TV Round Up: Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Rating: 1 star

I finally got around to watching all the episodes of The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and I can honestly say this show is absolutely awful. The best part of this show is Agent Phil Coulson. Too bad he's surrounded by a useless boring and annoying team. Does anyone actually like those characters? They don't add anything to the show.

This show definitely needs to be overhauled. They need to get rid of everyone (besides Agent Coulson) and get him a better (more interesting) team. And the show needs better writing, each episode is just blah. This is S.H.I.E.L.D., they should be bringing viewers bigger and better stories. Think about all the things that this organization knows about and have seen, bring us those stories.

This was one show I couldn't wait to see but now I wish I hadn't. Agent Phil Coulson deserves a better show than this. So for now I think this show should get 1 star but 5 stars go to Clark Gregg for making Agent Phil Coulson the best there is, despite this horrible show.

Halloween Art of the Day

Who doesn't love Halloween? It's fun and creepy. It's a perfect day to dress up, eat all the candy and treats you want and watch all the horror movies you like.

So, to add to the fright, here are a few pics to haunt up your day, Bwahaha!!!

Artwork: The Batman Halloween by miharu-work

Alfred as Sherlock Holmes, Bruce as Dracula and Dick as Zorro. I wonder who will get the most candy.

Artwork: All Hallow's Morn by JRCoffronIII

This is truly creepy, I would definitely try not to visit that house on Halloween.

Artwork: Simpsons Halloween by ChadRocco

I wonder why Lisa isn't having as much fun as the rest of the family? Maybe they already did something to embarrass her.

Artwork: Closet Final by jhuertajr

I doubt anyone would want to go anywhere near that closet.

Artwork: Kim Possible Halloween by hotrod2001

Cute, Ron dressed up at Batman Beyond (Will Friedle is the voice for both characters) and Kim as Jessie from Toy Story with Rufus as Bart Simpson.

Artwork: Insidious by ThatSummersGuy

That's one place I'm sure Ron Weasley (and probably anyone else) wouldn't want to be. Creepy crawly spiders.

Artwork: A Very How To Train Your Dragon Halloween by TsaoShin

Pokémon catcher Hiccup and Toothless as an Umbreon probably competing with the others to see who will snag the most Halloween treats.

Artwork: Haunted Library by LuckyMunky

Even as much as I love books, I might be a bit apprehensive to venture into this library.

Book Club Book Review: Arisa vol. #1

Book: Arisa volume #1 by Natsumi Ando (chapters 1 - 4)

Rating: 5 stars

Review:

Okay, this was really good. There is something strange happening at Arisa's school and her twin sister Tsubasa intends on finding what that is. This was so good, I thought the kids were like the children of the corn. Creepy and weird. This is a really interesting mystery series.

This volume is about twin sisters Tsubasa and Arisa who have been living separately for the past three year ever since their parents divorced. And when the sisters decide to finally meet up, Arisa suggest to Tsubasa that she go to school as her for a day. Tsubasa thinking her sister has the best life ever doesn't realize that there is something dark and dangerous happening at the school. That is until Arisa attempted to kill herself by jumping out of a window.

Determined to figure out what's really going on at the school, Tsubasa continues pretending to be Arisa. She needs to know who's trying to hurt her sister and what the heck is going on. But just like the first day, Tsubasa doesn't notice anything different about the students or the school. Well not at first however during 4th period the students in her class started to act really strange. They all took out their cell phones and started banging on the desk yelling out "King" over and over. She's then instructed to type in a wish to a special site that says it will select one wish to grant. The wish was to get rid of one of the teachers.

After the teacher didn't show up for school the next day, Tsubasa was starting to realize just how weird and creepy Arisa's classmates really are and that they may have had something to do with what's bothering her sister. To try to see if there are any lead to the teacher, Tsubasa and her friend Takeru decide to check out the teacher's home for any clues.

But before she can meet up with Takeru, she's stopped by another student who's asking her questions. The student seems to be scared, she had recently spoken out against the King and those who speak out against the King are punished. Just then some of the students appeared on the stairs taunting the other girl and as Tsubasa was trying to go after those students, she was attacked by someone. Turns out it was one of her classmates, which only brought up more questions.

