Stiles' little blue Jeep is so iconic it can pretty much be considered another character on the show.

Comic Book Wednesday: February 28th Picks

I have something new on my list: Mera: Queen of Atlantis miniseries. I'm happy that Mera (who has been around for 55 years) got a miniseries, it's nice that the character is starting to get a little more attention. She deserves it, Mera is an amazing character and she's more than just Aquaman's wife. I can't wait to read this first issue.

Anyway, here are the rest of my books:

Why Don't Movie Theatres Sell Books?

I love going to the movies but I was wondering why there is not a small kiosk or stand set up to sell books at movie theaters? With so many movies adapted from books, that would be a great opportunity and location for publishers to sell the books to movie goers who may be interested in reading the book a movie is based on.

For instance when I went to see The Maze Runner I had not read the book but after watching the first movie I was definitely interested in reading the book and more than likely would have bought the book if it was being sold at the theatre. I eventually bought the boxset of the series later on from the bookstore but not selling books at the theatre is truly a missed opportunity.

If I had a movie theatre I would certainly look into doing something like this. The theatres would not have to sell the books on a long term basis just perhaps a couple of weeks once the movie is released. I don't think if theatres did this that it would discourage anyone from going to the bookstore but this idea would simply be an opportunity to reach readers who perhaps might not venture into a bookstore on a regular basis.

Not everyone who goes to the theatre wants to buy food and drinks but are perhaps looking for something different and books could be that. However, I know that there is a financial risk to selling anything that's not food and drinks which is probably why you don't see a lot of merchandise also being sold. But as a book fan, I'm always looking for new ways to interest people into reading.

So, what do you think, should theatres sell books?

DVD Tuesday: Coco

I love finding something fun and different to watch, the trailer for Coco looks fantastic, very colorful and eye-catching with an interesting story. I can't wait to pick this up at the store because I really want to see it.

What movies or TV shows are you getting this DVD Tuesday?

Currently Reading: Summer and the City

I'm postponing my reading of Bliss at least for now. I enjoyed what I've read so far but right now I just wanted to read something else. Searching through my bookcase I found Summer and the City.

I loved the first book, The Carrie Diaries and I figured it's a good time to read the finale book in the series. And at the end of first book, Carrie Bradshaw finally made it to New York City but not without something terrible happening but it also gave her the opportunity of meeting one of her future best friends Samantha Jones.

I can't wait to start reading this because I'm sure even more craziness is bound to happen to Carrie along with her meeting her other future best friend Miranda Hobbes in this sequel.

Book: Summer and the City (The Carrie Diaries book #2) by Candace Bushnell

Edition: Paperback

Description:

SUMMER AND THE CITY brings surprising revelations as Carrie learns to navigate her way around the Big Apple, going from being a country "sparrow" -- as Samantha Jones dubs her -- to the person she always wanted to be. But as it becomes increasingly difficult to reconcile her past with her future, Carrie realizes that making it in New York is much more complicated than she ever imagined.

With her signature wit and sparkling humor, Candace Bushnell reveals the irresistible story of how Carrie met Samantha and Miranda, and what turned a small-town girl into one of New York City's most unforgettable icons, Carrie Bradshaw.

Okay, movie geeks this looks good. As a huge fan of sci-fi movies, I'm going to have to see this and not to mention this is a great cast. There's Natalie Portman, Tessa Thomson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez and Oscar Isaac. Yeah, I really do hope people will go out to see Annihilation.

This is based on a book which I going to have to look into getting.

As an Alpha Werewolf, Why was Scott McCall so Weak?

I know Teen Wolf is officially over but I have a question that was never answered. Why was it when Scott McCall became a True Alpha werewolf, he never gained the Alpha strength? Aside from the fact that Scott's eyes turned red there was nothing that really changed once he became an Alpha.

Maybe being a True Alpha doesn't really bring any significant change because by the end of the series he was still relatively at the strength level he was in the first season. He certainly wasn't as strong as Derek Hale, Peter Hale or any of the other Alphas shown throughout the series. Even once Derek and Peter lost their Alpha status they were still stronger than he was. I don't know if it's because they were older born werewolves and he was a teenage bitten werewolf either way he never gained the strength. But that doesn't explain why Liam Dunbar (who was Scott's Beta and also a teenage bitten werewolf) was stronger than him. I do wonder if Liam's strength may have had something to do with his anger issues (he was diagnosed with having Intermittent Explosive Disorder).

