Currently Reading for the Book Girl Read-a-thon: Holly Would Dream

This is the fifth book for my read-a-thon, I think I just might read all seven of these books before I have to take them back to the library. This seems like it will be a cute book.

Book: Holly Would Dream by Karen Quinn

Source: Library

Description:

Holly Ross often wishes she lived in a simpler time, when the clothes were glamorous, the men debonair, and the endings happy. That said, her career as a fashion historian isn't so bad. With both a wedding and a big promotion coming up, her own happily ever after seems assured.

So how, in the space of one day, does it all go wrong? How does she end up homeless, jobless, penniless, and fiancé-less? Why is she cruising the Mediterranean in hot pursuit of real estate tycoon Denis King? And why, for heaven's sake, is she chasing down a suitcase full of stolen Audrey Hepburn gowns?

With the sparkling Mediterranean and the eternal city of Rome as the backdrops, Holly's adventures begin to resemble one of the 1950s Hollywood gems she so adores. Finally she must choose between her long-held fairy tale fantasy and a new, real-life dream with an ending she couldn't possibly imagine.

Illustration of the Day: Tim Drake (Robin)

Illustration: Robin issue #179

This is the Tim Drake that I miss (the new 52 Tim "Drake" is such a poorly written character). You got to love the guy for going to school when he could have stayed at home brooding over his case. No he went anyway and also confronted a drug dealer selling drugs in the boys' bathroom.

Tim was already cool and didn't need the new extreme New 52 make-over to "make" him cool.

Book Review: The Limpopo Academy of Private Detection

Book: The Limpopo Academy of Private Detection (No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency #13) by Alexander McCall Smith

Source: Library

Rating: 4 stars

Review:

I love reading books from this series because the characters are so well written even the ones that are only shown in a small scene.

This time the book featured three mysteries, the first centered around Silvia Potokwane's abrupt dismissal from her post as Matron of the orphanage. The second focused on one of my J.L.B Matekoni's young mechanics being accused of handling stolen goods (car theft). While the third centered around the builder that Grace Makutsi and her husband Phuti Radiphuti had hired to build their home.

I found this book to be very interesting and lovely to read. I love the interaction between the main characters, they seem like real people. This story included the famed author Clovis Anderson. Well, he's famous to Detective Precious Ramotswe and her Associate Detective Grace Makutsi because he wrote the detective book they are always referencing throughout the series. Mr. Anderson made a lovely introduction to this series, I do hope that he returns for a future story.

This is a great series with wonderful characters that continues to be entertaining to read. So far this series has not felt stagnant or stale. And with a long running series, it's easy for an author to just coast along churning out books but not with this series, you can tell the author truly cares about this series. I wonder what the next book will be, I'm already looking forward to reading it.

Currently Reading for the Book Girl read-a-thon: The Limpopo Academy of Private Detection

After reading two disappointing books in a row, I know I'll love this. I have yet to be let down from reading one of the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency books. This is the fourth book in my seven book challenge, I think I can reach my goal before I have return these books back to the library.

Book: The Limpopo Academy of Private Detection (No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency #13) by Alexander McCall Smith

Source: Library

Description:

THE NO. 1 LADIES’ DETECTIVE AGENCY - Book 13

Fans around the world adore the bestselling No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series, the basis of the HBO TV show, and its proprietor Precious Ramotswe, Botswana’s premier lady detective.  In this charming series, Mma  Ramotswe navigates her cases and her personal life with wisdom, and good humor—not to mention help from her loyal assistant, Grace Makutsi, and the occasional cup of tea.

Precious Ramotswe is haunted by a repeated dream: a vision of a tall, strange man who waits for her beneath an acacia tree. Odd as this is, she’s far too busy to worry about it. The best apprentice at Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors is in trouble with the law and stuck with the worst lawyer in Gaborone. Grace Makutsi and Phuti Radiphuti are building the house of their dreams, but their builder is not completely on the up and up. And, most shockingly, Mma Potokwane, defender of Botswana’s weak and downtrodden, has been dismissed from her post as matron at the orphan farm. Can the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency help restore the beloved matron to her rightful position?

As wealthy and powerful influences at the orphan farm become allied against their friend, help arrives from an unexpected visitor: the tall stranger from Mma Ramotswe’s dreams, who turns out to be none other than the estimable Clovis Andersen, author of the No. 1 Ladies’ prized manual, The Principles of Private Detection. Together, Mma Ramotswe, Mma Makutsi, and their teacher-turned-colleague help right this injustice and in the process discover something new about being a good detective.

