Book Watch: Six Comics/Graphic Novels from Star Wars to Wonder Woman

This is a great time to be a comic book reader because there is such a large variety of book to read from.

For this Book Watch I wanted to focus on some comics I've been keeping my eye on such as the highly anticipated Wonder Woman Earth One. I can't wait to read that book.

Here are the rest of my picks:

Comic Book Wednesday: Sept. 30th Picks

I have a small group of books on my list this week and the only two new ones are: Wonder Woman '77 Special #2 and Cavalry: S.H.I.E.L.D. 50th Anniversary.

I really have to say this, the cover for Superman #44 is just hideous. I am not a fan of John Romita, Jr.'s artwork. It always looks awful and for some reason he's touted as this amazing artist but every time I see his artwork it never looks good.

Archie Comics

Archie #3 (Immonen Variant Cover)

Book: Archie #3

Description:

Something strange is looming over Riverdale-and it's taking the shape of a giant mega-mansion owned by an elusive mogul. Why has he chosen the quaint town of Riverdale, USA as his base of operations? And how is he going to use the teens of Riverdale High to further his political aspirations?

Big questions and challenges await the teens and townsfolk-meanwhile, a new student has graced the halls of Riverdale High and she's turning heads in a BIG way! Find out all the answers to these important questions in the third issue.

Book Review: Super You: Release Your Inner Superhero

Book: Super You: Release Your Inner Superhero by Emily V. Gordon

Source: Borrowed from Publisher/NetGalley for an honest review

Publication Date: Available now

Rating: 3 stars

Review:

The author Emily Gordon is a former therapist who devised a way to get readers on there way to a better them a.k.a. a Super You. I don't read a lot of self-help books but compared to the ones that I have read this wasn't bad. Similar to traditional self-help books the author is seeking to help the reader but the author took an interesting approach by using the concept of superheroes as a way to reinforce her methods and advice. The superhero angle was interesting although there isn't as much superhero stuff as I thought would have been in the book especially in regards to how the description was written.

I think there is a lot of helpful advice in this book and it was nice to get a refresher on how best to deal with problems, how to understand what you're feeling and understanding others feeling, how best to express yourself and more. This book would really benefit anyone but more so for someone who has very low self-esteem or maybe need some help in figuring out their lives.

The author makes a point of stating that improving oneself isn't something that's going to happen quickly or over night, it takes time. Something I found really interesting about this book was that the author not only wrote about the good things about her life but also the bad and insecure parts of it. She allowed the reader to see that her life was a bit of mess at times too and how she eventually went about fixing it. Because as the saying goes "Nobody's Perfect."

As far as self-help books this wasn't a bad read, it certainly wasn't boring but the author does ramble on at times. The book does sort of kick start your inner-cheerleader or in this book's case inner-superhero and start seeing if there are areas in your life that maybe need looking at.

Geek Find: Star Wars Hoodie (HSN Cares)

Last night, I did tune in to watch the HSN Cares Star Wars Special and I saw a few interesting things like the luggage and the headphones. However, I didn't buy anything from the live show instead I went on the HSN website and found more Star Wars items there. I ended up ordering this really cute Star Wars hoodie.

That was my first time ordering anything from HSN, my hoodie should arrive sometime next month. All that aside, I'm just glad that even my small purchase went to help a worthy cause.

Currently Reading: Batwing vol #3 (New 52) and A Wedding in Truhart

Even though I won't start reading these two book until tomorrow I still wanted to post what I'm currently reading.

I'm trying to get caught up with the Batwing series, I'm still reading the one with David Zavimbe as Batwing. The first and second volumes were great, I hope this will be too. But with two different writers I wonder if everything will mesh up well. Although, I'm familiar with both Judd Winick and Fabian Nicieza writing styles, I still want this to be a good read.

As for the second book, I haven't read a romance book in a while and thought I would give A Wedding in Truhart a chance. This will be the first time I will be reading something by this author, I'm looking forward to reading it. The description makes it seem as if it will be an easy breezy read.

