Book Review: Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble

Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble (Jolie Wilkins, #1)

Book: Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble (Jolie Wilkins book #1) by H.P. Mallory

Rating: 1 star (Did Not Finish)

My Review:

Turns out the cover was better than the book. I found this too awful to finish. I gave up reading during the seventh chapter where it had a witch named Bella and a warlock named Rand about to go into a magical duel over the protection of the main character Jolie.

Surprisingly, witches and warlocks have to have protectors and they can't just operate on their own or do whatever they want without checking with their protector. Why does this read like organized crime?

The main character Jolie Wilkins is supposedly a powerful witch, something she's been unaware of for all her life that is until Rand Balfour entered her life. Prior to that, her only abilities were being able to see auras and occasionally seeing visions. Jolie owns a psychic/fortune teller business and her best friend Christa is her receptionist.

Rand wanted to hire Jolie for a job but he had to see how powerful she was first so he sent a ghost to  see if she could see it. Rand wanted Jolie to help him figure out who killed the ghost (his name is Jack) when he was alive. Jolie only seemed interested in the job because she found Rand attractive.

So, Jolie, Christa and Rand traveled to Chicago to try to do a sort of seance but Jolie accidentally brought the guy back to life. What annoyed me was the lack of reaction from Jolie and Christa. A ghost was just transformed into a flesh and blood person. So why didn't they freak out or something? Instead all four head out to a night club for drinks where Christa danced all night with the former ghost.

Once, Jolie said her good byes to Rand, she and Christa were back to work at her psychic shop in LA, where all Jolie did was wonder what Rand was doing. That is until Bella came into her store. Jolie could tell she was a witch as well as she seemed dangerous but that didn't stop Jolie from accepting a party invitation from her, all because Bella casually stated that Rand would be attending.

The party scene is where I had to just stop reading. As soon as Jolie entered the costume party she immediately met a vampire who was dressed as a vampire. He started trying to flirt with her. She could tell he was slime yet she was still oh so attracted to him. That is until she spotted Rand, who was dressed as a pirate from the cover of one of those romance novels, he came over to get her away from the vampire. At the party Rand told Jolie the real reason Bella is interested in her. Bella is trying to unite all the supernatural beings: witches, warlocks, werewolves, vampires, etc and since Jolie is new to the magical world she needs a protector.

Not wanting Bella to be Jolie protector, Rand informs Bella that Jolie is now under his protection. As her protector she would have to give up her present life in Los Angeles (since that was Bella's territory) and have to move to where he lives which is England. But instead of Jolie getting angry she starts crying. Seriously, why? Well, I stop reading right when all the magical beings stopped dancing to start watching the duel between Bella and Rand.

I really couldn't take reading any more of this. It was really bad, it made me wonder how this got published. The plot and the characters just didn't have anything going for it. It felt like bad fanfiction. I usually don't read fanfiction but I've come across some that was much better written than this.

Just from what I read, Jolie comes across as timid and a bit of an idiot. She lacks any real self-esteem and constantly puts herself down. She's nearly 30 but still acts immature. It's hard to imagine she's the heroine of this story.

I was so disappointed with this book and I don't think I will be reading the second book, especially if it's anything like the first.

Downton Abbey Marathon Finished

I finally watched all the episodes and I can say that I am now a fan of Downton Abbey. It's a wonderful show. I didn't like Mary during season 1 but by season 3, she had changed a good amount.

It was sad what happened to William, Lavinia, Sybil and Matthew. I never thought I would even like Thomas let alone feel sorry for him but by season 3 he wasn't as much of a jerk as he used to be. But that Ms. O'Brien I can not find any sympathy for her. She didn't change at all. Poor Edith will she ever get a chance to shine.

I can't wait for the fourth season to start.

Wish List Wednesday: Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns

I loved "The Devil Wears Prada" and was really happy when I heard the author had written a sequel. I hope the book is a hit because hopefully it will be turned into a movie then Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt and Anne Hathaway can reprise their roles. That would be really cool.

Book: Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns by Lauren Weisberger

Book Description:

Eight years have passed since Andrea “Andy” Sachs quit the job “a million girls would die for” working for Miranda Priestly at Runway Magazine—a dream that turned out to be a nightmare. Now Andy’s on the top of the world: she’s writing and reporting to her heart’s content; running The Plunge, her wildly successful high fashion bridal magazine with Miranda’s other ex-assistant, Emily; and most importantly, getting married to the scion of a storied media family and the love of her life.

But the night before her wedding, Andy can’t sleep. As happy as she is—as happy as she should be—she’s still haunted by the specter of her former boss. Maybe it’s survivor syndrome? Or maybe it’s justifiable, self-inflicted, paranoia. From the start, Andy and Emily have felt entitled to use their rolodex of contacts—Miranda’s contacts—from Runway as they make their way in the magazine world. As The Plunge succeeds, Andy and Emily realize they’ll soon come face to face with their former tormenter at industry functions, award ceremonies, and even weddings. Still, Andy can hardly anticipate the horrifying reality that’s approaching—a reversal so profound that she will be squarely in Miranda’s crosshairs once more.

