I love the Sophie Katz mystery series because it's funny as well as intriguing. Sophie is a mystery writer who somehow always ends up being involved with a real life mystery.

My Review:

I read the individual issues instead of trade and all I can say is I really enjoyed the story of Diana's journey through her odyssey. It was a very good read. I love the last issue and they way everything had been concluded. As much as I love the story and the artwork I am still not a fan of that new uniform. It just wasn't my favorite look for the Amazon Princess.

I don't understand why DC erased this updated Wonder Woman for the new 52 version. Even though she didn't quite know who she was in the beginning of her journey she still felt like Wonder Woman.

Art of the Day: Black Canary

I have always been a fan of Bruce Timm's art and his Black Canary is truly amazing.

The new 52 Birds of Prey's Black Canary has to be my least favorite Dinah Lance I have seen so far. She's dull and boring. The BC in the Birds of Prey books before the reboot was one of favorite. She was a great fighter and hero plus she had a great personality. I love that she wasn't a dark and gloomy character as well as the fact that she was a florist for her day job.

Since the new 52 Dinah just doesn't seem like herself I was wondering if she is another Earth 2 refugee. I just hope it's just new writers who just wanted to change the character instead of another Helena Bertinelli/Helena Wayne bait and switch.

Wish List Wednesday: The Heroes of Olympus: The Demigod Diaries

 

 

I really want to read this. I'm a fan of the Percy Jackson series and I really enjoyed reading those books. I think this will be a fun book to read as well. One of my friends from goodreads.com also recommended this to me.

Review:

I thought the second volume was great, even better than the first. It not only centered on the kind hearted high school student Tohru but on some of the other members of the Souma family such as the adorable Momiji and the mysterious Hatori.

I like the main character Tohru because despite being orphaned she is really a happy, kind and caring person.

Alfred is just amazing in these panels. No one can put anything past Bruce except for Alfred. I love how Bruce is just snoring away in the background.

Review:

I didn't read the trade edition, I read the individual issues. I thought the role of Batgirl was perfect for Stephanie because she was getting a second chance after a few mistakes as the Spoiler. As much as I adore Cass, Steph brought a little bit of fun back to the Batfamily and to Gotham which was surely missing.

Vol 1 gave the readers a chance to see Steph juggling being a college student and being a vigilante. And even though she made mistakes, as Batgirl she showed that she would not give up. I love her inner dialog when she was going up against the Scarecrow, despite the beating and the fear toxin Steph just wouldn't give up. Plus, you get Damian Wayne/Robin being as annoying as possible when he begrudgingly teams up with Steph and Barbara Gordon taking on the role of mentor to the new Batgirl.

Book Review: The Scarlet Letter

Book: The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne

My Review:

I had a hard time sympathizing with the characters of Hester Prynne, Roger Chillingworth and Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale. They wrapped their lives around so many lies resulting in so much suffering for them but of the three I would say that Hester suffered the most. She was scorned and treated with disdain while the Reverend Dimmesdale was treated with greatness among the people even though he was as guilty as she was.

The Reverend suffered inwardly but I'm sure that was nothing compared to what Hester had to endure. If he really believed the words he were preaching he should have stood up and told the truth in the beginning. For Roger Chillingworth, I just don't understand why he would waste his time with trying to seek revenge it didn't do him any good in the end.

The Scarlet Letter continues to stand the test of time because of the suffering that each character endures which in my opinion was self imposed. This book was not my favorite but I can understand why it is considered a classic.

I don't think they gave Steve and Diana a chance in the re-boot. There are a lot of older book with the relationship but I wanted to see a new modern approach to it. I think they're great together.

My Rating:

I really liked this book a lot because it had me guessing tell the very end. Which is what a good mystery book should do, right? It was well written and fun to read. I liked that this was a supernatural mystery but it also quite funny. I love that it wasn't a romance filled book where the main character is more wrapped up in her love life than trying to solve the mystery. Of course there were some love interest but they were not the focus of the story.

I thought Lily was an amazing and likeable character and I also found her little familiar the gargoyle - who transforms himself into a pig when normal humans are around - to be really funny.

I will be reading more from this series, the first book was great.

Three Recent Book Purchases

I just bought three new books: The Weird Sisters, The Night Circus (it was on sale) and The Dark Knight Rises (still have no desire to see the movie but thought I would just read the book).

I feel like there are so many good book out right now.

