Comic Book Wednesday: Oct. 7th Picks

There are a lot of new books out today and I'm glad I was able to call to add a few books to my list because I'm pretty sure most will sell out before I get to the store.

But there are a few comics that are not on my list that I'm thinking about picking up: Cyborg #3, My Little Pony Friends Forever #21, Codename: Baboushka # 1 and Star Wars: Lando #5 (and #4).

Three Marvel All-New, All-Different books out today, that I decided to pick up in trade instead are: Amazing Spider-Man, Invincible Iron Man and Doctor Strange. I already added them to my wish list.

Book Review: A Wedding in Truhart

Book: A Wedding in Truhart (Truhart book #1) by Cynthia Tennent

Source: Borrowed from Publisher/NetGalley for an honest review

Publication: Available now

Rating: 2 1/2 stars (Did Not Finish)

Review:

I'm sure this may be a lovely book but for the moment it's just not holding my attention. It's a standard chick lit with the main character Annie a bit of a mess along with her life. Her younger sister Charlotte is getting married, so along with her mother and aunt the trio travel to Atlanta from Truhart, Michigan to help celebrate the engagement.

When they showed up for the party it was an elegant event held at a luxury hotel which unfortunately, Annie, her mom Virginia and aunt Adelaide "Addie" were not exactly dressed up enough for. There was another surprise in store for Annie, her old friend and her older brother Ian's best friend Nick Conrad, who also happen to be her old childhood crush was there. Nick will be the Best Man in the wedding and she Maid of Honor. It's been years since she's seen Nick yet she's still as infatuated as ever with him. Despite his rudeness and his strong desire to really have nothing to do with her, she can't help putting him up on a pedestal or comparing him to how he used to be. Well, that's the thing, she really doesn't know who he is, now if ever, since she's always looked up to him as her prince or knight in shinning armor. But a car trip back to Michigan gave them a chance to reconnect along with a possible spark of romance.

Charlotte's upcoming wedding to Henry Lowell seems to have her trying too hard to impress her future in-laws and also being embarrassed of her loving if not rambunctious family. Horrible weather makes it impossible for the wedding to be in Atlanta and it will now be moved to Truhart held at the family inn.  Although the family's inn is struggling at the moment, Annie and her family have been working hard to keep it from going under.

The story was okay if not a little predictable but it was the characters that I couldn't connect with, each character seems to fit a certain archetype from the rich snobs to the small town eccentrics almost to the point that they seem one dimensional. As I reading this I could help wonder if Nick and Annie were somehow modeled after Mark Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice from the misunderstandings to the rudeness.

I don't know, maybe I'll read this again some other time but for now I'm going to shelve it.

Rating: 5 stars

Review:

I know, that high rating is a tad shocking for anything Superman New 52 related (especially if you visit my blog quite regularly) but the first volume was actually good then the series started to go downhill at a steady rate. And the current DC You take on the Superman series really makes the New 52 version seem down right impressive.

The first issue gives readers a look at the new world of Superman, first with Lois Lane receiving a promotion from reporter to the new Executive Producer of the Planet Global Network (P.G.N.)'s nightly news division and Executive Vice-President of New Media. That a great title but it pretty much equates to getting Lois out of the way. Those are not the only changes, the Daily Planet was bought out by Morgan Edge and is now folded into his media conglomerate Galaxy Communications. The old Daily Planet building has been torn down while a newer updated version is in a new location in the city.

Lois may be in charge of the TV news, however Perry White is still in charge of the print division. Meanwhile, Jimmy who is still a photojournalist was mostly shown working with fellow Daily Planet photojournalist Miko Ogawa.

So, now where does that leave Clark Kent, well...he doesn't seem to be handling all the changes in good stride. He's mad that Lois and Perry have sold out their journalist integrity by working with Edge who if he had no opposition would turn the paper into another tabloid rag. But mind you Clark is also still working for the Planet but I guess that's not considered being a sellout that only pertains to just Lois and Perry. Prior to the New 52 Lois and Perry were the epitome of journalist integrity but that's a post for another day.

Anyway, while Clark was off flying around moping, as Superman he attempted to stop a couple of crooks who had stolen a tanker filled with hazardous chemicals but before he could end the situation a huge fire erupted from a nearby building and a huge fire ball took out the crooks.