Karma’s a bitch. And Andy’s efforts to build a bright new life have led her directly to the one she fled—and into the path of the Devil herself.

Illustration of the Day: Smallville: Bruce Wayne and Barbara Gordon(?)

Illustration: Smallville Season 11 issue #5 (print) or #15 (digital)

In the scenes above, I like how Bruce is the same no matter who writes him. However, everything about this "Barbara Gordon" screams Stephanie Brown. Thanks to DC Comics axing the use of Miss Brown (at the last minute), Bryan Q. Miller had to immediately change Steph to Babs for the Smallville Season 11 comic book.

It would have been nice if Bryan had been given the time to give his Barbara her own personality because this was just Steph with red hair.

Maybe this is just the Smallville tradition of characters turning out to be someone else, perhaps Stephanie Brown probably just changed her name to Barbara Gordon. Well, that's my theory.

On a side note, I do hope if Batman returns for future issues, they design a better costume for him and get rid of that bluish gray face paint. Both are hideous.

Art of the Day: No. #1 Ladies' Detective Agency

Artwork: The Best in Botswana by SailorPtah

I loved the books and thought the TV series was great (too back it didn't return). This artwork is also very good, the artist captured the personalities of both Detective Precious Ramotswe and her assistant Grace Makutsi perfectly.

This is really good.

Downton Abbey Marathon

Since cable is offering marathons of TV shows, I'm going to give Downton Abbey a chance. I have never given it a watch because I didn't seem interested. But I have the whole week to watch as many of the episodes as I can. Who knows it may become one of my favorite shows.

Currently Reading: Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble

Magic and maybe a little romance. How could I not want to read this? Hopefully the cute cover isn't the best part of the book.

Book: Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble (Jolie Wilkins #1) by H.P. Mallory

Book Description:

Life isn't bad for psychic Jolie Wilkins. True, she doesn't have a love life to speak of, but she has a cute house in the suburbs of Los Angeles, a cat and a quirky best friend.

Enter Rand Balfour, a sinfully attractive warlock who insists she's a witch and who just might turn her life upside down. Rand hires her to help him solve a mystery regarding the death of his client who also happens to be a ghost. Jolie not only uncovers the cause of the ghost's demise but, in the process, she brings him back to life!

Word of Jolie’s incredible ability to bring back the dead spreads like wildfire, putting her at the top of the underworld’s most wanted list. Consequently, she finds herself at the center of a custody battle between a villainous witch, a dangerous but oh-so-sexy vampire, and her warlock boss, Rand.

Lois Lane is certainly not a damsel-in-distress. She can take care of herself even if she knows there is a really Super guy out there looking out for her.

Book Review: Birds of Prey Vol #7

Book: Birds of Prey Volume #7: Perfect Pitch by Gail Simone (Trade issues: #86-90 and #92-95)

Rating: 5 stars

My Review:

(I read the single issues #86-95 instead of the trade edition)

I thought this was Absolutely Amazing. It was action packed, non-stop entertainment. I felt like I had read a well written action movie.

In issue #86, Barbara Gordon may have moved her headquarters to Metropolis but that didn't keep the Birds of Prey away from all the Gotham City craziness as well as a little bit of Metropolis craziness. Also, Bruce Timm illustrated the second part of this four part issue.

In issues #87-90, Huntress continued with her plan to take down the Gotham mob (Vol #6) which also had Black Canary teaming up with Green Arrow in Star City to help further Huntress' plan. The ladies also had to deal with finding Savant who had been abducted which leads them into someones mysterious plan to get Oracle's identity. There is also a really great scene between Barbara and her father Commissioner James Gordon.

Issue #91 was a stand alone which had the ladies trying to stop a kidnapping of a potential organ donor.

Issues #92-95 had the Birds on a race to get to the Crime Doctor (Matthew Thorne) before some of his associates find him. This also featured Lady Shiva, one of the most deadly assassins surprisingly helping the Birds of Prey while Black Canary was off training. Lady Shiva and Lady Blackhawk are both totally wicked and quite funny.

All three stories were great. Gail Simone's witty writing and amazing character development makes Birds of Prey one of my favorite comic series. Completely loved this.

Art of the Day: Draco Malfoy with Crabbe and Goyle

I will post my review for Birds of Prey later today. It's really good.

Artwork: A Boy and His Goons by TwiggyMcBones

Draco Malfoy was such a bully and of course every bully needs his own personal goon squad. And they would be Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle. They were the perfect lackeys, doing everything Draco wanted.

Happy Birthday, Wonder Woman!!!

She was created by William Moulton Marston be the champion for women. She was to be seen as an equal to Superman. Happy Birthday Diana, Princess of Themyscira.

"It's unfair to judge yourself by the criterion of age. A vital, intelligent woman is much more than the sum of her birthdays." ~ Wonder Woman

Art of the Day: Gotham City Sirens

Artwork: Gotham City Sirens covers for issues #5-7 by Guillem March

I love these three covers because it shows off how smart, crazy and dangerous these ladies are. Plus, nothing beats Harley Quinn's classic costume. Have you see how horrible she looks in the new 52?

