Art of the Day: Nightwing

Artwork: Nightwing #153 cover by Don Kramer with ink by Jay Leisten and color by Hi-Fi Design

Book of Interest: Forest of a Thousand Lanterns

I love finding stories such as Forest of a Thousand Lanterns that have a creative and imaginative take on fairy tales. This seems like an interesting story with a young woman being tempted to following an evil path. I wonder if she will follow through or forge her own path.

I'd really like to read this, so this will be yet another book I will be adding to my list. Why are there so many cool and interesting book out there?

Book: Forest of a Thousand Lanterns (Rise of the Empress book #1) by Julie C. Dao

Description:

An East Asian fantasy reimagining of The Evil Queen legend about one peasant girl's quest to become Empress—and the darkness she must unleash to achieve her destiny.

Eighteen-year-old Xifeng is beautiful. The stars say she is destined for greatness, that she is meant to be Empress of Feng Lu. But only if she embraces the darkness within her.

Growing up as a peasant in a forgotten village on the edge of the map, Xifeng longs to fulfill the destiny promised to her by her cruel aunt, the witch Guma, who has read the cards and seen glimmers of Xifeng's majestic future. But is the price of the throne too high? Because in order to achieve greatness, she must spurn the young man who loves her and exploit the callous magic that runs through her veins--sorcery fueled by eating the hearts of the recently killed. For the god who has sent her on this journey will not be satisfied until his power is absolute.

Set in an East Asian-inspired fantasy world filled with both breathtaking pain and beauty, Forest of a Thousand Lanterns possesses all the hallmarks of masterful fantasy: dazzling magic, heartbreaking romance, and a world that hangs in the balance. Fans of Heartless, Stealing Snow, and Red Queen will devour this stunning debut.

Hello comic book fans, it’s Wednesday and that means there are new comics to read. What books are on your list?

Mine is a little light this week with only three books: Batman/Superman, Wonder Woman and Black Widow.

Batwoman Season 2 Promo Pictures

Yesterday, The CW released two new Batwoman season two promo pictures of actress Javicia Leslie as Ryan Wilder a.k.a. the new Batwoman. I'm super happy to see these pictures because I've been wondering what her Batsuit would look like. I think the suit looks amazing, I'm glad they kept the Batwoman signature black and red colors instead of trying to create something new.

I can't wait for the second season of Batwoman, I really hope it'll be good.

Fashion Meets Comics and Fandom: Five Favorite Coats

I'm all about the warm summer weather and clothes but once it starts to cool down and become chilly, I'm totally focused on fall and winter clothes especially coats. I love looking at all the different styles and colors. I'm always getting inspired by looks and I also can't help noticing when a character is wearing a really nice coat as well. So, I decided to focus on some of my favorites. Since there are so many characters with great coats I narrowed this post down to five, however, I will create a few more Favorite Coats post for all the other characters. But for now here are some of my favorite coats.

Double Breasted Trench Coat

Billy Johnson (Run)

I haven't finished watching Run yet so I'm not quite sure what the real reason is for Billy Johnson running away from his life and withdrawing all of his money from the bank. However, in the few episodes I've watched he does have this really nice trench coat. Usually this coat style can be rather structured, but I like that he kept it more casual and that he paired it with a striped hoodie.

Mythology Mondays: Empire of Wild

I don't know anything about Native American or First Nation mythology which is what Empire of Wild is based on. However, I do want to learn more about it and I'm going to see if I can find a nonfiction book so I can know more about it.

I think this book seems really interesting and I wonder how the mythology will play into the story. Because from the description it seems like Joan husband Victor is dealing with a strange case of amnesia after he had gone missing. I really want to know how this story is going to unfold.

Book: Empire of Wild by Cherie Dimaline

Description:

A bold and brilliant new indigenous voice in contemporary literature makes her American debut with this kinetic, imaginative, and sensuous fable inspired by the traditional Canadian Métis legend of the Rogarou—a werewolf-like creature that haunts the roads and woods of native people’s communities.

Joan has been searching for her missing husband, Victor, for nearly a year—ever since that terrible night they’d had their first serious argument hours before he mysteriously vanished. Her Métis family has lived in their tightly knit rural community for generations, but no one keeps the old ways . . . until they have to. That moment has arrived for Joan.