The fire came from a strange creature that seemed to be made from fire and was actually giving Superman quite a bit of trouble in stopping. The creature appeared to be speaking some sort of language but the only word he could understand was Krypton. Lois although tucked away in the shiny new Daily Planet was able to get the story on air but without putting her staff in danger.

A surprise to the print staff was Clark getting the lead story especially since no one saw him in the area. But there was a surprise in store for him when he visited Lois and met her "friend" Jonathan Carroll.

Issue #2 finds Superman dealing with yet another mysterious creature speaking the same language as the first and this time, he was unable to see it. But thanks to quick thinking from Lois who was able to get Jimmy to keep the camera on Superman it finally allowed Clark to see what he was fighting. Meanwhile in a subplot it appears a homeless man and a hospitalized guard (who got caught in the fire from the first issue) may have a connection to the strange incidents plaguing both Superman and Metropolis.

Issue #3 finds yet another mysterious creature made of ice attacking the city, the creature was also speaking the same strange language. There is a connection with the creature and fellow Planet reporter Heather Kelley, the guard and the homeless man. This issue also focused on Clark's recently strange and uncharacteristic behavior that had him being very unreliable and moody.

Issues #4-6 had Superman being questioned by police about missing reporter Heather Kelley but also as Clark being questioned about his strange behavior by Lois. Superman also found himself ambushed by the three strange creatures but the after effects from the fight seemed to have caused a personality change. No longer was Superman there to protect the city he was now taking extreme measure to "save" it. All of this was culminating into a huge fight between Supergirl and the Man of Steel and not to mention the military possibly getting involved. But something wasn't right? This couldn't possibly be Superman. I don't want to ruin the ending because it's very interesting. But I will say that the Supergirl shown in issue #6 was better written than the one shown in the second volume in her own series.

I don't know why it's taken me so long to finally write up my review for this, perhaps on some level I don't want to write up the rest of the series when the quality dropped. Despite Lois getting the Rapunzel treatment of being "locked" away in the Daily Planet at least she wasn't too poorly written (I'm still not sure she would be working for Morgan Edge) and was actually shown a lot as opposed to how she was barely shown and very poorly written later on in the series. I loved the chemistry between Lois and Clark no matter if they're mad or angry with each other you can see how much they care for each other even if it is only as friendship.

There is this part of the New 52 that I never fully grasped which is why DC Comics wanted to create a world where people fear and hate superheroes? Anyway, this was a good read, I wish I could say that for the rest of the series.

Two shows to set your DVR for: Doc McStuffins Meets the First Lady and a New Scooby-Doo Cartoon Premieres

Doc McStuffins

Doc McStuffins  9:00 AM EST  Disney Channel

On today's new episode of Doc McStuffins, Dottie "Doc" McStuffin and several other children who make a difference are invited to the White House for a special ceremony.

The episode will also show Doc and the other children meeting the First Lady Michelle Obama, taking a tour of the White House and receiving awards.

I like Doc McStuffin, it's a cute show that inspires kids to follow their dreams and have fun along the way.

Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!

Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!  premieres tonight at 7:00 PM EST  Cartoon Network

I'm a huge Scooby-Doo fan but I wasn't a fan of Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. because for one thing it wasn't very kid-friendly and the mystery solving became secondary to all the other unnecessary drama on the show. It's was very dark and gloomy and way too focused on romance. They made Fred really dumb, Velma self-conscious, Daphne desperate and Shaggy a loser. Now with the second season you could tell they tried to put the mystery solving first but by then the show lost it's appeal with me. I wasn't surprised when this show didn't get another season, it wasn't the best.

Which is why I was so happy to hear a new Scooby-Doo! series was being made. From the trailer it looks like the show is going for more humor as the gang tries to solve mysteries. The voice actors for this series are Frank Welker (who has been the voice of Fred Jones since the original Scooby-Doo series and also recently started voicing Scooby-Doo), Grey DeLisle (Daphne Blake) and Matthew Lillard (Norville "Shaggy" Rogers) with Kate Micucci (The Big Bang Theory and Garfunkel and Oats) as the new voice of Velma Dinkley.