Regardless, why didn't Scott get the power boost that comes with being an Alpha. The only time an increase in his strength was really shown was in the 4th season finale episode "Smoke and Mirrors" when he fought against Peter. But his extra strength felt like a residual from when he was temporarily turned into a Berserker.

At the end of the first half of season 5 (5A), I never understood why Scott was shown not really defending himself against Liam who had been manipulated by Theo Raeken into killing Scott. Even though Scott had been temporarily weakened by Theo (who had secretly triggered Scott's asthma into returning with a wolfsbane infused inhaler), as the Alpha, Scott still should have been able to easily put an end to the fight. Yet the writers chose to show a Scott who pretty much stood there and let Liam nearly claw him to death. Thankfully, Mason Hewitt was able to stop Liam before he killed Scott but he was unable to stop Theo who decided to finish what Liam had started.

After being revived by his mother, Scott's wounds were slow to heal which didn't make any sense. He should have immediately begun to heal, it wasn't like in season 3 (3A) when he had still been a Beta werewolf on the cusp of becoming an Alpha. He had fully embraced being an Alpha and should not have had the extreme difficulties he dealt with at the end of 5A.

Now that the show has ended, I guess I will never get the answer to my question. It's too bad because it really stands out that Scott's powers especially his strength never increased and it would have been interesting to know why. Regardless of the issue of his Alpha powers, Scott was an effective leader and if the series had continued for another season or two I do believe he would have become even better.

New Book Purchase: American Panda, Agent of Chaos and Devil's Advocate

I haven't bought a new book since last January which is why I'm so happy to show you the books that I ordered from Barnes & Nobles' Young Adult 3 for $30 sale. They arrived in the mail yesterday.

The X-Files books have been on my wishlist for quite a while and I couldn't pass up getting them once I saw this sale. And American Panda is one of the new releases that I just couldn't wait to read. It looks like it's going to be a cute and funny coming-of-age sort of book.

Fashion Meets Comics: Lois Lane (DCEU)

Whether you love or hate the DCEU movies there's one thing you can't deny and that's Lois Lane's fantastic work wardrobe which is as smart and sharp as the journalist herself. I like that she wasn't made to look frumpy and boring, Lois was super chic in suits, dresses, button down shirts paired with vests and pencil skirts or pants and a combination of other looks.

For this Fashion Meets Comics, I found a wrap dress that could work perfectly for the busy reporter on the go. This dress is something that can easily go from a long day of work at the Daily Planet to a night out for drinks.

What do you think, is this dress something DCEU Lois Lane would wear?

Trailer for Netflix Movie "When We First Met"

Okay, why am I just now finding out about this movie. I love romantic comedies, just wish there were more of them. Why has Hollywood stopped making these movies? They're still popular.

Anyway, after watching the trailer, I can't decide if Noah going back in time trying to get Avery to fall in love with him is endearing or creepy. Perhaps it's a little of both but I'm interested in watching this. I have a theory that they don't end up together and that perhaps he sees that despite all his efforts they're just not meant to be. But I could be wrong.

If any of you have seen this movie, what did you think of it?

When We First Met

Starring: Adam Devine, Alexandra Daddario, Shelley Hennig, Andrew Bachelor and Robbie Amell

Description:

Comic Book Wednesday: February 21st Picks

Happy Comic Book Wednesday!

I heard that DC Comics has cancelled quite a few books and I'm sure low sales played a part in the company's decision. Something I don't think publishers understand is that there is still a huge interest in comics but many find it easier to buy them either in the trade edition or digitally.

Although, I still enjoy going to the comic book store to pick up my weekly single issues there are still series that I wait to pick up in trade. I wish more companies would continue on with cancelled series but just publish them in trade only. That's what Boom! Studios is doing with the Goldie Vance series.

With that said, here are my comics for this week:

Book Deal: Barnes & Noble's Young Adult Book Sale (3 for $30)

As a Geek on a Budget, I'm always looking for a good deal (and to pass them along). And I found a good one, Barnes & Noble is having a 3 for $30 sale on Young Adult books. The sale goes until March 2nd which is great because it gives us bookaholics plenty of time to get a few books that we might be interested in reading.

I already went ahead and ordered a few books: American Panda by Gloria Chao, Agent of Chaos (The X-Files Origins book #1) by Kami Garcia and Devil's Advocate (The X-Files Origins book #2) by Jonathan Maberry. There are still several more that I might want to get but I bought these for now. I'll post them whenever they arrive.

I really can't wait to see this. So until then, I'm going to do my best to avoid spoilers.