One morning, grieving and severely hungover, Joan hears a shocking sound coming from inside a revival tent in a gritty Walmart parking lot. It is the unmistakable voice of Victor. Drawn inside, she sees him. He has the same face, the same eyes, the same hands, though his hair is much shorter and he's wearing a suit. But he doesn't seem to recognize Joan at all. He insists his name is Eugene Wolff, and that he is a reverend whose mission is to spread the word of Jesus and grow His flock. Yet Joan suspects there is something dark and terrifying within this charismatic preacher who professes to be a man of God . . . something old and very dangerous.

Joan turns to Ajean, an elderly foul-mouthed card shark who is one of the few among her community steeped in the traditions of her people and knowledgeable about their ancient enemies. With the help of the old Métis and her peculiar Johnny-Cash-loving, twelve-year-old nephew Zeus, Joan must find a way to uncover the truth and remind Reverend Wolff who he really is . . . if he really is. Her life, and those of everyone she loves, depends upon it.

Book of Interest: Midwinter Murder

It may not be winter just yet but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy some winter tales or mysteries in the case of this book. I can imagine being curled up on the sofa in really warm blanket reading this collection of short stories. I just love reading mysteries and trying to solve them, I'm going to have to add this to my list.

Book: Midwinter Murder: Fireside Tales from the Queen of Mystery by Agatha Christie

Description:

Lazy Sunday: Watch a Funny Movie

Sunday is a great day to relax and unwind which is why I think you should make an effort to take time out to enjoy the day. It's also a great way to beat the pre-workweek blues and to alleviate any stress and anxiety that you might have for starting a new week.

When I started writing my Lazy Sunday post, I wanted to give tips or suggestions as a way to help everyone enjoy the day. So, for this Sunday why not watch a funny movie or a couple of episodes of your favorite funny TV series. The point is for you to laugh because it releases endorphins which will reduce your stress levels and make you feel happy and relaxed.

What are your go to funny movies and shows?

Weekend Film: Over the Moon

I know there a few channels that have already begun premiering new Christmas movies. For me, it's way too soon to start celebrating Christmas which is why I'm not going to focus on any of the movies until after Thanksgiving. After that, it's full steam ahead.

The film to see this weekend in Over the Moon, it's a new animated movie on Netflix. From the trailer it looks like an interesting story about a girl trying to go to the moon to prove there's a Goddess. I love all the bright colors and the story just seems like it's full of wonder and adventure. This really seems like a cute movie, I can't wait to watch it.

Over the Moon                         Netflix

Directors: Glen Keane and John Kahrs

Fashion Meets Fandom: Princess Leia Denim Jacket

I like this Prince Leia denim jacket it's so cute. This feels like the perfect denim jacket, it's geeky and all the Star Wars patches gives it a really cool hippie vibe. I think this would look cute with nearly any outfit but if you want a more Leia inspired look pair it with a flowy white dress it give you different take on her outfit from A New Hope.

Happy Birthday, Carrie Fisher!

Today would have been Carrie Fisher's 64th birthday and I just wanted to post something to honor the late writer, actor and advocate who continues to mean so much to me and so many other fans. I'm posting these two videos, the first I posted before back in 2017 which is why I included the second one. It features wonderful speeches by George Lucas, Kathleen Kennedy and her daughter Billie Lourd as well as a Star Wars musical tribute to Carrie Fisher performed by John Williams with the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra.

Stay afraid, but do it anyway. What's important is the action. You don't have to wait to be confident. Just do it and eventually the confidence will follow.

~ Carrie Fisher

Teaser Trailer for Raya and the Last Dragon

Earlier today, Disney released the trailer for Raya and the Last Dragon and I think it looks so good. I was already eager to see this movie when it was first announced but this trailer just totally upped my interest even more.

I haven't been this excited to see a Disney animated movie in a LONG time. From the characters to the setting, this looks absolutely amazing. Raya and the Last Dragon is scheduled to be in theatres sometime in March 2021 but with the pandemic still out of control in the US, who knows if by then everything will be more under control. Otherwise, the release date will probably be pushed back.

I’ve never felt that fear is my enemy. Fear is my friend. It offers me a chance to stay alert, keep growing, continue creating something new. If you don’t take that sort of risk, you learn nothing.

Happy Wonder Woman Day!

As a huge Wonder Woman fan, it doesn't matter when or how you became a fan, the character has always been an inspiration and icon for so many. To celebrate the day, you should revisit some of your favorite stories, be it on the page or on screen. And if you get the chance maybe check out some new adventures featuring the legendary Amazon Princess!

Happy Wonder Woman Day!

Fashion Meets Star Style: Chloë Grace Moretz

Due to the pandemic a lot of us are working and going to school at home. Being at home has made dressing really easy because I've been wearing more sweats and lounge wear more than anything else. But I want to get back to wearing cute and non-lounge/sweat clothes again. Yet I still want to be comfortable.