I thought Gotham City Sirens was a great series. You should check it out if you get a chance, either in single issues or trade volumes.

Book Review: Kieli Vol. #1

Book: Kieli Volume #1 by Yukako Kabei (Chapters #1-3)

Rating: 4 stars

My Review:

This started out a little slow but quickly turned into a really good read. I debated on whether to give it 3 1/2 or 4 stars, but I decided on the four because after the slow start it was a rather solid story.

I thought the main characters: Kieli, Harvey and Corporal were fun and a little crazy but quite charming. I rather enjoyed the story because it was interesting and engaging once it got passed the begining which focused on the war that was 80 years ago.

This was about Kieli a girl known as the weird girl at her boarding school who doesn't have any friends except her ghost roommate Becca.

But Kieli's life starts to change when she meets Harvey. One day, while she was at the train station with Becca they came across the body of a young man (Harvey), Kieli thought he was dead until she saw him move. It turns out that Harvey could see Becca which sort of unnerved the ghost girl but intrigued Kieli because she has never met anyone else that could see ghosts.

However, Harvey was in no way looking for any new friends and basically told Kieli that and left. And it probably would have stayed that way if it wasn't for Becca pulling off a crazy plan to see if Harvey was one of the Undying. Her plan nearly caused Kieli her life as well as nearly ending their friendship. However, Becca's plan did cause something good to happen for her along with Kieli meeting two new friends. The first was Harvey (an Undying) and the second was Corporal, a ghost who inhabits a radio. Corporal and Harvey were once soldiers during the war 80 years ago.

The second chapter had Kieli on a holiday break from school traveling with Harvey and Corporal on a train heading to Eastern Easterbury to see a ruin from the war. This was an interesting train trip due to the ghost of a conductor trying to get their attention.

The third chapter the trio were in a small town that was celebrating the holiday with a carnival. When Kieli was out checking out the party, she notices a ghost clown while Harvey met a few old friends. I thought this chapter was little sad but it was very good.

Overall, I really enjoyed this despite the rather slow beginning, the rest of the book was wonderful. I liked how lighthearted and happy Kieli seemed in the second and third chapters once she was no longer at school. She could be herself and not worry about being weird.

There is only one more volume left, which seems really rare especially with so many long running manga series around. This was worth a read and I hope the second volume is just as good or even better.

Book Review: Fullmetal Alchemist Vol. #1 (Manga)

Book: Fullmetal Alchemist Volume #1 by Hiromu Arakawa (Chapters 1-4)

Rating: 4 stars

My Review:

This was much better than I thought it would be. It was really funny but also very well written. It focused on two brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric who are alchemist. In volume #1, Edward and Alphonse were traveling heroes. Whatever town they traveled to they ended up stopping crime and corruption.

In the first two chapters, the two heroes went up against another alchemist who was deceiving the townspeople into believing he was providing them with religious miracles. He was nothing more than a fraud. But there seems to be something sinister working in background because there were two mysterious characters who dealt with the fake preacher after the brothers ruined his scheme. I figure they will probably show up again in future chapters.

Chapter three had the brothers helping a small mining town from the corruption of a military officer. The Lieutenant was over taxing the town and was making it hard for the townspeople to barely earn a living. Edward came up with a plan to help the townspeople. It was quite ingenious and funny.

And the last chapter had the brothers trying to stop hijackers who had taken over a train that they were on. Those two took on at least ten hijackers and all before the train reached its destination.

I'm going to continue with this series, I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was.

Illustration of the Day: Teen Titans

Illustration: Adventure Comics issue #6

I just love this scene (and the artwork) with Conner, Bart, Tim, Cassie and Krypto. It showed how they were all good friends and no matter what they were all going through they would be there for each other. And Conner needed them especially after his ordeal with Lex Luthor in issue #6.

In that issue, Conner was coerced by Lex Luthor into helping gather various items that would be used to help cure his sister Lena. With all the items gathered, Lex went about creating it. Lena was cured until Luthor decided to put her back to how she was, he wasn't going to cure her unless Superman was dead. Conner finally realized that Lex Luthor would never change.

I thought this was a wonderful story, it was simple and had a lot of heart in it and that picture speak volumes. I'll try to remember to add the review for Adventure Comics with the issues that featured Superboy.

Currently Reading: Birds of Prey Vol #7, Kieli Vol #1 and Fullmetal Alchemist Vol #1

I will be reading the single issues #86-95 including #91 which is not included in the trade. The pre-new52 Birds of Prey is one of my favorite series. The characters are smart, funny and totally kick-butt. This is one of the best series.

Book: Birds of Prey Volume #7: Perfect Pitch by Gail Simone (Trade issues: #86-90 and #92-95)

Book Description:

After being paralyzed by the Joker, former Batgirl Barbara Gordon became Oracle and formed a crime-fighting team with other female heroes including the martial artist with a devastating sonic scream, Black Canary, the vigilante known as the Huntress and the mysterious Lady Blackhawk!

