Currently Reading: Superman: The Black Ring Vol. 1 and Static Shock (New 52) Vol. 1: Supercharged

This weekend I plan on reading a lot of my comics. Does it annoy you when book snobs try to say comics aren't real books? I really don't care what they think, for me if I like it I'm going to read it.

Book: Superman: The Black Ring Volume 1 by Paul Cornell and Pete Woods (issues #890 - 895)

A mysterious tragedy forces the Hawkins family to relocate from Dakota to New York City and Virgil must start all over again in a new high school, as well as a new internship at S.T.A.R. Labs. Book Review: Ultra Maniac Volume 2 (Manga)

Book: Ultra Maniac vol #2 (chapters #6-10) by Wataru Yoshizumi

Description:

When Yuta, a boy from Nina's home-dimension, enrolls in her earth school, his motivations are suspect even before he secretly gives her best friend Ayu a camera guaranteed to reveal true love. Ayu quickly learns that love is an emotion most fickle, and not even Nina's magic can predict the target of Cupid's pointed arrow.

Rating: 5 stars

My Review:

Love is abound in this volume. Ayu still has a hug crush on Tetsushi, but Nina is also starting to fall for him. After Nina and Tetsushi spoke about his out of character behavior (from the last volume) she starts to see him in a different light which had her feeling confused. Things become even more complicated for Nina when her old childhood friend (from her magical world), Yuta transfers to her new school. He immediately starts to fall for Ayu but harbors a crush for Nina.

Misunderstanding and hurt feelings have everyone trying to figure out who they like and what's in their hearts. I thought this was really funny and sweet. I don't want to leave out Nina adorable pet Leo who can talk and can magically turn into a human.  Ultra Maniac series keep getting better and better.

Illustration of the Day: Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson

I think this is so sweet.

Art of the Day: Lady Blackhawk (Zinda Blake)

Artwork: Lady Blackhawk by artgk

Lady Blackhawk a.k.a. Zinda Blake is one of the craziest toughest ladies in DC Comics well aside from Helena Bertinelli. She is another one of my favorite characters. Besides being tough and crazy, Zinda is also very loyal, brave and a very glass half full kind of person. I don't know how she didn't make the cut for the new 52 but she is surely missed in the new Birds of Prey.

I think Starling is a poor substitute for this amazing character and it seems like DC is trying a little too hard trying to replace Zinda (and Bertinelli) with her. Why didn't they just use this awesome pilot?

Book Review: I Scream, You Scream

Book: I Scream, You Scream (A Mystery a La Mode book #1) Wendy Lyn Watson

Description:

Unfortunately, Remember the A-la-mode's profits are melting faster than a snow cone in July  — and Tally's stuck scooping sundaes for her two-timing ex-husband and his bodacious new girlfriend, Brittanie, at his company luau. To make matters worse, twenty years after she dumped him in the Tasty-Swirl parking lot, Tally's high school beau, Finn Harper, comes back to town  — looking every bit as delicious as a double-dip raspberry mascarpone waffle cone.

The cherry on top? Brittanie drops dead, and Tally's suddenly the prime suspect in her murder investigation. To catch a killer, Tally will have to churn up Dalliance's darkest secrets and dip deep into the past. But can tally freeze out the real culprit before a murder charge puts her dreams on ice for good?

Rating: 3 stars

Review:

I enjoyed reading this. It was fast paced and had an interesting plot not to mention being quite funny. The mystery focused on the murder of Brittanie Brinkman, the girlfriend of main character Tally Jones' ex-husband. Tally in her attempt to help her ex, decided to investigate the murder. Unfortunately, while she was looking into the murder the police were starting to focus on her as the likely suspect. Tally stumbled along the way as she conducted her investigation which wasn't a bad thing because it showed that she didn't have a real clue how to solve a mystery. She just wanted to help find the killer.

The story was good I just felt like it took a while for the actual mystery solving to get started. I also, started to get a little annoyed with Tally's lack of self-esteem. She was also kind of a door mat but she did start to get better near the end.

I will read the second book to see how the series develops, hopefully it will be a good read as well.