I thought this scene was cute because it showed Tim being a normal guy hanging out with Tam. I also thought Tim and Tam were really cute together. She's another fun character that disappeared following the re-boot.

Actually, I'd say Tim Drake also disappeared with the re-boot. He's no longer the interesting smart character that he once was.

Review:

Rose Wilson is a very complicated young woman and this book shows how she's tries so hard not to be like her father, Slade. The writing was strong as well as the artwork was great. This is worth reading even if you are not a Ravager fan. Reading this made me miss the pre-reboot teen titans.

Ahsoka Tano is truly one of the best Jedi apprentice on Star Wars The Clone Wars TV show. She's tough yet wise which is a perfect combination for a Jedi. I wonder what will be her fate once the series comes to an end.

My Review:

This book hold true to it's era where people didn't speak their mind or say what they truly wanted. They were constantly worrying about what others thought and acted accordingly. The main character Lucy Honeychurch, like so many young women then and now, we truly just want to find ourselves and to be happy enjoying our lives. The book starts out with her trip to Italy, which would have been much more enjoyable had not her cousin Charlotte been her chaperon. Charlotte was a constant bore and consistently tried to influence Lucy's thoughts with her own.

I really enjoyed the characters Mr. Emerson and his son George because they felt so real and relatable even now. They said what they felt and followed their heart. Which is how I saw Lucy while she was trying to enjoy her vacation in Italy until she would let her cousin's influence change her slightly. George was perfect for Lucy instead of Cecil because I felt like Cecil didn't see who Lucy truly was.

I think this is a good read because it shows how not to live. That is, how not to let others influence you to the point that you are so busying trying to change that you stop enjoying your life. I'm glad Lucy finally followed her heart and ended up with George in the end.

Art Work of the Day: Wonder Woman

I still don't like that Wonder Woman is now the daughter of Zeus. She's just a female Hercules now instead of having her own origin. I don't buy that "fans" couldn't relate to her being made from clay. However, they can understand a baby from Krypton turning into Superman or guy bitten from a radioactive spider turning into Spider-Man.

It was her own story not someone elses. I guess DC Comics forgot they already did that with Cassandra Sandmark (Wonder Girl). I feel like they are trying to give Wonder Girl's story to Wonder Woman. Cassie dated Superboy now Wonder Woman is dating Superman. That is so lame.

I miss the Wonder Woman who was a smart, tough, compassionate leader. If you read Superman/Batman: Supergirl you will see the Wonder Woman that I am talking about. She wasn't some whiny lonely emo-woman who uses anger and rage to fuel her. She was a warrior as well as a Princess.

I really want to read this. It seems really interesting plus it has Red Robin, Robin and Cass Cain (Black Bat).

Review:

I thought this story was absolutely amazing. I just couldn't put it down it had me hooked with the first page. The story started with a guy getting into a very bad car accident resulting in him being badly burned. Once he is recovering at the hospital he meets a strange woman, Marianne who takes an interest in him. Because she believes they have shared past lives but despite his unpleasant mood and the doctors trying to keep her out she continues to visit him. The story progresses from there with Marianne and the nameless guy's present lives becoming entangled.

Marianne was the light to this dark tale. I thought she was a great addition to this book because it contained a lot of dark and terrifying moments especially in the life of the nameless guy. The past life stories that Marianne told were romantic and sad but were needed to prove her point.

In the end, it had you wondering if Marianne's stories were real.

This picture is just so funny because Alfred just doesn't want to fly coach perhaps he's become accustomed to his rich lifestyle. I wish I knew which comic this was from, I would try to go out and find it.

Review:

I thought this book was awful. It's a wonder how they were able to get a hit show (it's one of my favorites) from this horrible book. The writting was flat and boring and poorly written as well as the characters were all one-dimensional. This book was nothing more than superfical fluff.

Ms. Bushnell should be thanking Michael Patrick King for transforming this book into an amazing show. If the TV show was like this book, I don't think I ever would of watched it.

The illustration shows that no matter what Lois takes her job as a reporter seriously and she will not suppress the truth for anything or anyone (including her husband). That's another thing that Clark loves and respects about her.

Currently Reading: The Scarlet Letter

 I enjoy reading some of the classic books. It's interesting to read about how they saw life back then. I find some of the books to be amazing and others I wonder why they are held in such great honor.

This picture is just so cute. Wally obviously ate all of his food and was probably trying to sneak a little of Linda's but somehow they ended up sharing. The expressions on their faces is just perfect.