Book Review: Mother of Demons

Book: Mother of Demons (Department 18 book #5) by Maynard Sims

Source: Borrowed from Publisher/NetGalley for an honest review

Publication: Avilable now

Description:

The hunt is on! Alice Logan has gone missing, and Harry Bailey and Department 18 have been called to help find her. The main suspect is Anton Markos, a satanic cult leader who has a predilection for young women like Alice. Members of Markos’s cult start turning up dead—shredded by what seems to be a wild animal. Is there a madman within the cult? Or is it something far more horrible? Can Department 18 discover the impossible truth and end the spree of murder, insanity and carnage? Or will they become the prey?

Rating: 2 stars

Review:

I'm not sure how this qualifies on the horror scale but it's more thriller than scary. When Alice Logan, the niece of Violet Bulmer went missing, Violet asked her old friend Harry Bailey, a detective for Department 18 a government agency set up to investigate psychic and supernatural phenomena, to help look for her.

Prior to going missing Alice's parents had taken her to a rehabilitation clinic to help her detox from the crystal meth she been hooked on. Alice had gotten herself involved with a cult which was lead by the enigmatic Erik Strasser who also introduced her to drugs among other things.

When Alice goes missing from the clinic, Violet contacted her friend Harry to see if he could help locate her. Initially, Harry didn't think Alice's disappearance had anything to do with the supernatural but the more he looked into it, it was turning out to be more than a simple missing persons case.

When the local police find the body of a teen girl with ritualistic wounds, is there a connection between this, the cult, Greek Mythology and Alice's disappearance? As more bodies start turning up including that of main suspect Erik Strasser, the case has quickly changed direction.

Although the story moved along at a fast-pace, I thought the story was just okay not really that engaging. It started out good but then it started to fizzle and become a run of the mill supernatural story but it did have a twist near the end.

Currently Reading: Shoe Addicts Anonymous

I spotted this sitting on my bookshelf and wanted to give it a read. I like shoes but I'm no shoe addict, but I have friends that are. It seems as if the characters in this story are going through a lot but friendship and their love of shoes just might be what will get them through it.

Book: Shoe Addicts Anonymous (Shoe Addict book #1) by Beth Harbison

Description:

Four Different Women. One Common Shoe Size. And A Shared Lust For Fabulous Footwear.

Helene Zaharis's  politician husband  keeps her on a tight leash and cancels her credit cards as a way of controlling her. Lorna Rafferty is up to her eyeballs in debt and can't stop her addiction to Ebay. Sandra Vanderslice, battling agoraphobia, pays her shoe bills by working as a phone sex operator. And Jocelyn Bowen is a nanny for the family from hell (who barely knows a sole from a heel but who will do anything to get out of the house).

On Tuesday nights, these women meet to trade shoes, and, in the process, form friendships that will help them each triumph over their problems—from secret pasts to blackmail, bankruptcy, and dating.  Funny, emotional, and powerful, Shoe Addicts Anonymous is the perfect read for any woman who has ever struggled to find the perfect fit.

Lois Lane Friday: What Does Lois Lane Mean to Me?

This question of some form has been floating around the internet for a while, even the author Gwenda Bond asked fans "what does Lois Lane mean to you?" while she promoted her book Lois Lane: Fallout.

I was thinking about why Lois is one of my favorite characters and why she inspires me?

Lois Lane probably means a lot of different things to me such as a hero without a cape but also as a woman who gets to take pride in her career. I see a strong, independent, opinionated woman who loves her job as a reporter and is great at it. In the past, women didn't have the luxury of pursuing careers that interested them, they were relegated to jobs that were deemed "women's work".

But something I found fascinating about the first issue of Action Comics (published in 1938) was when Lois Lane first appeared on page, she was in a career very few women had. Even in some of those older comics Lois was passed over for assignments or given crappy ones because she was a woman but she didn't let that stop her from doing her best on even the most mundane of stories. That reminds me of something I once read about Gloria Steinem, who said that at one point in her career she was getting assignments such as writing about stockings while her male colleagues were getting a chance to write about hard hitting news. Like Lois, Gloria didn't let that hold her back and she went on to have a legendary career and become an Icon.

I've always seen Lois as the ultimate career woman, she works hard but she also enjoys her achievements. Although, the impact of her words in what she writes is very important to her she still enjoys her success. What fun would life be if we didn't celebrate a little? That doesn't mean turning into a braggart, to me celebrating means taking a moment to enjoy what you accomplished while bragging is telling any and everyone everything you've done or achieved regardless if they want to hear about it or not.