Which is why I love this outfit that actress Chloë Grace Moretz wore a few years ago. I know she's wearing a sweatshirt but pairing it with a mini skirt totally kick it up a notch style wise. This look is so cute and casual yet still looks ultra-comfy.

This is a simple look to put together with a cozy sweatshirt paired with a cute skirt. Since Chloë's sweatshirt has a sheer panel, I picked this Buffy the Vampire Slayer black sweatshirt because I wanted something that was unexpected yet still pretty cool. I paired it with a faded red skirt for a pop of color.

Mythology Mondays: From Darkness

I believe From Darkness is inspired by Charon, the ferryman of the dead from Greek Mythology. Well, that's what the description reminds me of when I read it. This is a must read book for me, I have to add it to my wish list.

Is there a mythology book that you're really interested in reading?

Book: From Darkness by Kate Hazell Hall

Publication Date: November 3, 2020

Description:

Sixteen-year-old Ari Wyndham lost her best friend in the sea. Everybody told her it was an accident, but Ari can’t forgive herself. Book of Interest: This is All Your Fault

There comes a time when you have to ask yourself what are you willing to fight for. And the characters in this book are trying to save the bookstore they work at.

We all know that independent bookstore have competition from a certain online store but for the most part bookstores have continued to thrive. But that's not always the case which is why I want to read This is All Your Fault because besides trying to save the bookstore, there seems like a lot of other interesting things happening in this story.

Book: This is All Your Fault by Aminah Mae Safi

Description:

Set over the course of one day, Aminah Mae Safi's This Is All Your Fault is a smart and voice-driven YA novel that follows three young women determined to save their indie bookstore.

Rinn Olivera is finally going to tell her longtime crush AJ that she’s in love with him.

Daniella Korres writes poetry for her own account, but nobody knows it’s her.

Imogen Azar is just trying to make it through the day.

When Rinn, Daniella, and Imogen clock into work at Wild Nights Bookstore on the first day of summer, they’re expecting the hours to drift by the way they always do. Instead, they have to deal with the news that the bookstore is closing. Before the day is out, there’ll be shaved heads, a diva author, and a very large shipment of Air Jordans to contend with.

And it will take all three of them working together if they have any chance to save Wild Nights Bookstore.

Book of Interest: Jackpot

I need to read Jacpot, the description reads like a young adult romantic mystery as the duo tries to find a lottery winner. I do wonder what are the chances of them actually finding the person, I'm sure the odds of Rico and Zane connecting first is probably higher.

Book: Jackpot by Nic Stone

From the author of the New York Times bestseller Dear Martin—which Angie Thomas, the bestselling author of The Hate U Give, called "a must read"—comes a pitch-perfect romance that examines class, privilege, and how a stroke of good luck can change an entire life.

Meet Rico: high school senior and afternoon-shift cashier at the Gas 'n' Go, who after school and work races home to take care of her younger brother. Every. Single. Day. When Rico sells a jackpot-winning lotto ticket, she thinks maybe her luck will finally change, but only if she—with some assistance from her popular and wildly rich classmate Zan—can find the ticket holder who hasn't claimed the prize. But what happens when have and have-nots collide? Will this investigative duo unite...or divide?

Nic Stone, the New York Times bestselling author of Dear Martin and Odd One Out, creates two unforgettable characters in one hard-hitting story about class, money—both too little and too much—and how you make your own luck in the world.

What are your favorite fun or light-hearted Supernatural TV Shows?

I love watching supernatural TV shows, the scarier the better but sometimes I want to watch something that's funny and more light-hearted. From ghouls to witches, these are seven of my favorite fun filled supernatural shows:

1. Bewitched

This is the ultimate comedy magical series. It's about Samantha Stephens, a witch, trying to balance living a normal life with her non-magical husband Darrin while continuing to use her powers.

Mythology Mondays: We Hunt the Flame

How's everyone's Monday going so far? I hope you're not feeling like a certain orange cat who hates Mondays. But if your day isn't going well, I do hope it will get better.

As for Mythology Monday, here's today's pick We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal which is inspired by Arabian mythology. I don't know very much about Arabian mythology but I would like to and this story seems really interesting.

Book: We Hunt the Flame (Sands of Arawiya book #1) by Hafsah Faizal

Description:

Set in a richly detailed world inspired by ancient Arabia, We Hunt the Flame is a gripping debut of discovery, conquering fear, and taking identity into your own hands.

People lived because she killed.
People died because he lived.