Art of the Day: Catwoman

Artwork: Catwoman by Stanley "Artgerm" Lau

I'm so tired of DC Comics' lame attempts to garner more sales through shock value. Killing off Catwoman is just another gimmick. This character is way too popular for them to kill off. It's rumored that "Selina Kyle" isn't really Selina Kyle in the new 52. So, most likely this isn't even the real Catwoman that died. And if she is "dead", they will figure out some convoluted story that will bring her back.

Book Review: Dracula The Un-Dead

Book: Dracula The Un-Dead by Dacre Stoker and Ian Holt

Source: Library

Rating: 1 1/2 stars

Review:

I wanted to like this book but it was rather disappointing. It started out good then started to turn into a rather bad soap opera. I was disappointed by the way Dracula was portrayed as a hero instead of a monster. I also couldn't find one character to be likeable or interesting. There was a second vampire in this story, Countess Elizabeth Bathory who wasn't just a monster but also a notorious killer better known as Jack the Ripper. Even Bram Stoker himself was included in this story but he was also very unlikeable, he was portrayed as nothing more than a plagiarist, who wrote the story to try to gain some form of success.

This was a very fast paced book but the story didn't hold up, I started to get bored and couldn't wait to finish this. I like historical fiction but this was over flowing with it, there were too many names and characters that were introduced, that added nothing to this story.

There is nothing about this book that really reflects the original story, and shouldn't be called a sequel. I really thought this book was going to be good but it just fell flat. I'm so glad I check this out from the library, I have saved myself money from not buying this book and the Star Wars: The Clone Wars book. This was even worst than The Clone Wars book.

Illustration of the Day: Lois and Clark (Smallville)

Illustration: Smallville Season 11 issue #1

I think it's great that Clark hears how inspiring Superman has become to people. He's still getting used to being out in the public being a superhero. Of course Lois would get that first exclusive Superman interview when he's ready to tell the rest of his story.

Book of Interest: The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie

I just found this mystery series that I just have to read, I just added the this and the rest of the books to my wish list. This seems like a cute series. I'm going to try to get the first book the next time I buy books.

Book: The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie (Flavia de Luce book #1) by Alan Bradley

Description:

Fans of Louise Fitzhugh's iconic Harriet the Spy will welcome 11-year-old sleuth Flavia de Luce, the heroine of Canadian journalist Bradley's rollicking debut.

In an early 1950s English village, Flavia is preoccupied with retaliating against her lofty older sisters when a rude, redheaded stranger arrives to confront her eccentric father, a philatelic devotee. Equally adept at quoting 18th-century works, listening at keyholes and picking locks, Flavia learns that her father, Colonel de Luce, may be involved in the suicide of his long-ago schoolmaster and the theft of a priceless stamp.

The sudden expiration of the stranger in a cucumber bed, wacky village characters with ties to the schoolmaster, and a sharp inspector with doubts about the colonel and his enterprising young detective daughter mean complications for Flavia and enormous fun for the reader. Tantalizing hints about a gardener with a shady past and the mysterious death of Flavia's adventurous mother promise further intrigues ahead

Spoiler for Justice League of America #4

Here is the spoilers for JLA #4:

Catwoman is the latest member of the Bat Family to die. I really don't get DC Comics, why do they keep killing off popular characters? So I wonder if they will cancel the Catwoman series. It will probably turn out that she's alive but living under an assumed name or it was someone else dressed like Catwoman that was killed instead of Selina.

Art of the Day: Class of the Titans

Artwork: Class of the Titans by eightbreeze

Class of the Titans, is a fun cartoon series that focused on Greek Mythology. These seven modern day heroes try to stop Kronos (or Cronus) as he tries to take over the world. I liked this show I wonder if they will ever make any more new episodes.

Book Girl Thoughts

I'm really surprised that I don't have a book for Wish List Wednesday but there's nothing that I really want to read or add to my wish list.

So far I have really been enjoying Dracula The Un-Dead, the writing style reminds me of The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova (which is also about Dracula and one of my favorite books). I'm a little over a hundred pages in and it's very interesting.

Comic Book Wednesday: 9 Books on my Reading List: Smallville, Batman, Superman and X-Men

I only have nine books on my reading list this time, there's not a lot out this Wednesday that I want to read. But I noticed a lot of the DC books this week have a nice little price increase for their special books.

Description:

Detective John Jones, the Martian Manhunter, steps into the Smallville spotlight in “Effigy,” a stand-alone adventure! A grisly murder in Gotham City sends Martian Manhunter on a quest to confront his past. Guest-starring Batman and Nightwing!
----

I'm glad Martian Manhunter is being focused in this issue and we get to see Batman again.