Art of the Day: Tatsuma and Kyouichi from Tokyo Majin

Artwork: Kyouichi and Tatsuma: Tokyo Majin by Kane-Lavi

Tokyo Majin is one of my favorite anime series, it's about five teenagers including the two in the picture above: Tatsuma Hiyuu (blue hoodie) and Kyouichi Horaiji, who try to protect Tokyo from monsters and demons.

Tatsuma is known as the mysterious transfer student who contantly falls asleep in class while Kyouichi is known to get into fights and never seems to finish his school work. In one episode, their teacher Maria Alucard once described them as the juvenile delinquent (Kyouichi) and the narcoleptic transfer student (Hiyuu). That show had a perfect blend of drama, comedy and the dark and creepy.

Wish List Wednesday: The Runaway Princess

I saw this at the store over the weekend and I think I'm going to go back and buy it. The description reminds me of the movie "The Prince and Me" which I really enjoyed.

Book: The Runaway Princess by Hester Browne

Book Description:

If Amy Wilde’s new boyfriend, Leo, treats her like a queen, that’s because he’s secretly a prince himself: Leopold William Victor Wolfsburg of Nirona, the ninth most eligible royal bachelor in the world. Amy soon discovers that dating an heir to a throne has many charms—intimate alfresco dinners, glittering galas, and, for a girl who lives in jeans and wellies, a dazzling new wardrobe with tiaras to match.

But there are also drawbacks: imagine the anxiety of meeting your boyfriend’s parents multiplied by a factor of “riding in a private jet,” “staying in a castle,” and “discussing the line of succession over lunch.” Not to mention the sudden press interest in your very un-royal family.

When an unexpected turn of events pushes Leo closer to the throne, the Wolfsburgs decide to step up Amy’s transformation from down-to-earth gardener to perfectly polished princess-in-waiting. Amy would do anything for Leo, but is finding her Prince Charming worth the price of losing herself?

Book Review: Bergdorf Blondes

Book: Bergdorf Blondes by Plum Sykes

Description:

Plum Sykes beguiling debut welcomes readers to the glamorous world of Park Avenue Princesses, the girls who careen through Manhattan in search of the perfect Fake Bake (tan acquired from Portofino Tanning Salon), a ride on a PJ (private jet) with the ATM (rich boyfriend), and the ever-elusive fiance.

With invitations to high-profile baby showers and benefits, more Marc Jacobs clothes than is decent, and a department store heiress for a best friend, our heroine known only as Moi is living at the peak of New York society. But what is Moi to do when her engagement falls apart? Can she ever find happiness in a city filled with the distractions of Front Row Girls, dermatologists, premieres, and eyebrow waxes? Is it possible to find love in a town where her friends think that the secret to happiness is getting invited to the Van Cleef and Arpels private sample sale? And how is she going to deal with the endless phone calls from her mother in England demanding that she get married to the Earl next door?

With enormous wit and an insider's eye, Sykes captures the nuances of the rich and spoiled in a heartwarming social satire, featuring a loveable "champagne bubble of a girl" who's just looking for love (and maybe the perfect pair of Chloe jeans).

Illustration of the Day: Wonder Woman playing with Barbie and Ken dolls

Illustration: DC Retroactive: Wonder Woman - The '90s Vol 1 issue #1

Diana was filling in as leader of The Blossoms for her friend Etta Candy. The Blossoms are a group for girls sort of like the Girl Scout's. Diana as leader was teaching the young girls how to empower themselves so they can aspire to succeed in life. However, her play time with the dolls could use a little work.

I have to agree with the little girl that Diana truly is terrible at playing house but it's funny to watch.

I miss the Wonder Woman who would do silly things like this.

Book Girl Thoughts: Lack of Books Advertised in the Sales Paper

I was looking through the rather large Target sales paper (for this week) and I noticed that they have featured a lot of different items. However, one thing they seem to be lacking in promotion are books. They have only one book being advertised. Just One Book. I guess books are not high on the wish list for Christmas gifts except for us book worms.

It just would have been nice to see a larger selection of books being advertised in the Target sales paper. Well, at least Target had one book featured, K-Mart and Meijer didn't bother to include even that. Perhaps, books are not that important.