Zafira is the Hunter, disguising herself as a man when she braves the cursed forest of the Arz to feed her people. Nasir is the Prince of Death, assassinating those foolish enough to defy his autocratic father, the king. If Zafira was exposed as a girl, all of her achievements would be rejected; if Nasir displayed his compassion, his father would punish him in the most brutal of ways.

Both are legends in the kingdom of Arawiya—but neither wants to be.

War is brewing, and the Arz sweeps closer with each passing day, engulfing the land in shadow. When Zafira embarks on a quest to uncover a lost artifact that can restore magic to her suffering world and stop the Arz, Nasir is sent by the king on a similar mission: retrieve the artifact and kill the Hunter. But an ancient evil stirs as their journey unfolds—and the prize they seek may pose a threat greater than either can imagine.

Weekend Film: My Best Friend's Bouquet (Hallmark)

Looking for a little Fall romance, Hallmark Channel is premiering My Best Friend's Bouquet tonight. It seems like a cute and romantic movie where two best friends may possibly fall in love. I guess I'll have to tune-in to see how it will happen. I'm sure there will be a misunderstanding in there somewhere, it's a standard trope in these Hallmark movies.

My Best Friend's Bouquet                                             9:00 PM EST                                                         Hallmark Channel

Starring: Chaley Rose, Nathan Witte, Rebecca Olson, Jaime M. Callica, Thomas Cadrot, Luisa D'Oliveira, Casey Manderson and more

Director: Jessica Harmon

Description:

A hopeless romantic misses all of the signs of true love when she puts her trust in a bouquet tossed at a wedding.

On My List: October 10th

Happy Saturday!

I just love the weekend! Who doesn't? It's two days to relax and do absolutely nothing. Okay, maybe not doing absolutely nothing (i.e. errands, chores, etc.) but that's the general feeling. On My List for this weekend are a few books and a TV show that's really caught my attention.

Books I Want to Read:

There are three middle grade books that I would love to read, one is a mystery, the second is supernatural and the third is a sci-fi mystery. I can't believe I forgot about this Lois Lane graphic novel, I had planned to get it when it was released. However, I totally forgot but I will be getting it and the other two books because they all seem like a good read and one even seems a little creepy.

Book: Lois Lane and the Friendship Challenge by Grace Ellis with illustrations by Brittney L. Williams

Description:

From New York Times bestselling author Grace Ellis and artist Brittney Williams comes a new story about 13-year-old Lois Lane as she navigates the confusing worlds of social media and friendship.

It's the first day of summer break in the sleepy town of Liberty View, and young Lois Lane bursts onto the scene with what she knows is a sure-to-go-viral video channel. Okay, maybe her platform only receives two views a week (thanks, Mom), and maybe her best friend, Kristen, isn't quite as enthusiastic about social media, but when Lois sets her mind on something, there's no turning back.

At the end of the week, the big neighborhood barbecue and bike race will be the perfect backdrop to Lois and Kristen's #friendshipchallenge video. But when the girls find out the annual fireworks are missing, Lois doubles down on her efforts for fame, testing her friendship in ways she couldn't imagine.

With Kristen leaving for sleepaway camp after the barbeque and a new girl on the block taking all of Kristen's attention, will Lois be able to find the missing fireworks, celebrate the summer, and post the best #friendshipchallenge the internet has ever seen? Or will she have to face her challenges IRL?

Weekend Film: Ben 10 Versus the Universe: The Movie

I finished watching all four seasons of the Ben 10 reboot just in time for the new movie Ben 10 Versus the Universe that's premiering today. The new Ben 10 is pretty cool. I was surprised that Kevin Levin has an Omnitrix in this version instead of just using his alien/mutant powers of absorption but I guess this is just another new take on the character.

I'm interested in seeing what's going to happen in this movie and how Ben, Gwen and Grandpa Max will of course save the day. If you miss the premiere this morning it will re-air tonight.

Ben 10 Versus the Universe: The Movie                             10:00 AM EST and 6:00 PM EST                             Cartoon Network

Starring: Tara Strong, Montse Hernandez, David Kaye, Greg Cipes, John DiMaggio, Dee Bradley Baker, Todd Haberkorn, Josh Keaton, Tom Kenny, Yuri Lowenthal, Daryl Sabara, Roger Craig Smith and Travis Willingham

Directors: Henrique Jardim and John McIntyre

Description:

A blast from Ben's past returns to do double the damage on Team Tennyson and planet Earth itself, forcing Ben to go interstellar to save the day.