Also, Bizarro has his worst (best?) day ever, penned by Justin Jordan with art by fan-favorite Riley Rossmo! Plus, from the mind of Jeff Lemire comes Superman vs. Brainiac! Or is it Luthor? Or Zod?? Find out in this month's issue!
----

I have been waiting to read this, totally can't wait to pick this up.

Book: X-Men #1

Because you demanded it! The X-Women finally get their own book, from critically acclaimed superstars Brian Wood (X-MEN, ULTIMATE X-MEN, DMZ, The Massive) and Olivier Coipel (AVX, HOUSE OF M, THOR)! An old enemy shows up at the X-Men’s door, seeking asylum from an ancient evil come back to earth. Meanwhile, Jubilee has come home, and she’s brought with her an orphaned baby who might hold the key to the earth’s survival…or its destruction. Against a backdrop of what seems like an alien invasion and an eons-spanning war between brother and sister, Storm steps up and puts together a team to protect the child and stop a new threat that could destroy all life on earth!
----

I hope this is as good as the hype it's been getting. I'm going to read the first issue to give it a chance. I wonder why the series wasn't called X-Women instead of having another generic X-Men title.

Book: Batman: The Dark Knight Annual #1   $4.99

Description:

In “Once Upon a Midnight Dreary” three of The Dark Knight’s greatest foes unite in to tackle the threat of Batman head-on! Will the diabolical scheming of Scarecrow, Mad Hatter and The Penguin be too much for Batman to handle?

We all know, Rogue will never bring in Gambit. I am really enjoying this series.

Description:

The new Batman of Earth 2 debuts as The Atom begins a mission to lead a new team of heroes—but are any of them prepared for the threat they’re about to face?
-----

Um, I wonder who the new Batman will be? For once DC hasn't leaked any spoilers, my guess is either one of these: Damian Wayne, Dick Grayson, Tim Drake, Jason Todd, Terry McGinnis or some random or newly created character.

Book: Justice League of America #4   $4.99 (price increase)

Currently Reading for the Book Girl read-a-thon: Dracula The Un-Dead

Hopefully, my third book will be much better than the second for my read-a-thon.

Book: Dracula The Undead (The Sequel to the Original Classic) by Dacre Stoker and Ian Holt

Source: Library

Description:

At last—the sequel to Bram Stoker's classic novel Dracula, written by his direct descendant and a Dracula historian

Bram Stoker's Dracula is the prototypical horror novel, an inspiration for the world's seemingly limitless fascination with vampires. Though many have tried to replicate Stoker's horror classic—in books, television shows, and movies—only the 1931 Bela Lugosi film bore the Stoker family's support. Until now.

Dracula The Un-Dead is a bone-chilling sequel based on Bram Stoker's own handwritten notes for characters and plot threads excised from the original edition. Dracula The Un-Dead begins in 1912, twenty-five years after Dracula "crumbled into dust." Van Helsing's protégé, Dr. Jack Seward, is now a disgraced morphine addict obsessed with stamping out evil across Europe. Meanwhile, an unknowing Quincey Harker, the grown son of Jonathan and Mina, leaves law school for the London stage, only to stumble upon the troubled production of "Dracula," directed and produced by Bram Stoker himself.

The play plunges Quincey into the world of his parents' terrible secrets, but before he can confront them he experiences evil in a way he had never imagined. One by one, the band of heroes that defeated Dracula a quarter-century ago is being hunted down. Could it be that Dracula somehow survived their attack and is seeking revenge? Or is there another force at work whose relentless purpose is to destroy anything and anyone associated with Dracula?

Dracula The Un-Dead is deeply researched, rich in character, thrills and scares, and lovingly crafted as both an extension and celebration of one of the most classic popular novels in literature.

Book Review: Star Wars: The Clone Wars

Book: Star Wars: The Clone Wars (The Clone Wars #1) by Karen Traviss

Rating: 2 stars

Review:

You know the old saying "the book is better than the movie", that's usually true. However, in this case, the movie is much better than the book. I was disappointed with this book, the story felt a little dull and it didn't feel that exciting especially with the battle scenes. I was expecting more depth but instead all I read was a rather drawn out boring book.

Another thing I was disappointed with was that so many good parts of the movie were left out of the book, such as the scene in which Senator Amidala went to speak with Ziro the Hutt then stumbled upon Ziro's involvement with the abduction of his nephew. Another amazing scene that was removed was Ahsoka's intense fight against Dooku's MagnaGuards on her way to return Jabba's son to him. Both of those scenes added to the ending and without them it felt rather disjointed.