Book: Batwing volume #3: Enemy of the State (issues #13-18) by Judd Winick (issues #13 & #14) and Fabian Nicieza (issues #15-18)

Illustrations by Marcus To (issues #13 & #14), Fabrizio Fiorentino (issues #15, 17-18) and Allan Jefferson (issue #16)

Color by Brian Reber (issues #13 & #14) and Pete Pantazis (issues #15-18)

Edition: Single Print Issues

Description:

Deputized by Batman himself, David Zavimbe dons Wayne Tech-designed armor to become the protector of his native Tanisha as a part of Batman, Incorporated. A police officer by day, David fights against the corruption in his country both in and out of costume, trying to set right a war torn region of Africa.

Batwing's alter-egos have never been under more fire. Within the bureau, David must fight against one of the most crooked cop forces on the continent. In his armor, Batwing tries to take down the deadly Father Lost and the Sky Pirate, who both put David's closest allies in danger.

Book Review: Hardy Boys: Murder by Magic

Book: Murder by Magic (The Hardy Boys Casefiles #98) by Franklin W. Dixon

Rating: 5 stars

Review:

It didn't take me long to read this book. I actually finished it earlier today but before I could write up my review, I went with a friend to an art fair.

This story was set in the 90s and was full of action, drama and suspense as the Hardy brothers try to figure out who murdered a popular magician's assistant.

When Frank and his younger brother Joe were not attending high school they were both volunteering as stagehands for Legerdemania which is a special event where some of the greatest magicians perform. When Gideon the Great was preforming his final act in which his assistant Miranda attempts to escape from a locked box while in a shark tank. But something goes wrong leaving Miranda dead. Was it an accident? Well, not according to the police who found evidence leading to murder and their no. #1 suspect is Gideon the Great.

The brothers were asked by Gideon's brother Dr. Savant, a hypnotist at the event, to find out what really happened. The more the brothers snooped around the more information they kept finding lead back to Gideon. But Joe and Frank weren't giving up especially since there were too many things happening off stage including two attempts on their lives.

As an introduction into the world of the Hardy Boys this was a pretty good read. It was well-written and fast-paced as it showed the brothers using their detective skills to solve a difficult mystery. I like that they also got a little help from their friends in solving this case.

Nesting: Stackable Mugs

Do you know why I love stackable mugs? They're great if your kitchen (like mine) is short on space. And even if you're lucky enough to have your dream kitchen with all the space you could ask for, stackable mugs not only make for easy everyday use but also add a bit of art to your kitchen.

Book Review: Star Wars: Dark Lord

Book: Star Wars: Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader (Star Wars: The Dark Lord Trilogy book #3) by James Luceno

Rating: 5 stars

Review:

All I can say is, wow this was amazing! It's hard to image that this is the same author who wrote that less than stellar Star Wars: Tarkin book. This was so good that I didn't want to put it down, I had to know what was going to happen next.

This story not only focused on Darth Vader's descent into the Dark Side as he becomes more and more accustomed to his new life as a Sith but also on a small group of Jedi who had managed to survive Order 66.

The book opens with Jedi Masters Roan Shryne and Bol Chatak, Padawan Olee Starstone and clone troopers as they try to invade a separatist stronghold but just as they were about to succeed at their task, the troopers turn on them. Thanks to some troopers who didn't agree with the Order, the three Jedi were able to get away. However, they were still trapped on the planet with no foreseeable way to leave. Quick thinking from the Jedi had them changing their clothes to those of mercenaries but they were still caught but thankfully the troopers didn't take too much notice and rounded them up with the other mercenaries.

Their small bit of luck was quickly turning into dread when the Emperor's new right hand Darth Vader showed up. His visit brought about the death of one of the Jedi and the clones that allowed them to get away. Luck was still with the remaining Jedi Master and the Padawan but time was running out and they needed to get away fast.

Thanks to help from an unlikely contact, the Jedi were able to evade capture but this set in motion a series of events that will have them trying to stay ahead of Darth Vader. The story also gave some attention to Emperor Palpatine, Bail Organa, Chewbacca, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Tarkin, C-3PO and R2-D2.

I really like this story because it was exciting, fast-paced and well written. I thought that all the characters were very well-written and had good development. I like that many of the characters that readers are familiar with were completely in character. You also get to see how Vader was thinking as he let go of his old life as Anakin Skywalker and fully embraced the Dark Side.