There is a lot of interesting turns in this. I have to thank my Goodreads group because they have found me a really good book. I can't wait to read the second volume to see what's going to happen because Tsubasa's friend Takeru found out something when he went snooping at one of Tsubasa's classmate's house.

Is Hollywood Running out of Ideas? Two TV Shows Being Rebooted

Hollywood really must be running out of ideas if "Charmed" and "Murder, She Wrote" are getting rebooted. They are really not that old. Instead of Hollywood creating something new and original they decide to rehash TV shows. Why? That just screams how pathetic they are.

The new reboot for Charmed has really made quite a lot of fans mad and besides the fans being disappointed, the actresses from the original series are as well. According to MSN, Alyssa Milano and Rose McGowan will not be supporting this new series. The rebooted Charmed will air on CBS.

As for Murder, She Wrote the remake will star Octavia Spencer and will air on NBC. The original series starred Angela Lansbury as the mystery writer/mystery solver Jessica Fletcher.

As a fan of both shows I really can't see new actresses playing these roles. As of now, I don't plan on watching the new Charmed but I may give the new Murder, She Wrote a chance (well I'm going to at least see if the first episode will be any good).

Book Review: The Night Wanderer

Book: The Night Wanderer by Drew Hayden Taylor with illustration by Mike Wyatt

Source: Borrowed from Publisher/NetGalley for an honest review

Publication: Available now

Rating: 4 stars

Review:

I like this. Even though it wasn't scary it did have it's suspenseful moments. I thought this was really interesting. It was about a North American Indian vampire, Pierre L'Errant who is over 300 years old. He decides to return home to his former land which is now called Canada after all his time in Europe and rents a room from a family on a reservation. The family Pierre is staying with, a grandmother, a father and his teenage daughter are dealing with a lot of issues such as the family is trying to cope with the after effects of the mother leaving the family for another man and moving to Edmonton. The daughter Tiffany is trying to deal with both her romance issues with her jerky boyfriend Tony and trying to deal with her overbearing father. Communication seems to be one of the biggest problems between the father and daughter. Neither seems to know how to communicate with each other which leads them resorting to yelling at each other to get heard.

Despite this story being about a vampire's journey home, it dealt with family dynamics, teenage angst and coming to terms with life (or death in the vampire's case).

This was a nice, quick read that I found be really enjoyable. I also found the backstories, the Indian myths and the artwork (which was in black and white with touches of red as the only color to the story) to add to that perfect blend of creepiness.

The only thing I had a problem with (which wasn't a real problem) is that I wish the story had been longer. I wanted to know what was going to happen with the family but I figure their lives will get better after what happened at the end. This was good I just wish there was more of it. Since this was adapted from a novel, maybe I'll check that out to see if there's even more to the story.

Illustration of the Day (Night): Batman (Dick Grayson) and Alfred Pennyworth

Illustration: Dick Questions The Mantel by ShortPacked

I don't know why they had Dick question why he should be Batman during the Battle for the Cowl because we all knew he would be the one to take over as Batman. Dick was the only one who could carry on the mantel, especially with Jason Todd being way too crazy to be a good choice for the role.

Currently Reading: The Night Wanderer

I wanted to read something a little scary, since this is the week of Halloween.

Book: The Night Wanderer by Drew Hayden Taylor with illustration by Mike Wyatt

Source: Borrowed from Publisher/NetGalley for an honest review

Publication: Available now

Description:

Newcomers to the Otter Lake native reserve don't go unnoticed for long. So it's no surprise that 16-year-old Tiffany's curiosity is piqued when her father rents out her room to a complete stranger.

But little do Tiffany, her father, or even her insightful Granny Ruth suspect the truth about their guest. The mysterious Pierre L'Errant has a dreadful secret. After centuries roaming Europe as a brooding vampire, he has returned home to reclaim his Native roots before facing the rising sun and certain death. Meanwhile, Tiffany is deeply troubled -- she doubts her boyfriend is being faithful, has escalating disputes with her father, and her estranged mother is starting a new life with somebody else.