I felt like the author didn't really understand the characters she was writing about. Most of them felt out of character. The author's voice and characterizations for these characters didn't match up to what we were shown. I find it unbelievable that Asajj Ventress would care that a spy droid she was using had been destroyed. Even R2-D2 was out of character and I find that hard to believe that anyone could mess up R2. I also didn't find Anakin and Ahsoka's characterizations that interesting either. I will admit I did find some of Anakin's internal monologue interesting you got to see some of his turmoil about the war, his feeling about his wife and his slaughter of the Tusken Raiders.

The characterizations that I did like were Chancellor Palpatine and Captain Rex and the soldiers. With the Chancellor you got to read his internal monologue as he gloated over his superiority towards the Jedi. Now with the Captain and the soldiers we got to see how the soldiers were dealing with the war and how they felt in general. It was nice reading more about them.

Something else I found really annoying throughout this book was the constant anti-Jedi/anti-republic sentiment. There was just too much of it. She has written this story as if all the Jedi were evil and corrupt without showing otherwise. She doesn't do a good job of showing a balance between the Republic/Separatist views.

Reading this made me want to rewatch the animated movie again just to wipe this horrible version from my brain. I'm really glad I checked this out from the library instead of buying it, because I would have wanted my money back.

Yesterday, I watched one of my favorite ;Smallville episodes "Siren" from the seventh season, I just love the scenes with Dinah and Ollie. I love how you could see a bit of flirting early on between the two of them. But watching that episode also made me realize how much Smallville messed up their romance by pairing Oliver up with Chloe.

Chloe was so annoying and I didn't like Oliver's character development (or lack there of) when he was with Chloe. They turned him into a love sick useless character during the last three seasons. What happened to the cool character they introduced during the sixth season and that one episode during the seventh? Too bad they didn't focus more on developing the Dinah and Ollie's relationship instead of giving Chloe a boyfriend because she was single.

I hope Dinah makes an appearance in Smallville season 11 comic, too bad Oliver has been removed from the series, seems DC Comics didn't want to confuse fans with too many Oliver Queens. They must think fans are stupid, I highly doubt anyone would be confused with seeing Green Arrow in the new 52, Smallville season 11 and the Arrow TV show.

Fashion Meets Comics: Barbara Gordon from the 60's Batman TV show

I love watching that old Batman TV series because not only is it funny, you also have Barbara Gordon (played by Yvonne Craig) wearing really cute 60's clothes and kicking butt as Batgirl. This Barbara Gordon inspired dress below is so cute it would be perfect for brunch with the girls or for the stylish crime fighter day job as a librarian.

Currently Reading for the Book Girl read-a-thon: Star Wars: The Clone Wars

This is the second book for my read-a-thon. I have the animated movie, bu I had no idea there was a book. This is one of the books I checked out from the library last weekend. As soon as I saw it, I quickly grabbed it off the shelf. I just had to read it.

Book: Star Wars: The Clone Wars (The Clone Wars #1) by Karen Traviss

Source: Library

Description:

Across the galaxy, the Clone Wars are raging. The Separatists, led by Count Dooku, the onetime Jedi and now secret Sith Lord, continue to press forward, and more and more worlds are either falling, or seceding and joining the cause. Under the leadership of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, the Republic heroically battles on, championed by its huge army of cloned soldiers and their Jedi generals.

Anakin Skywalker, believed by some to be the prophesied “Chosen One” destined to bring balance to the Force, is now a Jedi Knight under the tutelage of his Jedi Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi. Death is a constant possibility–and his chances of survival aren’t improved by the unexpected arrival of an apprentice: Ahsoka, a brash, inexperienced fourteen-year-old Padawan apprenticed to Anakin. But there’s no time for Anakin to question his latest orders: He and Obi-Wan have been assigned a new mission, and failure is not an option.

Jabba the Hutt’s precious infant son has been kidnapped, and when the frantic parent applies to the Jedi for help, it falls to Anakin, Obi-Wan, Ahsoka, and their clone troops to track down the evidence and retrieve the missing Huttlet. And more is at stake: For a grateful Jabba just might allow the Republic access to the Hutt-controlled space lanes that the Grand Army desperately needs in order to beat the Separatists into submission.

But the Republic is not the only power that craves access to those space lanes. Count Dooku, determined to win the prize for the Separatists, has set a trap for the Jedi. When they find the Huttlet, they will also find Dooku’s master assassin, Asajj Ventress, and countless legions of battle droids waiting to spring a trap.