Video: Natalie Portman talking about her book "Natalie Portman's Fables"

I love that Natalie Portman, a fellow bookworm, rewrote three of the classic fables which are wonderfully illustrated by Janna Mattia. This is an interesting video and I love when she she was talking about how when she was younger, she loved the books, The Babysitter's Club by Anne M. Martin and really wanted to talk to the author about adding a new character to the series.

If that's not a total bookworm move right there, I don't know what is. After you've watched the video, I posted the description for the book below.

What are five books that have been sitting on your bookcase or shelves that you haven't read yet? But you really want to, however for whatever reason you just haven't gotten around to reading. It's been a while since I've posted one of these and I'm feeling a little rusty trying to get back into writing about new comics. Well, what new books are you getting? I don't have a lot on my list just four books. From a Halloween Archie comic to Thor, they're books I can't wait to read.

The Witcher Season 2 Promo Pictures

Netflix released new images of Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia. I love the new armor, it looks amazing and so does the new wig. The wig he wore in the first season wasn't bad but this one looks so much better. These are great images, I do hope there will be promos for Yennefer, I would like to see what new outfit she'll have as well.

I was really surprised by how much I liked Henry Cavill's acting in this show. I will admit that I didn't enjoy his performance in Man of Steel. But I think the director and writer should get most of the blame because of the vision they had for character and the movie. The more I've seen of Cavill's acting outside of his MoS performance, the more I see how much of his skills were wasted in that movie. His performance was so wooden and forgettable and the same goes for Amy Adams as Lois Lane which I've written about before. However, back to The Witcher, I really enjoyed watching the first season and I can't wait to see what will happen in the upcoming second season.

Mythology Mondays: Lifestyles of Gods and Monsters

It's Mythology Mondays which I forgot to post something for last week. But the book I picked for today is Lifestyles of Gods and Monsters by Emily Roberson. It looks like an interesting retelling of the Labyrinth myth which according to the description will have the competition being televised. That should add an interesting twist to the story along with other modern touches.

This definitely seems like a book I want to read.

Book: Lifestyles of Gods and Monsters by Emily Roberson

Description:

Greek mythology meets the Kardashians in Emily Roberson's Lifestyles of Gods and Monsters, a fresh, fast-paced debut young adult novel about celebrity culture, family dynamics, and finding love amidst it all.

Sixteen-year-old Ariadne’s whole life is curated and shared with the world. Her royal family’s entertainment empire is beloved by the tabloids, all over social media, and the hottest thing on television. The biggest moneymaker? The Labyrinth Contest, a TV extravaganza in which Ariadne leads fourteen teens into a maze to kill a monster. To win means endless glory; to lose means death. In ten seasons, no one has ever won.

When the gorgeous, mysterious Theseus arrives at the competition and asks Ariadne to help him to victory, she doesn’t expect to fall for him. He might be acting interested in her just to boost ratings. Their chemistry is undeniable, though, and she can help him survive. If he wins, the contest would end for good. But if she helps him, she doesn’t just endanger her family’s empire―the monster would have to die. And for Ariadne, his life might be the only one worth saving.

Ariadne’s every move is watched by the public and predestined by the gods, so how can she find a way to forge her own destiny and save the people she loves?

Art of the Day: Hera Syndulla and Kanan Jarrus

Artwork: Kiss by Lorna-Ka

Characters Reading: Lydia Martin

Required reading took on an entirely different meaning in an episode of Teen Wolf when Lydia Martin and rest of her friends needed to read the book The Dread Doctors by T.R. McCammon. They hoped that by reading the book, it would make it easier for them to find a way to stop the evil Dread Doctors.

It was a good plan, however reading the book had a strange effect. It caused them to dredge up old repressed memories of traumatic incidents such as Lydia remembering seeing her grandmother Lorraine Martin being experimented on in Eichen House, a mental institution.

My Latest Obsession: Ben 10 (Reboot), Candles and more

It's October!

The official start of the spooky season and we can start celebrating the 31 days of October. Aside from obsession over this spooktacular month, here are some other things that I can't stop thinking about.

Ben 10 Reboot

Yesterday, I started watching the first season of the rebooted Ben 10 animated series. Although, there are a few changes from the original series such as the animation style and including characters from various Ben 10 sequel series, I really like this show. Ben is still an annoying pain using the Omnitrix to be a hero, Gwen still loves to learn and read and Grandpa Max still loves to cook gross food.

I'm usually not a big fan of reboot mainly because why keep remaking shows instead of creating something new. But I am enjoying this new take on Ben 10 and it's a fun show.