The author really did a fantastic job with this story. I'm really glad I lucked up on finding this, I hope in the future I find more Star Wars books that are as good as this one.

Books of Interest: Shoes To Die For and The Coincidence of Coconut Cake

With only seven days left of my challenge to not buy any books until October my wishlist has been steadily growing. Here are two more books that I recently added to my list:

Book: Shoes To Die For (A Jaine Austen Mystery book #4) by Laura Levine

Publication: Available now

Publisher: Kensington

Description:

If clothes make the man, then what do Jaine Austen's elastic-waist pants and T-shirts make her? A fashion nightmare, according to her neighbor, Lance. She doesn't expect Lance--who works in the designer shoe department at Nieman Marcus--to understand. . .which is how she ends up visiting his favorite boutique, Passions. While the couture is definitely not for Jaine, the staff's gossip is. Tiny orange-haired clerk Becky starts complaining about her co-worker Giselle--a.k.a. "Frenchie"-- a brittle blonde who, when she's not making fun of customers behind their backs, adds extra-marital notches to her Chanel belt. Though Jaine doesn't land a new look, she does land a new job when Passions' owner gives her a chance to write their new magazine ads.

But when Jaine arrives the next morning to pitch her ideas, she finds Frenchie pitched over, stabbed in the neck by one of her own stilettos. Now all Jaine has to do is figure out who hated Frenchie the most, in a case of death by designer knock-off. . .

Book: The Coincidence of Coconut Cake by Amy E. Reichert

Publication: Available now

Publisher: Gallery Books

Description:

You’ve Got Mail meets How to Eat a Cupcake in this delightful novel about a talented chef and the food critic who brings down her restaurant—whose chance meeting turns into a delectable romance of mistaken identities.

In downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Lou works tirelessly to build her beloved yet struggling French restaurant, Luella’s, into a success. She cheerfully balances her demanding business and even more demanding fiancĂ©…until the morning she discovers him in the buff—with an intern.

Witty yet gruff British transplant Al is keeping himself employed and entertained by writing scathing reviews of local restaurants in the Milwaukee newspaper under a pseudonym. When an anonymous tip sends him to Luella’s, little does he know he’s arrived on the worst day of the chef’s life. The review practically writes itself: underdone fish, scorched sauce, distracted service—he unleashes his worst.

The day that Al’s mean-spirited review of Luella’s runs, the two cross paths in a pub: Lou drowning her sorrows, and Al celebrating his latest publication. As they chat, Al playfully challenges Lou to show him the best of Milwaukee and she’s game—but only if they never discuss work, which Al readily agrees to. As they explore the city’s local delicacies and their mutual attraction, Lou’s restaurant faces closure, while Al’s column gains popularity. It’s only a matter of time before the two fall in love…but when the truth comes out, can Lou overlook the past to chase her future?

Set in the lovely, quirky heart of Wisconsin, The Coincidence of Coconut Cake is a charming love story of misunderstandings, mistaken identity, and the power of food to bring two people together.

In Remembrance: Jack Larson

It was sad to hear the news about the death of actor and playwriter Jack Larson. According to reports, at the age of 87, Larson died Sunday, September 20, 2015 peacefully in his sleep with his loyal dog by his side in his home in Brentwood, CA.

Although, he was best known for playing Jimmy Olsen on the 1950s Superman series "Adventures of Superman" he made a career from writing and producing.

Adventures of Superman is a show that I recently started watching about 2 years ago when I purchased all six seasons of the show. I thought his version of Jimmy Olsen was great, because he brought to the screen the perfect amount of dorkiness. Jimmy was never cool and this series showed it, which is why I adore Larson's Olsen.  He was a complete dork but he also possessed all the other good qualities that Jimmy had.

I always saw Jimmy Olsen as a geek who enjoyed life and Larson's portrayal was simply spot on.

Book Review: Marvel Knights: Hulk

Book: Marvel Knights: Hulk: Transformé (issues #1-4) by Joe Keating with illustration by Piotr Kowalski and color by Nick Filardi

Edition: Single Print Issues

Rating: 4 stars

Review:

This is the second Marvel Knights miniseries that I've read and enjoyed. I may have to look into picking up a few more.