The blazing new animated feature film Star Wars: The Clone Wars takes place in the years preceding Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and sets the stage for the groundbreaking TV series. Both contain all original material–direct from the brilliant imagination of legendary Star Wars creator George Lucas. And these exciting new adventures and characters are being brought to life in book form by none other than #1 New York Times bestselling Star Wars author Karen Traviss.

Book Review: The Two Towers

Book: The Two Towers (The Lord of the Rings #2) by J.R.R. Tolkien

Source: Library

Rating: 5 stars

My Review:

The Two Towers was even better than the first book. The first and second halves of the book start right where the first ended. The first half focused on Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas as they attempt to find Merry and Peregrin who were abducted by Orcs. The reader also got Merry and Peregrin's side of the story as well. Through their journey the three meet an old friend who they thought had died before they joined up with another kingdom to take up the fight against Saruman the White.  Unknown to the three, Merry and Peregrin were also on their way to fight against Saruman with the Ents.

The last half of the book focused on Frodo and Sam as they try to find their way to the Mordor to destroy the ring. Their journey didn't so well with them constantly being plagued by Gollum but they turned his annoyance against him, which worked out for them at least for some time.

This was great and it was like you got two amazing stories in one book. I can't wait to read the third book.

CBR Interview with Bryan Q. Miller about Wonder Woman appearing in Smallville Season 11

I can't wait for this Smallville Season 11 arc to start with Wonder Woman. I think Bryan Q. Miller will do a marvelous job with this character.

Here is the interview (it's a very good read):

CBR News: Last summer, the Internet "exploded" when Batman arrived in "Smallville," and now it's Wonder Woman's turn. Was this always the plan, or did the success of the "Detective" storyline lead to this one?

Bryan Q. Miller: I always had Diana in mind for the season, with the specific take I'm executing. It was just a matter of when to place it. The pro of doing Batman is that his origin and backstory are largely consistent over time, and lots of readers already have a shorthand as to who Bruce is and how he works. With Diana, that's a bit more challenging.

Bonus Art of the Day: Strawberry Shortcake

This artwork of Strawberry Shortcake and her cat Custard was inspired by the Strawberry Shortcake Berry Bitty Adventures cartoon on the Hub.

I just love that cartoon it's just so adorable and I love all the characters.

LEGO Batman: The Movie Review

Rating: 5 stars

LEGO Batman: The Movie is based on the LEGO Batman 2 video game.

I never laughed so much watching a superhero movie, this was absolutely wonderful. From the beginning to the rolling credits, this movie is very funny. It's also full of action and has Lex Luthor (voiced by the amazing Clancy Brown) at his best plotting not only to win the Presidential election but teaming up with the Joker to stop Superman and Batman for good. I enjoyed seeing Batman and Robin as a team throughout this movie, it was like watching an episode of Batman: The Animated Series.

There were a lot of characters in this hilarious movie such as: Catwoman, Wonder Woman, Commissioner Gordon, Harley Quinn, Cyborg, The Riddler and more. It was nice seeing a happy Superman again as well as the Justice League helping out.

Another thing I love about this movie was the music, the movie opened with the Batman score by Danny Elfman from the Tim Burton movies (and Batman: The Animated Series). And, whenever Superman would show up the Superman score by John Williams would play. That was a great little nostalgic touch for older fans.

This movie is perfect for everyone to watch, no matter if you're a fan of superheroes or have kids that are.

Art of the Day: Lois and Clark

I just adore the bright and cheerful colors of the yellow and purple which Lois is even wearing. I love how Lois is checking out the view while Clark is checking her out. He just can't take his eye off of her.

Marvel's Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Official Trailer

Why does this show feel like "Torchwood"? When I was watching the trailer I kept wondering when Captain Jack would show up. As excited as I am to see this show, I do wish there was a bit more diversity with the main cast and I don't know if the character that J. August Richards will play, is going to actually be one of the main characters. If this show doesn't get canceled maybe they will add more characters down the line.

Art of the Day: Storm and Cyclops

Artwork: Storm and Cyclops by SeanE

This artwork is really cool, I love all the details. Everything is fantastic. Storm's thigh high boots have a rather useful purpose here.

Storm and Cyclops are my two favorite leaders of the X-Men. And I've also thought that they would make a good couple (I still love Jean and Scott), maybe they could date in an alternate universe since there is like a million different X-Men comics Marvel publishes, they can make it happen in at least one of those comics.