In this volume, the Secret Society of Super- Villains takes one of the Birds of Prey hostage and demands their leader's secret identity as ransom. The Birds will have to save their friend and battle the superhuman mercenary known as Deathstroke in order to defend the security of their leader.

This looks interesting doesn't it? Can't wait to start reading it.

Book: Kieli Volume #1 by Yukako Kabei

Book Description:

Kieli sees ghosts. It's an odd ability for a 14-year-old girl, and it makes her a bit of an outcast at her boarding school. Her only friend, in fact, is the (semi-) departed spirit of a girl who used to inhabit her room. That is until the two encounter a young man who appears to share Kieli's "gift." It doesn't take long to discover, though, Harvey is an altogether different sort of creature - one of the infamous Undying, the reanimated corpse of a dead soldier.

Could it be that in this cursed fellow Kieli has finally found a kindred spirit? Throwing in her lot with this strange, soulless man and his possessed radio, she means to find out...

I want to give this a try to see if it's interesting. Perhaps it's better than interesting but actually really good. Well, I'll see.

Book: Fullmetal Alchemist Volume #1 by Hiromu Arakawa

Book Description:

Alchemy: the mystical power to alter the natural world; something between magic, art and science. When two brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric, dabbled in this power to grant their dearest wish, one of them lost an arm and a leg...and the other became nothing but a soul locked into a body of living steel.

Now Edward is an agent of the government, a slave of the military-alchemical complex, using his unique powers to obey orders...even to kill. Except his powers aren't unique. The world has been ravaged by the abuse of alchemy. And in pursuit of the ultimate alchemical treasure, the Philosopher's Stone, their enemies are even more ruthless than they are...

Wish List Wednesday: Red Velvet Cupcake Murder

Even though I still have to read Cinnamon Roll Murder (#15), I want to read this one as well. I really like this series although there is something I would change, Hannah should finally choose between Norman or Mike. She needs to take a chance and actually have a relationship with one of them or just decided to date neither one. That would be nice change for the series.

Book: Red Velvet Cupcake Murder (Hannah Swensen #16) by Joanne Fluke

Book Description:

This summer has been warmer than usual in Lake Eden, Minnesota, and Hannah Swensen is trying to beat the heat both in and out of her bakery kitchen. But she's about to find out the hard way that nothing cools off a hot summer day like cold-blooded murder. . .

It's a hot, muggy evening, and the last thing Hannah wants to do is squeeze into a pair of pantyhose for the Grand Opening of the refurbished Albion Hotel. But with Hannah's famous Red Velvet cupcakes being served in the hotel's new Red Velvet lounge, she can't bring herself to back out.

The party starts off with a bang with the unexpected arrival of Doctor Bev, a Lake Eden legend who left town in shame after she two-timed her fiancé one too many times. Bev's splashy appearance on the arm of a wealthy investor is the talk of the night. But the gossip comes to a screeching halt when a partygoer takes a mysterious dive off the hotel's rooftop garden.

The victim is the sheriff's secretary, Barbara Donnelly, and she is barely clinging to life. The question is, did she fall--or was she pushed? As the police investigate, the only one who isn't preoccupied with the case is Doctor Bev. She's too busy trying to stir things up with her old flame Norman, who's reunited with Hannah.

Just as Hannah's patience with Bev runs dangerously thin, her rival is found dead at the bottom of Miller's Pond. The only clue the police have is the Red Velvet cupcake Bev ate right before she died--and the tranquilizers someone seems to have baked into it. To everyone's shock, Hannah is now the unlikely target of a murder investigation--and she's feeling the heat in a way she never has before. . .

Art of the Day: Wonder Woman

Artwork: Wonder Woman by Lynne Yoshii

Isn't this artwork magnificent? Wonder Woman may be a fierce warrior but she is compassionate and kind. She inspires women to be better. This is the Wonder Woman that I miss. I highly doubt she will be returning anytime soon.

Book Review: The Meanest Doll in the World

Book: The Meanest Doll in the World (Doll People book #2) by Ann M. Martin and Laura Godwin with Illustrations by Brian Selznick

Rating: 4 stars

My Review:

I finished this wonderful little book last night. This was so funny and very smart. I love how the authors gave the reader a doll's view of the world. I also thought the artwork that was throughout the book was great and it also enhanced the story. This was truly a fantastic book.

The story focused on mainly two dolls, Annabelle and Tiffany, who after exploring the attic with Annabelle's aunt ended up hiding away in Kate's backpack to avoid being noticed by Kate (one of the human girls) and then were taken to school.

Once at school they embark on one adventure after another until they climbed into the wrong backpack and end up in another kid's home. This mistake brings them into contact with Princess Mimi or as the other dolls at the house call her Mean Mimi.

I have to say for a children's book, it was exciting and filled with interesting twists and suspense. I wanted to know what Mimi was up to next and how they were going to stop her. She was truly a menace to all the dolls.

After reading this, I am really interesting in reading the other two books in the series.

I guess this is turning into a Tim Drake Tuesday. Isn't it cute how Tim is trying to seduce Tam, James Bond style. It's also pretty funny.