The story opens with Bruce Banner in Paris suffering from some sort of amnesia. He was found floating in the Seine by Dyane, a woman who had noticed him acting strange earlier in the day on the subway. Dyane helped him by treating his wounds but he still couldn't remember who he was.

While trying to help jog his memory, Dyane takes him around Paris but they had no idea that two mysterious men in trench coats were looking for them. They found Banner in a bar and tried to capture him, it didn't work and Banner was soon able to escape but everything went terribly wrong when they started to transform into huge hulk like creatures. They chased Banner through the city and caused damage, destruction and death everywhere in their pursuit. But why did they want him?

A splintered group of A.I.M. was looking to bring in the Hulk to use as a weapon but if they couldn't do that then they would destroy him. But even in Banner's current state the Hulk is not one to be easily destroyed. After surviving the attack in Paris, Banner still wound up getting captured by the group, which was led by Nikoleta Harrow. Harrow had a plan to use the Hulk to attack A.I.M. but there was a problem, no matter what they do they can not get Banner mad enough to turn into the Hulk. But that didn't stop Harrow, she attempted one more try which resulted in the Hulk emerging but in a completely different yet controllable way.

Now able to control the Hulk, Harrow had him attack A.I.M. and anyone else she called an enemy. This story also gave an interesting look back at Banner's life through flashback as you see how he first got caught in the gamma testing and how everything changed for him there on. At some point, Banner regained his memory but too bad for him Harrow already set in place another part of her plan. With A.I.M. on the attack, she thought it was the best time to prove once and for all that she was the best there is. However, no one is stronger than the Hulk.

There were a lot of interesting things about this, such as it appears that all of what went on may have been concocted as some twisted game by Doctor Doom and Doctor Midas. Of course, those two would think playing with people's lives would be a fun game. I also like how this ended with Bruce not only trying his hardest to forgive himself for everything but trying to offer a sincere apology to someone who deserved it.

This turned out to be a good read, it was well-written with good artwork.

Book Review: Neptune Noir: Unauthorized Investigations into Veronica Mars

Book: Neptune Noir: Unauthorized Investigations into Veronica Mars, edited by Rob Thomas with essays written by various writers

Source: Borrowed from Publisher/NetGalley for an honest review

Publication Date: Available now

Publisher: Smart Pop Books

Rating: 2 1/2 stars

Review:

Even now when I think of Veronica Mars there are a couple of things that pop into my mind, first is the theme song and second is that Veronica was no doormat. Yeah, she did a lot of questionable things (mainly for those who were in need of help) but Neptune was a questionable place to live. While helping out her father, who was a private investigator, she learned more than she did sitting in most of her classes.

This was an interesting book that featured 18 essays written by fans, writers, TV insiders, etc. that focused on the first two seasons of Veronica Mars.

There were a few very well-written essays that made me remember why I had enjoyed watching this show however there were far more that made me wonder why I was still reading this. Many of the essays were written in such a boring clinical way that they started to blend together and feel like a chore to read. There was one that made me mad, in one essay the writer compared the pain of her high school break up to how Veronica felt after being raped. Heartbreak...rape, I'm not really sure you can even compare the two.

In the end, this was okay but I would just rewatch the TV series instead of reading this again. There were some good things about this but not enough to make this a must read.

Fashion Meets Comics: Sakura Haruno's Boots

Open toe shoes may be the standard footwear in the fictional world of Naruto and though they don't seem practical for ninja they do make them work. I could have taken inspiration from any of the shoes from that series but I decided to go with Sakura Haruno.

Sakura went from someone who although smart, second guessed her skills and abilities to become a more confident person who surpassed her mentor and became one of the best medical ninja around.

Her tall peep toe boots are so unexpectedly chic and edgy but surprisingly very fall. I like how there doesn't seem to be any fashion rules any more and now you have more of a potential to create something that's truly unique. Sakura's outfit is definitely unique but her boots stand out to me the most. They have this aggressive over the top look to them but they're also quite ladylike.

However you wear them, open toe boots are sure to make a statement be it relaxed and casual, sophisticated glam or edgy-cool punk.