Fed up and heartsick, Tiffany threatens drastic measures and flees into the bush. There, in the midnight woods, a chilling encounter with L'Errant changes everything as Pierre introduces Tiffany to her proud Native heritage. For Pierre, though, destiny is fixed at sunrise.

In this stunning graphic version of the award-winning novel, artist Mike Wyatt brings a brilliant story to visual life.

Currently Reading: The Son of Neptune

I really want to get caught up on this series, I'm so behind. I still have two more books to go. I just love the mythical world that the author created.

Book: The Son of Neptune (The Heroes of Olympus book #2) by Rick Riordan

Description:

Seven half-bloods shall answer the call,
To storm or fire the world must fall.
An oath to keep with a final breath,
And foes bear arms to the Doors of Death.

Percy is confused. When he awoke from his long sleep, he didn't know much more than his name. His brain fuzz is lingering, even after the wolf Lupa told him he is a demigod and trained him to fight with the pen/sword in his pocket. Somehow Percy manages to make it to a camp for half-bloods, despite the fact that he has to keep killing monsters along the way. But the camp doesn't ring any bells with him. The only thing he can recall from his past is another name: Annabeth

Hazel is supposed to be dead. When she lived before, she didn't do a very good job of it. Sure, she was an obedient daughter, even when her mother was possessed by greed. But that was the problem — when the Voice took over her mother and commanded Hazel to use her "gift" for an evil purpose, Hazel couldn't say no. Now because of her mistake, the future of the world is at risk. Hazel wished she could ride away from it all on the stallion that appears in her dreams.

Frank is a klutz. His grandmother says he is descended from heroes and can be anything he wants to be, but he doesn't see it. He doesn't even know who his father is. He keeps hoping Apollo will claim him, because the only thing he is good at is archery — although not good enough to win camp war games. His bulky physique makes him feel like an ox, especially infront of Hazel, his closest friend at camp. He trusts her completely — enough to share the secret he holds close to his heart.

Beginning at the "other" camp for half-bloods and extending as far as the land beyond the gods, this breathtaking second installment of the Heroes of Olympus series introduces new demigods, revives fearsome monsters, and features other remarkable creatures, all destined to play a part in the Prophesy of Seven.

Illustration of the Day: Green Arrow (Connor Hawke)

Illustration: Green Arrow #106

As the son of Oliver Queen, Connor had taken over as Green Arrow when Ollie was believed to be dead. So far Connor has yet to been seen during the new 52 and continues to be another shelved character.

Book Review: Only the Lonely

Book: Only the Lonely (From the Files of Madison Finn book #1) by Laura Dower

Source: Borrowed from Publisher/NetGalley for an honest review

Publication: Available now

Rating: 3 1/2 stars

Review:

This was a cute story but at times I felt like the main character Madison Finn was making her own life miserable because she over thought almost everything.
The story was set during the summer before Maddie started 7th grade at a new school. And with her two best friends Aimee and Egg (Walter) away at both dance and computer camps respectively, Maddie felt lonely. Maddie’s situation changed a bit when she met a new friend Fiona who just moved into the neighborhood. Everything was going well for Maddie, she wasn’t over thinking everything and she was actually having fun hanging out with her new friend that is until Aimee and Egg returned from camp. Then she was back to being this neurotic person trying to figure out everything.
She was worried that her old friends wouldn’t like her new friend and vice versa. That could have been easily resolved if Maddie had just invited Fiona over to hang out with her and her old friends so they could get to know each other but that didn't happen and this started to turn into a plot point that was stretched out for perhaps too long. Another thing Maddie was worried about was starting a new school, which is understandable. I remember what it was like starting junior high school it was a bit nerve wracking. But once she got used to it, school wasn't too bad.
A third thing that had Maddie a bit stressed was Fiona hanging out with the mean girls, not knowing how to deal with this Maddie started to ignore Fiona instead of telling her what was really going on.

This felt like a true take on life as a 12 year old: stressing about life. I enjoyed reading this and decided to check to see if the second book was available but for now it's only available in digital form. So I'll add it to my wishlist and pick it up later because I want to see if Madison grows and stops over thinking so much.

