Reader Question: Question about Girl Power Comics

A reader left a question on my review for "Bitch Planet vol #1" asking "What girl power comics are there?"

My initial answer to the reader's question was that there are way too many comics to name. Girl Power can mean different things to different people and in regards to comics Girl Power to me features well-written, strong, intelligent, fun and interesting characters.

Below are just a very small list of some of my favorites:

Lois Lane: A Celebration of 75 Years (it has a very good selection of comics)

Batgirl: Year One

Wonder Woman: Who is Wonder Woman

Birds of Prey (pretty much anything published before the New 52 is worth reading)

Gotham City Sirens (the entire series was great)

Reader Question: Funniest Book I've Read

A reader e-mailed me a question asking:

What was the funniest book you've read lately?


Answer:

I've read some funny books lately but the one that really stands out to me the most is The Rise and Fall of a Theater Geek by Seth Rudetsky. What made this so funny was three things 1) the story, 2) the writing style and 3) all the zany things that main character Justin Goldblatt got himself into.

This book surprised me because I was expecting some humor but I wasn't expecting to actually laugh out loud.

Reader Question: Wonder Woman Comics

This question was posted in the comment section for a recent currently reading post. The reader wanted to know what Wonder Woman comics I would recommend. As a WW fan, I couldn't pass up answering this question.

Thanks you for writing,

Since you've never read a Wonder Woman comic I would recommend starting with Sensation Comics Featuring Wonder Woman. That series features a lot of different stories that will help you understand who the character is.

Then maybe pick up Wonder Woman volume #1: Who is Wonder Woman (it's available in the trade edition). And thanks to digital you can now read a lot of the older Wonder Woman stories and by old I mean the ones written by WW creator William Moulton Marston.

You can also check out the some what controversial New 52 Wonder Woman series by Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang (issues #1-35). In that series there were quite a few changes to WW's origin but despite the changes it wasn't bad.

I would also, check out some books by Greg Rucka, Phil Jimenez, George Perez and many more. If possible, go to your local comic bookstore and see what's there, you never know what you might find.

Update: I forgot to mention Wonder Woman: Odyssey Vol. #1 and #2 by J. Michael Straczynski. I like that it took a different approach to WW.

Reader Question: Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman's new costumes

Answer:

Donutpinkiepie, thank you for writing in.

If you're not sure what the reader's question is about, they are referring to the upcoming new changes to Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman's costumes. When DC Comics returns after their Convergence "break", they will be implementing new changes (a.k.a. more gimmicks) starting with changing Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman's iconic suits (again).

By now nearly everyone probably seen pictures of the new changes, if not I posted them below. I really wasn't going to talk about those changes because initially I was hoping it was just an early April Fool's Day joke but of course DC lost their sense a humor once the New 52 was created. My answer to your question is simple, I really can't stand any of these new looks.


Superman

As for Superman, I seriously can't believe they put him back in jeans and a t-shirt. He looks anything but heroic. This is so generic, take away the Super symbol and this is just some random angry guy about to get into another fight.



Batman

Seriously, why is Batman in this idiotic robot suit? He's Batman not Iron Man and please tell me that is not a gun he has in his hand.



Wonder Woman

This suit is so laughable. What were they thinking? Did they just decide to just draw every imaginable item of clothing possible to put on her. This is just too busy. What is with those shoulder pads, thigh high boots, crotch flap and blades? I'm surprised they didn't give her a face mask.


Sometimes it's embarrassing being a DC Comics fan when they do stupid stuff like this.

Reader Questions: Book series I stop reading

Thank you for asking this question.

Yes, the book series I stopped reading is the Hannah Swensen Mystery series by Joanne Fluke. Even though I thought book #16, Red Velvet Cupcake Murder was really predictable and a little boring I was still interested in reading the next book Blackberry Pie Murder. However, that's where the series lost the plot. There was barely a mystery in that book and all the characters were like caricatures and by then I was no longer interested in reading any more from this series. And book #18 is out right now and I have absolutely no desire to pick it up.