There were so many looks that I loved that I had a hard time narrowing it down to the baker's dozen that I selected for this post.

Book Review: Vows, Vendettas and a Little Black Dress

Book: Vows, Vendettas and a Little Black Dress (A Sophie Katz Murder Mystery book #5) by Kyra Davis

Rating: 5 stars

Review:

This was crazy but in a good way. Sophie and her friends are never far from trouble or danger and it hit home even more so in this story. When Sophie, Dena and Mary Ann were over at Mary Ann's apartment celebrating some good news something awful happened. Dena had been shot while Sophie and Mary Ann had left the living room. The excitement they all enjoyed moments ago celebrating Mary Ann's engagement was now replaced by fear, anger and worry.

With Dena undergoing surgery all Sophie could think about was who could have shot her? Whoever did it, Sophie is not going to let them get away with it. Although she's a mystery writer, Sophie has solved her fair share of mysteries despite finding herself in immense danger.

Who could have done it? Well, that's exactly what Sophie was planning to find out. Clues point to several different people including one who has an insanely huge grudge against Dena. And could one of Dena's lovers in her polyamorous relationship be the shooter or is there a possibility that Mary Ann's ex-boyfriend Rick did it, he's definitely acting strange lately.

Meanwhile as Dena recovers, Sophie's sister Leah is trying her best to not only get Mary Ann to hire her as a wedding planner but also to change nearly everything about her wedding.

The story was fun but I'll be honest the mystery solving took a bit of a back seat. Sophie didn't investigate as much as she did in previous books but clues did turn up with some being revealed by her boyfriend Anatoly, a private investigator.

There were two issues that put a damper on the story, the first is Sophie and Anatoly's relationship drama. These two have a tumultuous relationship, you never know what's going to happen between them. Sophie is a passionate, impulsive and emotional person, so she sometimes leaves logic at the door and acts on every feeling she's having resulting with her and Anatoly either in some kind of an argument or having sex.

The other issue I had was with everyone trying to subtly and not so subtly make Mary Ann change her mind about how she wanted her wedding to be. So what, if she wanted to get married at Disney Land and have the bridesmaids wear peach taffeta dresses. It's what she wanted and they should have been a little more understanding about that.

I really did enjoy this story not only for how the characters interact but that the mystery actually kept me guessing. There were also some really funny scenes that had me laughing out loud at all the zany things that go on in this book.

This is something that I rarely get to say but I have completed this series, well the main books that is. There is one Christmas short story that I have not read but I did add it to my wishlist.

Toy Corner: Funko Nightwing

I try to be a smart shopper, especially in regards to collectables since I can't afford to buy everything I see. Which is why I love Funko because I can generally find something for a good price.

The Nightwing vinyl figure, my latest addition to my collection showed up today and it was in relatively good condition. There is only one minor issue just a small smearing of paint near his mask but other than that, it's fine.

Book Review: Trust

Book: Trust (Between the Lions book #1) by Jodi Baker

Source: Borrowed from Publisher/NetGalley for an honest review

Publication: Available now

Publisher: Between Lion Press

Description:

TRUST is a young adult, mythological, urban fantasy thrill ride about the darkly fantastical, supernatural Museion that has secretly protected humanity’s greatest treasures for millennia, and Anna, the sixteen-year-old New York girl who is the unknowing Heir to it all:

TRUST.
That’s what the voice inside my head kept repeating when I woke up between the infamous lion statues of the New York Public Library, with no idea how I got there and no memory of the last year of my life.

The only person I ever trusted was my mother, who lied about everything.

I want to trust myself, despite my missing memories. But hearing a voice inside my head obviously isn’t a good thing, especially since it know things I don’t… like how to speak Ancient Sumerian, the fact that yellow-eyed people aren’t actually people, and that my mother’s Egyptian ankh necklace was the key to unlocking the truth she was hiding:

I’m the last in a long lineage of powerful women whose secrets date back to the ancient Library of Alexandria.

I’m fighting like hell to stay alive while searching for both my missing mother and the truth, desperate to find something or someone I can trust.

Comic Book News: DC Comics cancelled more books and more

** Some news that I had not been expecting to hear was Sensation Comics featuring Wonder Woman being cancelled. I think it's actually better than the current Wonder Woman series. According to reports, the last issue will be #17.