Art of the Day: Sweeney Todd

Artwork: Sweeney Todd Poster by DrMeacham

All this week I would like to post scary or Halloween related artwork. I thought I would start off with this fan made Sweeney Todd poster for the film. I really like the movie, it's one of my favorites. The acting and the music were great. I love that Tim Burton always puts a unique stamp on his work.

Book Review: The Silver Surfer #10

Book: The Silver Surfer #10 by Stan Lee and John Buscema

Rating: 4 stars

Review:

This begins with Shalla Bal on a ship traveling to Earth. She is being taken by Yarro Gort, so he can prove to her that The Silver Surfer is dead or if he's alive he has since found another love. If it turns that it's one of those two options, then Yarro hopes Shalla will finally let go of Norrin and then choose to fall in love with him. While that's taking place, The Surfer after saving a police officer and a potential suicidal jumper decides to go undercover as a human to see what makes people of Earth so hostile to people or being that are different. Because no matter how much The Surfer tries to help, he's still feared and hated.

On his journey, The Surfer goes to a small town in South America where he is stopped by two tyrannical guards. Before he could defend himself, The Surfer gets some from a young lady, Donna Maria Perez who is tired of her people being treated unfairly by those guards.

After The Surfer knocks out those guys, Donna and her mother aid The Surfer by letting him hide out in their attic. Looking for revenge, the guards capture Donna after she wouldn't tell them where the stranger (The Surfer) was. Not willing to let Donna suffer for helping him, The Surfer goes to rescue her. They get away and to thank him Donna gives him a kiss but that is exactly when Shalla Bal and Yarro Gort show up in the vicinity to view the kiss.

You have to find out in the next issue to see if Shalla will trust in her heart or believe in what she's seeing. I love reading these old Silver Surfer comics because it's such a philosophical book. This was a very good story. I can't wait to read the next issue.

Book Review: Red Robin vol. #4: 7 Days of Death

Book: Red Robin volume #4: 7 Days of Death (issues #18-26 and Teen Titans #92) by Fabian Nicieza with illustrations by Marcus To, inks by Ray McCarthy and color by Guy Major

Rating: 5 stars

Review:

I read the single issues instead of the trade.

These were the last issues of Red Robin before DC Comics rebooted and the series was cancelled. As with the other issues, I thought this was a very good series, the writing was strong and the artwork was great. Tim had grown into his own and had turned into an amazing hero.

This last volume had Red Robin going to Russia to keep tabs on a Russian Lex Luthor wannabe, Viktor Mikalek and ended up running into an old friend, Red Star (Leonid Kovar). All of this resulted in Red Robin, Tam Fox, Lonnie Machin and Russian vigilante Promise getting their minds trapped into the Ünternet.

Red Robin also found himself having to deal with the mercenary Catman who was hired by Mikalek to go after Tim Drake and Tam Fox. Catman wasn't the only problem, the Calculator was involved leaving Tim to seek a little help from the Teen Titans and Robin (Damian Wayne). They found themselves in Europe having to stop the Calculator's deadly robots. This issue of TT was also Damian's last issues as a full time member of the team. The Ünternet continued to keep Tim busy, having him to deal with a team of Technicolor villains.

I'm not sure if issue #22 is included in the trade but it's a cross over story with Batman #22 and Gotham City Sirens #22. As with the other two books, Red Robin along with Batman (Dick Grayson) and Catwoman were being judged by Azrael to see if they were worthy and with Gotham City on the line will the three of them be able to save the city. This was the first story in the cross over and had Tim trying to save the corrupt Gotham City Mayor Hady while trying to figure out his own thoughts about his faith.

The last four issues focused on Tim trying to stop a hit out on Tam's father Lucius Fox. To get to the bottom of it, he made it seem as if Lucius' was dead. This later put a strain on his relationship with Tam since she had no idea her father was still alive. Tim also had to get a little help from Black Bat (Cassandra Cain) when he got himself caught by Promise and her scary crazy sister who wanted to get something special from Red Robin before she killed him. In the last and final issue, Tim had concocted a plan to murder Captain Boomerang, even though he didn't go through with it at the end Batman (Bruce Wayne) was still mad at him for even creating the situation in the first place.