This series had started out good but those last few books started to go downhill real fast. Something that may surprise you is that I'm going to watch the Hallmark channel movie adaption of Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder (book #1) premiering May 10th on the Hallmark Movies and Mystery channel.

So, the movie I'll watch but I'm so through with the book series.

Zuko's girl asked: What did you think of the Agent Carter finale?

Answer:

Marvel's Agent Carter is one of my favorite shows but I haven't seen the finale yet. But as soon as I do I'll post something about it. I so love this show and can't wait to tell you what I think of the last episode.



Second Question:

Anonymous (they asked if I could not include their name) asked: Have you been watching Empire?

Answer:

Yes, I have been watching it. And all I can say is this is a great show. Something that I wish would happen soon is Cookie (played by Taraji P. Henson) to finally be through with Lucious. He wouldn't have that company without her and she definitely know the music industry better than him.




Third Question:

Gothica Christie asked: I'm having Naruto withdrawals. Don't think it would be so bad if the ending for the Manga series and The Last movie both weren't a huge giant piece of shit. What the Hell happened?! There is no Fucking Way Naruto would have married Hinata, there's no way!!!

Answer:

Gothica Christie, love the name, that's so cool. Wow, okay what you asked is similar to a post I am currently working on because like you (and quite a lot of other fans) I am very disappointed with the way this long running series has ended.

It felt like Masashi Kishimoto got lazy and just rushed the ending because nearly every character was out of character and I can't believe Naruto would give up being friends with Sasuke and Sakura. I also strongly agree that Naruto would not have ended up with Hinata, they had to fabricate memories to make it seem as if she's always been there for him. Hinata was never there for him and throughout the series she was nothing more than an obsessive stalker whose entire life revolved around Naruto. If anything I think Naruto would have ended up with Sakura.

The Last movie was really awful with the plot being about nothing but Hinata and her stalkerish love for Naruto. This movie was such a waste of time.

What a lousy way to end such a great series. I will have more to say about this in an upcoming post.

A friend talked me into watching Arrow. Didn't think I would like it (no offense I'm not into comic book stuff). Was wondering what you think of the show?


Well SunshineGirl, I tried watching the show when it first premiered but I really couldn't get into it. I even attempted to try watching it again since the first season is on Netflix but I find the acting to be really bad as well as some of the storylines. I don't really like this take on Green Arrow or any of the other characters on the show.

However, I've heard the series does get better but I haven't decided if I'm going to give it a third attempt to see if it does.

I HATE that stupid Superman/Wonder Woman so called relationship. I know you're a fan of Lois and Clark, do you think they will ever date is this F*$D UP New 52?


SeXyNerdGirl88 I couldn't agree with you more in regards to this relationship. As for Lois and Clark dating in the New 52, your guess is as good as mine. With the attitude some of the executives over at DC Comics seem to have towards Lois Lane I'm not going to hold my breath that it will be soon. And with the way they are trying so hard to promote that fauxmance who knows how long they will tire of the pairing.

I for one hope it's soon because it makes no sense for both Clark and Diana to keep pining over other people while being in a relationship together.

I'm not sure if you read Smallvill Season 11 if not give it a read. It's a good series and it's one of the only series where Lois and Clark are still together. I truly recommend picking up the first volume, it's worth reading.

What to Wear: For Comic-Con

I recently received an e-mail from a reader (from the blog's old e-mail address, please note: I have just changed the e-mail for this blog, the new one is BookGirlLoveofReading@gmail.com). The reader asked what she should wear (that's not a costume) to Comic-Con. Also, this will also be her first time attending the local comic-con in her city.

The first thing you want to think about is comfort. Since, you're going to be walking around a lot as well as standing in a lot of long lines.

Then for the outfit, I would suggest pairing a really cool superhero t-shirt with jeans. And if the weather is a little chilly, I would add a cute blazer, hoodie or cardigan. I would pair the outfit with a comfy pair of shoes like some really cute flats or gym shoes. Don't forget to take a tote bag to put all of your stuff in (but first check with the venue to see if it's allowed).

For me, I would pull my hair up into a bun and wear a pair of drop earrings.