Book Series I Gave Up On: The Secrets of The Immortal Nicholas Flamel

Book Series: The Secrets of The Immortal Nicholas Flamel by Michael Scott

I had read the first two books "The Alchemyst" and "The Magician" but I could not finish the third book "The Sorceress". I gave up on this six book series because it started to feel redundant with the same thing seeming to happen and nothing really changing. I have to admit, I thought the first book was quite good (I gave it 3 stars) and it made me interested in wanting to read the remainder of the series. The second book was good (I gave it 2 1/2 stars) but it started to drag on quit a lot. The third book I would say was the worst, it was extremely slow and boring. I just couldn't continue on with this series.

There was also nothing remotely likeable about a majority of the characters. The characters I did like were Perenelle Flamel, Scathach, Joan of Arc and Comte de Saint-Germain. The author kept having several characters state how untrustworthy Nicholas Flamel was as well as how powerful he was. However, there was never anything shown to prove untrustworthiness, all of his action within those few books showed other wise. But what the books did show was how practically useless Nicholas Flamel was. This was supposed to be a man who has been around for centuries and studied various things about science and magic yet he could hardly do anything. I found that hard to believe.

The twins Sophie and Josh who are supposed to be these powerful twins of myth, have absolutely no personality. There is nothing that makes you want to root for them as they go through all these trials and adventures. They had no character development and they were exactly the same from book one to book three. I found nothing intriguing or likeable about Sophie and Josh.

I would say this series suffered from: too much telling and not enough showing, having way too many characters (who were quite forgettable), poor execution of the plot, an overdose on details and a slow moving pace. The writing style also hindered these books as well. I really thought this series was going to be interesting because it blended history with magic and myth but it turned out to be just another boring tale.

Overall it just felt like a huge letdown.

I'm pretty sure Tim should watch his back, Damian will seek his revenge for sure. This picture is cute.

Sneak Preview of Teen Titans Go! - Video

Although it wasn't my favorite, I am going to miss Young Justice. I'm looking forward to watching Teen Titans Go! it looks rather funny (which was missing from YJ). It will air on April 23rd on the Cartoon Network.

But I will make sure I buy the remainder of Young Justice and Green Lantern on DVD so I will have all the episodes to re-watch.

Illustration of the Day: Lois and Clark

Illustration: Action Comics issue #838 (Up, Up and Away arc)

This story arc was set during the time Clark had lost his powers. I love this scene because Clark has no interest what so ever in monster truck rallies, he only went because Lois loves them. But what I love is the fact that Clark took a book with him. It was kind of him to attend the rally and awesome of Lois to just tell him to leave because he wasn't enjoying it. I think it's cool that Lois loves going to monster truck shows because it shows she doesn't have to be like everyone else, she's just being herself.

I can relate to Clark in these scenes because I'm forever wishing I had taken a book with me, when I start to get bored.

Book Review: Fashionistas

Book: Fashionistas by Lynn Messina

Book Description:

Life at Fashionista magazine can be a real bitch. Especially when you work for one.

Vig Morgan finally worked her way out of the assistant-for-the-bitch-from-hell trenches only to get stuck in a sea of editors. But Vig isn't like the other associate editors at the aggressively hip and overwhelmingly current Fashionista magazine. For one thing, she couldn't care less which star wore which designer to which party. Sure, she's clever and witty - and just as ambitious as the next overqualified underpaid underling, but she would never get drawn into a plot to depose the evil editor-in-chief. Or would she?

Jump with Vig into the choppy waters of scheming, backstabbing, free speech, flirtation and fashion, as the lackeys at the bottom of the masthead band together to take down the queen at the top, with some unexpected - but not necessarily unpleasant - results.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rating: 2 stars

My Review:

I thought Fashionistas was just ok, it had a few cute and funny moments but nothing really spectacular. In fact it was rather boring. The plot focused on Vig and few other co-workers trying to get rid of Jane, the horrible boss. I think this would have been much more interesting and funny if the characters were more likeable and less one-dimensional. The characters had no real distinct personalities that I could see and they were easily interchangeable.

I really do wish this book would have been better, it had the potential but kind of fell flat.

Art of the Day: She-Ra

Artwork: I Am She-RAAAAAA by Kenobii ChrisFaccone

She-Ra the Princess of Power was one tough Princess.

Princess Adora fought along side the rebels to stop Hordak from ruling Etheria but when their fight needed a little more power she transformed into She-Ra. That 80's cartoon was great because Adora only turned into She-Ra when she was truly needed. Adora was pretty tough in her own right.

Currently Reading: The Meanest Doll in the World

I had no idea that this was a sequel in a series, hopefully it's written in an easy to follow way. I love the bright colors on the book cover and the cute illustrations. This seems like a fun interesting book. I am really looking forward to reading this.

Book: The Meanest Doll in the World (Doll People book #2) by Ann M. Martin & Laura Godwin with Illustrations by Brian Selznick

Book Description:

Annabelle Doll and Tiffany Funcraft are two dolls who have been best friends since they met in Kate Palmer's house at 26 Wetherby Lane. In this sequel to The Doll People, they hitch a ride in Kate's backpack and find themselves in the biggest adventure of their lives, a day at school!