On that last page, I can see how Nicieza was trying to set Tim up to be more independent and separate himself a bit from the Batman family. I remember reading a few interviews where Nicieza had said he wanted Tim to try to go out there on his own and also he was going to have Tim work on trying to repair his broken relationship/friendship with Tam but of course that never got to happened since this series was cancelled.

Something I thought was really cool was Tim's newly renovated home and secret lair. The way he accesses his Red Robin cave is by flipping a switch in the fish tank. That made me think of that scene from Batman Returns where Bruce does something similar.

I thought this was an amazing series and it was sad that it ended. I would have loved to see the next phase in Tim's heroic journey. And with the new 52 Tim "Drake" in the Teen Titans series** being a completely different character, I considered this character as being shelved and maybe one day he will return to the DCU. But for now he's another missing character.

** Soon, I will be posting my reviews for the new 52 Teen Titans of the issues I read before I stopped reading this series. I'm trying to catch up on my comic book reviews.

Currently Reading: Only the Lonely

I'll be starting on this tomorrow. After that read-a-thon, I'm in need of a reading break. This seems like a cute book.

Good thing she has a new laptop, which she uses to write and store all of her thoughts on friendship, her parents’ divorce, and her fear of being called a loser for not liking sushi!

At first, change seems like the worst thing ever, but with the support of her family, friends, and little pug, Phin, Madison realizes she can handle anything that comes her way.

News: Superboy (Conner Kent) to be Killed Off (Again)?

DC Comics is at it again, Superboy (Kon-EL) will be killed off in the upcoming #25th issue of Superboy. He will be replaced by the future son of Lois and Clark, Jon Lane Kent (who was introduced back in issue #19) starting with the 26th issue.

Seriously, Scott Lobdell and DC Comics, you couldn't think of anything else to do besides to kill off Superboy...again. At least when he died the first time it was during the Infinite Crisis now it just another gimmick for sales. I'm really tired of all of these stunts and will not be buying any more issues of Superboy once the "new" superboy takes over. This is ridicules.

Why not just work on writing better stories instead of resorting to these tired old ploy. It's also been reported that Supergirl will be leaving the "Superman family forever". I can't see them getting rid of Supergirl for long.

I really don't understand what's going on over at that company. I hope this turns out to be just a bad joke on Lobdell's part but with the way DC Comics is heading it'll probably turn out to be true.

Book 10 Review for my Library Read-a-thon: The Star Wars Trilogy

Book: The Star Wars Trilogy (Episodes IV, V & VI) by George Lucas, Donald F. Glut and James Kahn

Rating: 5 stars

Review:

Reading this was like watching the movies but with additional scenes. This was awesome!! The book included the first three original stories of the Star Wars saga: A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

I loved reading this book because these stories were a fun and quick read. I enjoyed going on Luke Skywalker's journey from farm boy to hero, Princess Leia Organa's dignified yet fierce fight for freedom, Han Solo's change from a selfish scoundrel to being a member of the team and Lando Calrissian went from being another scoundrel to becoming a respected member of the rebels. Not to mention Chewbacca, C-3PO, R2-D2 and the Ewoks as key members of the team.

I thought this was simply amazing. These action packed stories had me rooting for them as they battled the Empire. Although there were a few differences from the stories to the movies, they were minor such as Yoda being described as blue. But something I found interesting was the version of A New Hope I was reading, was the original story published in 1977 which was an earlier version of the script and was written by George Lucas. The other two stories were written each by Mr. Glut and Mr. Kahn based on stories by Mr. Lucas.

This is a pretty good collection of stories. I enjoyed it so much that I would like to buy a copy of this for my own library. I could see re-reading these stories again in the near future.

It's not too late for me to post my Comic Book Wednesday list. I've come to realize something that probably only comic book readers would understand. I have no idea why I keep buying the new 52 Catwoman, that series is horrible but for some reason I still end up picking it up. I keep hoping it will get better but each issue is a disappointment.