I see nothing wrong with framing your diploma and putting it on the wall or mantle, you earned that. Just as there is nothing wrong with displaying any awards that you've received. Case in point, on Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Lois showed off her three Kerth Awards in a display case in her apartment.

I have seen in various articles and books stated that some women experience fraud or impostor syndrome. It's where despite being successful in their careers and jobs some women (and men) constantly feel as if they are frauds and it's only a matter of time before they are found out. They feel as if it's not their skills that got them ahead but luck or other factors.

I mention this because Lois is rarely shown as being anything but confident and she certainly doesn't downplay her success and achievements. She's a great writer and reporter and knows that her hard work, skills and experiences are the reason she's one of the best in journalism. See, this is why Lois is inspiring to me, even if she happens to be fictional.

To answer the question, "what does Lois Lane means to me?" She's a successful career woman who inspires me to pursue my career but also to enjoy my achievements.

TV Round Up: Fall TV

Ah, the joy of having a day off. I spent a good portion of the day getting caught up some of the new Fall TV shows (Rosewood, Blindspot and Minority Report) and two old favorites (The Big Bang Theory and Castle). My reviews cover the current two episodes of each series in this post.

I still have to watch the Muppets but I'm also excited for the new season of Sleepy Hollow which premieres tonight. Those shows will be in the next Fall TV Round Up.

The Big Bang Theory  Mondays  8:00 PM  CBS

Rating: 5 stars

Okay, I'll be honest I never thought Leonard and Penny would actually get married but I'm glad they did because it's going to add another dimension to the series. Are they going to eventually move into Penny's apartment or continue to live separately? Where ever they end up, I highly doubt Sheldon will move out, since technically he lived there first.

Something, I am still surprised about was Sheldon was thinking about wanting to marry Amy (season 8 finale). But since Amy broke up with him before he could ask her, he's now acting even more loonier than ever instead of telling her how he felt about her. Well, I guess it wouldn't be Sheldon if he actually told Amy how he really felt.

This show is still one of my Must Watch Shows.

Rosewood   Wednesdays  8:00 PM  FOX

Rating: 3 1/2 stars

I like this show it's like a cross between Psych and House with Dr. Beaumont Rosewood Jr. being an annoying yet lovable pest as he helps the police solve crimes. So far I'm still waiting on Dr. Rosewood and Detective Annalise Villa to have more chemistry. Because the edges are still pretty rough with them trying to get along and work together.

I'm going to continue watching this series because I like the characters and the mysteries are interesting and it seems like it's gearing up to be a good series.

Castle  Mondays  10:00 PM ABC

Rating: 5 stars

This new season started out with newly appointed Captain Kate Beckett dealing with extreme danger as she found herself being hunted by a mercenary squad. That left Castle, Alexis, Esposito and Ryan trying to play catch up as they attempt to not only find her but also to figure out what was going on.

Those first two episodes were interesting but I feel like Kate's obsession is either going get her killed or someone close to her.

Blindspot   Mondays  10:00 NBC

Rating: 5 stars

This is a good show. It's a fast-paced thriller that follows a woman given the name Jane Doe who is covered in tattoos and has no idea who she is. But thanks to her tattoos she is now assisting the FBI as the tattoos lead them to clues to possible crimes.

There are moments when she will get random glimpses of her memory but it's not enough for her to determine who she is. There is a possibility that Jane may be connected to agent Kurt Weller but as Jane gathers more memories she's not so sure she's one of the good guys.

It will be interesting to see who Jane really is because there so much about her that doesn't make sense. I can't wait to see the next episode.

Minority Report   Mondays  9:00 PM  Fox

Rating: 5 stars

I really like this show, it's set in the future where crime has been mostly thwarted by the Government's use of three psychic siblings, older sister Agatha and twin brothers Dash and Arthur. They were used to predict future crimes for years but when that project no longer seemed to work it was shut down. Years later one of those children Dash now as an adult was tired of all of those horrible vision he had seen over the years and decided to see if he could help stop them. He went to police detective Lara Vega to see if she could solve the latest crimes that he saw.

This turned into an interesting partnership of sort between them but it also may put both of them in danger especially Dash. If someone finds out about Dash, him and his brother and sister could possibly wind up back in another program against their will or something much worse.

I've never seen the Minority Report movie, so I had no prior knowledge as to what this show was about. I had seen the trailers for this show and was curious about it. I'm totally glad I watched this, I can see this show turning into a new favorite.