Other books that have been cancelled are:

- Batman '66 (ends with issue #30)

- Doomed (ends with issue #6)

- Justice League United (ends with issue #16)

- Green Lantern: Lost Army (ends with issue #6)

- Gotham by Midnight (will end with issue #12)

- The Omega Men (ends with issue #7)

- Lobo (ends with issue #13)

** The Catwoman series will be getting a change with the creative team, the new team will be writer Frank Tiere and artist Inaki Miranda. The team is scheduled to take over in November with issue #47.

** Harley Quinn will be getting another new comic book series titled Harley's Little Black Book. It will be written by Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti and will be out in December. I like Harley Quinn, I've been a fan since Batman: The Animated Series but I think now the character has become too overused.

** Mary Jane Watson will be heading to the upcoming Invincible Iron Man series which is available in October with her first appearance being in issue #4 which will available in December. As of now it's not sure what her role will be in the comic but many speculate that she will become Tony Stark's latest love interest. The creative team for the series is Brian Michael Bendis and David Marquez.

It seems like Marvel is adding gimmicks to their books in hopes to increase sales. That cover is quite insulting because it's the same pose she had when she gave the iconic "Face It Tiger" line to Peter. It's almost as bad as that Justice League #12 cover where they recreated the also iconic pose between Superman and Lois Lane with an inferior version between Superman and Wonder Woman.

I do hope this will be a good move for Mary Jane giving her an important role in this series (but without her having to be in a relationship with Tony) especially since like Lois Lane she seems to be an afterthought over there at Marvel. Despite fans enjoying Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows, Marvel doesn't seem to get that fans like seeing Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson together and in RYV she was an amazingly well written character in that.

Rating: 2 stars

Review:

I would have given this higher ratings if the stories in these issues didn't feel as if everything was happening somewhere off page because what was presented wasn't bad it just felt disjointed. However, the writing was flat with stories that were going no where.

Issue #8 focused on Black Canary being sought for the murder of her husband, she along with Batgirl and Katana were being attacked by a mysterious group who were there to bring Dinah in. Meanwhile, Starling was sneaking around trying to find out more information about Dinah but she ended up finding out more than she was looking for after she broke into a secret hideout. This issue raised so many questions for me such as who were these guys that were attacking them? Because I have no idea who they were and the story certainly didn't tell me.

Issue #9 was a tie-in to the Court of Owls storyline, and had the Birds taking on one of the Owls' talons, a trained assassin. There was no real point to this story other than the Birds going from one location to the next fighting the Owls' trained assassin with Poison Ivy setting the focus for the next arc.

Issues #10-12 had the Birds heading to the rainforest to help revive Poison Ivy who sacrificed herself to help put talon in a deep freeze. While heading there, their plane was shot down and they were soon being attacked by these plant creatures. It all turned out to be some kind of trap/insurance of Poison Ivy's to get the team to help her stop several companies from destroying the environment. Some time later in the story after the team was fighting on a burning oil rig the scene then cut to Ivy in some sort of restorative tank. Next, the team was attacking Ivy after refusing to continue to go along with her eco-terrorist plans. This ends with a cliffhanger, was Ivy killed and will her plan continue even if she's dead?

Issue #0 told of how Black Canary first met Starling and Batgirl. She had gone undercover at Penguin's nightclub where Starling was also working to try to track down a bomb seller. However, her plan to stop the sell was nearly ruined when Batgirl showed up. With everything over with, it gave Dinah time to reflect, she was tired of being out there on her own and wanted to form a team. This was the start of that team, the reader also finds out something interesting about Starling and why she really joined the team.

Out of all of these issues the best one was issue #0 it was the only one with a complete story even though the writing was still flat. Similar to the first volume, Katana and Starling are still the only two characters that continue to be interesting. Despite issue #0 showing how the team was created, the Birds of Prey still do not feel like a team. They each have their own agenda and there is no real reason why they are even a part of this team.

The art stands to be the best thing about this volume despite the multitude of artists. I don't understand why all the humor and fun was taken out of the New 52 comics. Most of the stories are drab and so are most of the characters. Birds of Prey used to be an amazing series but the New 52 version is truly a pale comparison.