Anyway, here's my list:

Comic Book News: Is Beware The Batman Getting Cancelled?

Is Beware The Batman the next show to be cancelled on Cartoon Network? So far, DC Nation doesn't seem to be doing very well. Last year they cancelled Green Lantern and Young Justice animated series and it sort of looks like Beware The Batman might be heading that way. There was supposed to be a new episode scheduled for this weekend but now the show has been pulled from the line up with Teen Titans Go! instead being aired. Supposedly the show isn't doomed just yet it's just been put on hiatus until January 2014.

After the cancellation of Green Lantern and Young Justice, some fans didn't quite take to the news that Teen Titans Go! and Beware The Batman would be taking over the former shows on air times and have avoided watching both shows. I was actually quite excited for the new shows and gave them both a chance. I absolutely adore Teen Titans Go! that show is just so funny. However, I found Beware The Batman to be really dull and boring. So, if Beware The Batman does end up being cancelled I can't say that I will be sad to see it go.

There's also rumors that DC is working on a new 52 inspired Justice League cartoon series for DC Nation but for now that just seems to be floating rumors. Until more information has been released, I won't take it seriously.

Library Read-a-thon, book 10: The Star Wars Trilogy

This is my last book for my library read-a-thon. I love Star Wars, those movies were great and all the characters. I can't wait to read this.

Book: The Star Wars Trilogy (Episodes IV, V & VI) by George Lucas, Donald F. Glut and James Kahn

Description:

Twenty-five years after the phenomenon was born, Star Wars remains one of the greatest fantasy sagas ever told. Here is the original, complete Star Wars trilogy, featuring the novels of all three classic films, Star Wars: A New Hope, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Read these stories and rediscover the wonder of the epic that begins:

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. . . .

Luke Skywalker lived and worked on his uncle's farm on the remote planet of Tatooine. But he yearned for adventures out among the stars -- exotic travels that would take him beyond the farthest reaches of the universe to distant, alien worlds. But when Luke intercepted a cryptic message from a beautiful, captive Princess, he would be catapulted into the adventure of a lifetime.

Luke Skywalker, the proud Princess Leia, and headstrong Han Solo . . . merciless Darth Vader, wise Obi-Wan Kenobi, loyal droids R2-D2 and C-3PO, and the inscrutable Yoda . . . Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Character Names I Love or Top Ten Unusual Character Names

I had a hard time keeping this to 10 names. Because there are just so many interesting and amazing character names out there. Putting this list together was fun. Maybe I'll post another list of some more of my favorite characters names at another time.

So, here is my list (which is in no particular order):

1. Hermione Granger (Harry Potter)

2. Precious Ramotswe (The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency)

3. Sherlock Holmes

4. Rachel Elizabeth Dare (Percy Jackson)

5. Bast (Kane Chronicles)

6. Bilbo Baggins (The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit)

7. Matilda Wormwood (Matilda)

Book 9 Review for my Library Read-a-thon: Breakfast at Tiffany's

Book: Breakfast at Tiffany's: A Short Novel and Three Stories by Truman Capote

Rating: 1 star

Review:

This was such a disappointing read. I am so glad I saw the movie first because I like the movie version of Holly Golightly so much better. Although she was a bit flighty and her career was questionable (was she a kept woman or not?), Holly was fun and lovely and had a zest for life unlike in the book, she was callous and mean and simply a horrible person. I don't know who wrote the screen play for the movie but I thank them for transforming Holly into such a charming and wonderful character.

This was just a dark and dreary pretentious story that was sprinkled with racism. The story was very boring and didn't really have any plot. This has been touted as a love story however that doesn't seem to be the case. I found none of the characters to be really that likeable, the only one I could muster some interest for is the narrator. It makes me wonder what he could have found so interesting in Holly because she was an awful person. I'm not sure if the cat was supposed to be considered a character but I found him to be more interesting than Holly. I would rather know more about his story than hers.

There were some things I like such as the writing was good and some of the descriptions however all the awful things just drowned it out.

After reading this, I had absolutely no desire to read the remainders of the short stories. I was finished with this.