But when an attempt to return home lands them in the wrong house, they're in far deeper trouble than they imagined. Along with a host of new doll friends, they also encounter Mean Mimi, the wickedest doll of all. Mean Mimi is mean-really mean-and she's determined to rule all of Dollkind or else destroy it. Will the world ever be safe for dolls again?

In this masterfully plotted sequel, Ann M. Martin and Laura Godwin, with the help of Brian Selznick's ingenious black-and-white illustrations, take the reader on another nonstop adventure from a doll's eye view!

Sunday Summary: March 17th

Happy St. Patrick's Day!!

I really needed that break from reading, it was nice to take a little break. But now it's back to reading, the new book I just started is "The Meanest Doll in the World" by Ann M. Martin and Laura Godwin. It features really amazing illustrations from Brian Selznick. I'll post the description in my Currently Reading post in a few seconds. At first I couldn't decide if I wanted to read "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring", The Meanest Doll or "The Wind in the Willow". Of course I decided to go with the Doll book (since I already mentioned it above) but I do plan to read the other two books sometime later.

Lately, I've been really surprised that I haven't read a bad book in a while. Perhaps I'm getting better at choosing good books or there seems to be more really good books out there. Either way it sucks to read a horrible book.

This morning I watched "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" on ABC Family. If it wasn't for all the deleted or additional scenes I wouldn't bother watching it on TV. There were way too many commercials to sit through. The sixth movie had Harry starting to fall for Ginny but it wasn't very believable unlike Hermione's growing feelings for Ron. Harry and Ginny's romance felt forced and in the book it just felt like it happened out of the blue with Harry all of a sudden starting to like Ginny. Some of the fans even thought Harry's feelings came from the love potion he was smelling. Their romance just didn't feel genuine, well at least to me.

Anyway, that's the only thing that annoyed me about that movie (and the book). It's been some years since I've read the Harry Potter series and I was thinking about going back to reread them. It would be interesting to see if my opinions have changed or stayed the same. Since I have so many other books sitting on my shelves, I'll probably wait to give them a reread.

Well, I'm off to have some lunch (well after I post my Currently Reading post).

I hope everyone has a good day.

All isn't that sweet? Martha just couldn't contain her excitement. She just had to hurry up and give Conner a hug. Now, that's the Superfamily that I miss.

Book Review: Ultra Maniac Vol. #3

Book: Ultra Maniac Volume #3 by Wataru Yoshizumi (chapters 11 - 15)

Rating: 4 1/2 stars

My Review:

This is one of the most adorable book series, it's cute and funny. Nina and her horrible magic, I don't think she's ever had a spell go right. Volume three continued with Ayu and Tetsushi's romance, this time they decided to go on a date. Not feeling like she had anything to wear for her date Ayu lets Nina create some magical clothes for her. If you read this series than you know something would go wrong all thanks to Nina's magic.

But Ayu isn't the only one finding love, Yuta (Nina's childhood friend from the Magical Kingdom) has even found a girlfriend. I find her to be mysterious and what to know what she's hiding, maybe it will be discovered in the next volume. Also, Yuta's older sister shows up at the school, she will be the new math teacher and her magic is just as bad as Nina's.

Love isn't the only thing being discovered. Nina was unknowningly seen when she was outside with her cat Leo, who had transformed from a human back into his cat form. She ended up letting that person in on her magical secret.

Lastly, someone is sending threating letters to Nina, they don't want her there. But who? Hopefully I'll find out in the next volume.

This little series is just so cute. It will have you laughing the whole way through. There are only two volumes left and I hope they are just as good as the first three.

I'm probably not going to read anything until Sunday. I need a reading break.

Book Review: Highschool of the Dead Vol. #2

Highschool of the Dead, Band 2

Book: Highschool of the Dead Volume #2 by Daisuke Sato with illustrations by Shouji Sato  (chapters 4 -7)

Rating: 4 stars

My Review:

First off the bat, this is not a book for kids or anyone who does not like seeing brief nudity, graphic violence, blood and gore. There is a good story here and the characters are interesting. Despite the mood of the book, it's also has some pretty funny moments.

Volume two focused on the group of survivors as they make their way through the city after escaping from the highschool on the school bus (Vol #1). Chapter four takes place right after Rei Miyamoto left the bus and Takashi Komuro went after her. The whole city was in turmoil and people were going crazy and not to mention the undead were nearly everywhere. There really was no place that was safe.

As for the group on the bus, they were not content sitting on the bus (as it sat in traffic) due to one of the members (Koichi Shido) who appointed himself the official leader of the group. Several of the survivors (Saeko Busujima, Saya Takagi, Kohta Hirano and Shizuka Marikawa) left to see if they could find Takashi and Rei. Once they re-grouped with their two missing members, they were able to take shelter in the apartment of one of Shizuka's friends, whom she was house sitting for. Since the friend was a sniper for the police, they found plenty of supplies and weapons.