 

Wally West (Flash) and his wife Linda Park West are another couple of characters that got shelved thanks to the reboot. Wally's Flash was my favorite of the speedsters but I guess you can't have more than one Flash in this new universe.

Book Review: Devil's Food Cake Murder

Book: Devil's Food Cake Murder (Hannah Swensen Mystery book #14) by Joanne Fluke

Hannah Swensen has to admit life is pretty sweet. Things are going well in the romance department and her bakery's delectable confections are selling as fast as she can bake them. Even her good friend Claire is head over heels with her new husband, Reverend Bob Knudson. If only they could find time to take their honeymoon!

When Bob's childhood friend, Matthew Walters, comes to town, it seems like divine intervention. Matthew, like Bob, is a Lutheran minister with a stubborn sweet tooth. Since he's on sabbatical, Matthew is happy to fill in for Bob while he and Claire take that long-awaited honeymoon. It sounds like the perfect plan-until Hannah finds Matthew face-down in a plate full of Devil's Food Cake, a single bullet in his head. It will take some sleuthing to sift out the killer, but Hannah is sure of one thing: even the most half-baked murder plot can be oh so deadly...

Review:

Hannah was once again trying to solve a mystery in her small town of Lake Eden. That is when she's not baking cookies and other desserts for her bakery.

This time the mystery centers around the murder of substituting minister Matthew Walters, who was filling in while the town's regular minister left for his belated honeymoon. This mystery had Hannah as well as her mother and sisters trying to uncover information and track down clues. This resulted in a really funny moment when Hannah's mother donned a costume to go undercover.

As Hannah was trying to solve the mystery, she was also trying to figure out why Norman, one of the guys she dates casually, was acting so strange and if it had anything to do with his ex-fiance (who was introduced in a previous book) who now works with him.

I like that this story had a few twists to keep the reader guessing and ended with a cliffhanger. I love reading these Hannah Swensen mystery books because the characters just seem like everyday normal people. Plus, the books come with recipes (one day I might just try one).

Art of the Day: Batgirl (Stephanie Brown)

I thought the cover for Batgirl #12 was great because it showed that Stephanie might get knocked down but she's never down for the count. Stephanie is another great and fun character that DC Comics decided wasn't useful anymore. Her Batgirl series was really good (I'll include my reviews in later posts) and it showed Steph at her best, upbeat and positive. Something that's surely missing from the New 52.

 

I understand she can't be Batgirl anymore then why not let her go back to being Spoiler, instead of just shelving her. Not to mention she's no longer even considered a robin anymore.

Zatanna's series was one of my favorite. I wish it had not been cancelled for the re-boot.

Volume 2 features the finale issues #7 - 16 and range from humorous to dark. I thought the last few issues were great from the Wingman with her cousin Zachary or the last issue with that evil little witch boy. I would have loved to see how Zatanna was going finally deal with Brother Blood and also how she was going deal when she found out the secret of Detective Dale Colton.
Overall I thought Zatanna was a great read and had great art.

Damian Wayne (Robin) is forever arguing with someone and he seems to really enjoy arguing with Stephanie Brown (Batgirl) the most. He just can't seem to say anything remotely nice to her. Maybe he has a little crush on her and that's the only way he can show it by arguing.

There just something so cool and quirky about these owl bookends. Plus, they're just so cute. I could see other uses for these besides being bookends. You could place one on a desk or a side table as a statue.

I love that Lois will stand up for what's right including telling off anyone (including Jimmy) who talks crap about her husband. Even though she knows Clark can and will stand up for himself, she just will not just stand back and say nothing. That just wouldn't be Lois.

My Review:

I read this book in a day because I just could not put it down. I had to know what was going to happen with JWP, Inc., whether Paris was every going to achieve her dreams and see her company succeed, and if all the people in her life truly had her best interest at heart.

I know that this is Chick-lit but there was a lot of real world experience that you can take away from this such as: trust your gut instinct, never give up on your dream but don't be afraid to make adjustment, learn to think with your head and not just with your heart, and sometimes you have to take off the rose colored glasses to really see a person.

I would truly recommend this book, you will not be disappointed.

Book of Interest: Cemetery Girl by David Bell

 

I had read the description of "Cemetery Girl" at the store. I had thought about buying it but I put it back. I ended up buying two other instead and for now I will just add this to my BOI list.