Currently Reading: Super You: Release Your Inner Superhero

Since I'm almost finished with reading Neptune Noir (I should have my review up in a couple of days), I figure it would be okay post my new current read. I'm not much of self-help reader but I thought Super You had an interesting concept of using comic books as way to better oneself.

Book: Super You: Release Your Inner Superhero by Emily V. Gordon

Source: Borrowed from Publisher/NetGalley for an honest review

Publication Date: Available now

Publisher: Perseus Books Group: Seal Press

Description:

Superheroes don’t start from glorious beginnings. Their origins are almost always marked by traumatic events that leave them helpless and scared. Batman witnessed his parents’ murder. Superman was sent away from his dying planet with no one to guide him as he grew up. Orphaned Catwoman was forced to steal food to survive on the streets of Gotham.

What makes these superheroes super is their determination to not be defined by helplessness. They embrace their origins, their flaws, and their mistakes, and strive every day to become the best versions of themselves – for the benefit of themselves and others.

Super You is a fun, friendly, and unabashedly geeky guide to becoming the superhero of your own extraordinary life. Author Emily Gordon examines comic book tropes to find lessons that anyone can apply toward overcoming tragic events and adversity in their own lives. With activities in every chapter to help identify each person’s superpowers, special tools, personal kryptonite – and weapons against it – Super You is the perfect sidekick for every growing hero, empowering everyday people to transform into the most kick-ass versions of themselves.

This looks like the cover to a comic book but I can't place it and my search came up zero. I've read some Heroes for Hire books but not every book that features these two characters.

Throwback Thursday: When Charlotte York Married Harry Goldenblatt

The Sex and the City sixth season episode The Catch aired on HBO Sunday, August 10, 2003 and focused on Charlotte York (played by Kristin Davis) marrying the love of her life Harry Goldenblatt (played by Evan Handler). Although the wedding seemed to be plagued with bad luck it just made the day seem that much more special.

Charlotte's dress was so beautiful, just look at all the details. I like that the accessories were kept to a minimum because with a dress as gorgeous as this you don't need to add a lot to it.

Review:

This series continues not to disappoint. The second volume starts with issue #6 featuring both Hawkeyes Clint Barton and Kate Bishop separately dealing with the aftermath of a flood. Clint went with his neighbor Gil "Grills" to help secure Grills' dad's house while Kate was in New Jersey attending an engagement party. Both had to use some quick thinking to solve very immediate problems.

The 7th issue takes a humorous look leading up to Christmas. Clint was trying his best to take some time off and relax but everything kept getting in the way from his outdated TV recording system (in which Tony Stark was absolutely no help in fixing) to the tracksuit guys causing trouble. This was not the holiday he was looking forward to.

Issues #8 and #9 had Clint helping out his favorite troubled red head again. It must be her looks because I seriously can't understand why he keeps helping her since it always lands him in big trouble. Black Widow (Natasha Romanoff), Mockingbird (Clint's ex-wife Bobbi Morse) and Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew) also appeared in these issues as they try to see how they can help Clint get out of his latest bout of trouble. Kate didn't exactly score any hero points with the three heroes as she did sort of help Clint at one point. Also shown were various criminals and villains trying to figure out a way to get rid of Hawkeye (Clint) and it also ends on bit of a sad note with something happening to Grills.

In issue #10, the tracksuit guys' trained killer Kazi is going after Clint but earlier he and Kate became acquainted at a party for her father. Not sure if anything romantic is going to happen between Kate and Kazi but I'm sure she's in for a shock once she finds who he really is.

Issue #11 was interesting, it was shown from Clint's dog Lucky's point of view where he tries to sniff out some clues as to what happened to Grills. His investigation had him running into the tracksuit guys and Kazi. There also seems to be some kind of problem growing between Clint and Kate and although it seems unclear what they said since Lucky only understood a few words, it's clear to see that Kate and Lucky are taking off for a little bit of fun and adventure in California.

I can see why this series has been praised by fans, it's awesome. It well written with the writing being both simple and complex. There's humor commingling with drama as the Hawkeyes go from one situation to the next. I can't wait to read the third volume to see what will happen next.