There was a lot going on, especially with people trying to get away from the walking dead but I like that the group didn't let it harden them too much because they were able to rescue of a little girl and dog that really needed help. In that scene there was a really touching moment when Takashi took the time to place a cloth or sheet over the little girl's father (who was murdered after trying to find shelter for him and his daughter) and laid a little garden flower on top of it. I thought that was a really lovely little scene.

Not everyone will probably like the Highschool of the Dead books for either the story, the artwork, etc but I enjoyed it and plan on reading the remainder of the volumes.

Isn't it Sad what DC Comics is doing to Wonder Woman in the comic, Injustice Gods Among Us?

I really despise giving the comic Injustice Gods Among Us anymore attention since I think it's truly in poor taste. But according to a post on DC Women Kicking Ass, "Hey, at least this makes that slap on the ass look good!", they have decided to push the Superman/Wonder Woman romance for Injustice Gods Among Us. It's bad enough they had Superman kill a pregnant Lois Lane, now they are setting it up for Clark to move on with Diana. So, I guess he doesn't need to grieve for his wife whom he killed by the way.

That's bad enough but take a look a the second panel below, now Wonder Woman's only purpose is for her to be "Whatever he [Superman] needs me to be". Really that's all this proud and respectful Princess, warrior and diplomat is going to do. That's so sad and pathetic. I'm really glad I'm not reading this. This crappy comic is supposedly to get fans ready for the video game. Do you really need this pitiful and disrespectful story to sell video games?

Book Review: Sand Chronicles Volume #1

Book: Sand Chronicles Volume #1 by Hinako Ashihara

Rating: 5 stars

My Review:

This two chapter volume focused on Ann Uekus and how her life changed after her parents divorced. The first chapter was about Ann when she was 12 years old and in the second chapter, Ann was 14. This was a very funny book but also rather sad as well. I thought the Sand Chronicles had really interesting, likeable and relatable characters. Nothing felt stagnant because the characters are growing with each chapter.

The story starts with Ann and her mother moving back to her mother's small hometown to live with her grandparents. Initially, Ann wasn't used to small town life because it seemed like everyone knew everyone, she didn't have any friends and she also had to deal with her cranky grandmother. Ann's luck started to change when she ended up meeting a boy named Daigo and getting a part time job along side Daigo cleaning at a home. While working she met the homeowners children, brother and sister Fuji and Shika, whom she became friends with. However, things were not so good at home concerning Ann's mom. Something tragic happened changing Ann's life.

In the second chapter, two years later Ann and her friends are going away for a summer camping trip where she had to deal with a mean girl and she also delved into a little bit of romance. Going away for camp had Ann trying to sort out her feelings for Daigo and a personal health issue. In this chapter you also got a little backstory on one of Ann's friends, Fuji.

This was such a good story, I'm glad I took a chance and read it. I can't wait to read the second volume. I also thought the artwork was really nice.

Currently Reading: Ultra Maniac vol. #3, Highschool of the Dead vol. #2 and Sand Chronicles vol. #1

I felt like reading some manga and I couldn't pass on reading these three. I have at least read a volume or two of Ultra Maniac and Highschool of the Dead, this will be the first time I will be reading Sand Chronicles. Hopefully it's pretty good.

Book: Ultra Maniac Volume #3 by Wataru Yoshizumi

Book Description:

But being a witch-in-training isn't as easy (or fun) as it seems. In fact, it's sort of a pain in the neck. There are secrets to keep, all kinds of tricky magical stuff to remember and never-ending catastrophes to sidestep. Nina may be sweet, but she's got a lot to learn. Thank goodness one of her schoolteachers is an emigre from the Magic Kingdom. Two witches are better than one, right? Well...maybe not.

Book: Highschool of the Dead Volume #2 by Daisuke Sato

Book Description:

Separated from the rest of the survivors from their high school, Takashi and Rei make their way through town, taking in the full scope of the sudden outbreak that's turned most of the residents into undead terrors. Though the immediate threat of attack has subsided, their survival instinct is still on high alert. Among those untouched by the disease, anarchy is the only law, and when anything goes, Takashi and Rei may have to become monsters themselves if they want to stay alive.

Book: Sand Chronicles Volume #1 by Hinako Ashihara

Book Description:

After her parents get divorced, Ann Uekusa and her mother move from Tokyo to rural Shimane. Accustomed to the anonymity of city living, Ann can't get used to the almost overbearing kindness of the people in her mother's hometown. But when personal tragedy strikes, Ann discovers how much she needs that kindness.

Art of the Day: Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley

Artwork: Snowy Winter by Chidori-aka-Kate

As much as I love the Harry Potter books, I always thought it was rather strange that Harry ended up with Ginny. It felt like he was trying to mimic or imitate his parents. It would have been more interesting if Harry had of ended up with Luna, Cho or some other newly created character (like J.K. Rowling did for Draco) for the 19 years later.

Anyway, I do think this picture is really amazing. I love all the details. Everything looks so beautiful.

Book Review: Blue Beetle Vol. #2: Blue Diamond

Book: Blue Beetle Vol. #2: Blue Diamond

Rating: 5 stars (It was very good)

My Review:

I'm not sure what issues are in the trade volume but I read the single issues #7 - 16 (including #0). I have to say that I really loved reading this. It was a fun, action packed, fast paced and really interesting group of issues. The story lines were really good except for issue #0 it felt like a filler issue. #0 focused on the backstory for Jaime Reyes' scarab, there wasn't really anything spectacular about it.

Issues #7 - 12 had Jaime dealing with the new twists and turns his life has taken once he flew off to New York. He's had nothing but bad luck since he arrived. Not to mention he has one of those annoying TMZ type of websites out to get him and other metahumans. I'm quite tired of the public must fear the metahumans story line. That seems to be the main theme in the New 52, which is getting rather boring. I guess they don't think people should believe in superheroes anymore.

Rant over back to my review. While Jaime was in New York he went up against the Short-Timer, a misguided runaway who was unknowingly tricked into stealing for a mad scientist called Stop Watch. After stopping Short-Timer from stealing, he tracked him back to a shelter for runaways, where he came into contact with Stop Watch (who is the epitome of the quintessential mad scientist).

Jaime also deals with Green Lantern Kyle Rayner and a couple of other lanterns, an intergalactic bounty hunter, the government, Booster Gold and his re-transformed friend Paco (who had turned back into the Blood Beetle (from Vol. #1).

In issues #13 -16, Jaime was out in space all thanks to something that happened in Justice League International Annual #1. Well, since I haven't gotten around to reading that yet (update: I did read it, please click on the link to see the review). I just gleaned from various back scenes shown in issues #13 and #0 that he was transported into space by O.M.A.C. While Jamie was out in space he ended up having to deal with attacks from Reach controlled Blue Beetles and then meeting up with another Blue Beetle who had a plan to incapacitate the Reach, when all he wanted was to try to find a way back home. Jaime thought he had found a way back to Earth from some smuggler but instead found himself being attacked by the guy who previously worn Jaime's scarab and by two goons that work for Lady Stix (who is the equivalent of an alien version of the character Roulette).

The last issue ended on a cliffhanger which is supposed to be concluded in a new comic Threshold that will feature Blue Beetle. However, since I have no interest in reading it (update: I'm actually thinking of picking this up), issue #16 will just be the last for me regarding Blue Beetle.

I really don't understand why this series was canceled, especially with all the fans giving it pretty good reviews.

Anyway, thanks for reading my review. If you read Blue Beetle vol. #2, let me know what you thought about it.

Illustration of the Day: The Kents Part #3

Illustration: The Kents #3 by NISSHIE

I said before that I love the artwork it's just so warm and friendly. The artist stated that English isn't their first language so there a few word issues but that shouldn't take away from the lovely message of the story. I think the Superfamily is pretty amazing, just like this fan comic.

I should have my review for Blue Beetle up soon.

Isn't this cute? I guess Steph's being a little too cheerful for Damian.

A mother's love never really goes away, no matter how old we become. I love how concerned Martha is for Clark even though he can practically deal with anything. I miss the Kents in the new 52.

Book Review: The Miracle at Speedy Motors

Book: The Miracle at Speedy Motors (No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency #9) by Alexander McCall Smith

Rating: 4 1/2 stars

My Review:

I love reading the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency books because of the amazing characters and interesting mysteries. In The Miracle at Speedy Motors, Detective Precious Ramotswe and her assistant Grace Makutsi were working on several cases including trying to help a woman who believed she was adopted to locate any family she may have.

Along side the main story were a few secondary stories: Grace Makutsi and the destruction of a new bed that she and her fiance had ordered, Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni (Detective Ramotswe's husband) trying to find a medical break through for their foster daughter Motheloli who is confined to a wheel chair and someone was sending threatening letters to the ladies at the detective agency.

I found the ninth book to be funny, heartwarming and well written. The character development really drives these books and I love how each character has their own personalities and quirks. I really enjoy reading this series. Although I have not read the books in order I find that they are written in a way to keep new reader informed without slowing down the pace of the book.

It's just something about books that are just so wonderful. With each book you step into a different world. That one of the reasons why I enjoy reading so much.

Video: Batman from Beginning to Retirement and Beyond

This video is really cool especially if you're a Batman fan. It shows Batman's story from the beginning to his some what retirement in Batman Beyond. Be forewarned you'll be sucked in and it's nearly 40 minutes.

Illustration of the Day: The Kents part #1

I'm almost finished with The Miracle at Speedy Motors and should have a review up by today or tomorrow.

Illustration: The Kents #1 by NISSHIE

This four part fan made comic focuses on Conner's return (pre-new 52) after he died during the Infinite Crisis. I feel like there should have been a scene in the comics that showed that, so I guess the artist decided to create their own missing scene.

I love the artwork, it's just so warm and friendly.

Art of the Day: Kakashi and Iruka from Naruto

Artwork: Kakashi Hatake and Iruka Umino by bargiegaara

Two ninjas from the Naruto series: Kakashi (grayish-white hair) he is the leader of Naruto's Team 7 and Iruka although a ninja is mainly a professor at the academy. I think these two are important in Naruto's development as a person and a ninja because let's face it that crazy little ninja boy definitely needs a little help.