Lois Lane Friday: A Sneak Peak at the Smallville Funko Collection

Back in December, I posted that Funko was finally creating a Lois Lane figure. It's going to be included in the Smallville collection. They recently released a few images from the upcoming line which will not be available until April.

These are pretty cool, I'm definitely going to have to get the Lois Lane, Clark Kent and Green Arrow figures. But I'm on the fence about getting Lex Luthor, was never a fan of the character. However, Michael Rosenbaum did such an amazing job on Smallville with the character that I just may have to pick this up when it's available.

Fashion Meets Comics: Betty and Veronica Hoodie

Do you remember when I posted a Fashion Meets Comics last Friday for a Betty & Veronica hoodie. I thought it was so cute that after I posted it, I ordered it. It was delivered a couple of days ago, just haven't had time to post it.

This was my first time ordering anything from the Betty and Veronica store but I'm glad I did because I really like this hoodie. It looks and feels great, very good quality. I think I may have found myself a new geek store.

Throwback Thursday: Dark Angel

Although, Dark Angel which premiered October 3, 2000 on Fox only stayed on for two seasons, it was a show that really stood out to me. It centered around a bleak post-apocalyptic future and starred Jessica Alba as the genetically engineered superhuman Max Guevara (with the barcode at the back of her neck registering her as X5-452).

This dystopian series which was set in Seattle followed Max as she tried to balance working at a bike delivery service, hanging out with friends and try to survive day-to-day life. While also laying low avoiding being recaptured by Manticore, the governmental group that created her and several others who had escaped when they were children.

In between doing all of that, she also wound up helping (and falling for) Logan Cale (played by Michael Weatherly) a.k.a. Eyes Only, a cyber journalist and social justice warrior who exposes corruption. They both worked to provide help to those who desperately needed it.

Max Guevara was an unlikely hero because at first she was reluctant to get involve. In the world they were living in, everyone tended to look out for themselves but she couldn't stand by and not help. Especially since she was created as the ultimate soldier.

Dark Angel was an interesting and unique show that's still one of my favorite shows to watch.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Book Review: Goldie Vance vol #1

Book: Goldie Vance volume #1 (issues #1-4) by Hope Larson with illustration by Brittney Williams, colors by Sarah Stern and letters by Jim Campbell

Edition: Single Print Issues

Rating: 5 stars

Review:

I feel like I've really honed my ability in finding good books because this first volume of Goldie Vance was an absolute delight to read.

When Marigold "Goldie" Vance is not at her actual job as one of Crossed Palms Resort's valet drivers, she's "assisting" the hotel's in-house detective Walter Tooey with cases. And they found themselves investigating a really interesting one when hotel guest Dieter Ludwig needed them to find a missing necklace.

Finding the necklace took a little thinking outside the box from Goldie along with a little illegal car racing but retrieving it was probably the easiest thing she had to deal with. Because no sooner than she brought the necklace back to the hotel, they find out Ludwig was missing and his hotel room showed signs of a struggle.

Back in Tooey's office, they found an interesting clue on the back of the necklace but they also realize that someone may have taken Ludwig. Even though the necklace was found, they now believe someone is after it.

Over the course of trying to solve the case, Goldie inadvertently got herself and her father (who manages the hotel) fired from their jobs. I guess there are consequences to Goldie unofficially getting involved with solving cases. But that's not going to stop Goldie from trying to find Ludwig and get the necklace back after it was stolen again.

Besides featuring a great mystery there are a lot of interesting characters in this story such as Goldie's co-worker valet driver Rob who has a crush on her friend Cheryl and he may have done something really stupid in order to get her attention. Meanwhile, Cheryl who is very smart, works at the front desk of the hotel but one day hopes to become an astronaut.

You also find out some interesting things about Goldie along the way. She is very observant but rather impulsive which tends to get her in huge amounts of trouble. Her parents are divorced and although she lives with her father, she has a great relationship with her mother. She has a long standing rivalry with Sugar Maple, the daughter of the hotel owner. She also has a crush on Diane who works at the record store.

This was a great read because the story which was a lot of fun is filled with suspense, twists and humor. What I love about this series is you have a plucky wannabe assistant who is actually the one who is really solving the cases. Poor Walt, it's a wonder he hasn't been fired yet.

As a mystery fan, I really enjoyed this and now I can't wait to read the second volume.

Happy Valentine's Day!

What are you comic book loving fans picking up today? The first issue of a new Xena: Warrior Princess miniseries is out today. It's written by Meredith Finch who up until now was mostly known for writing the New 52 Wonder Woman series (issues #36-#52) which garnered mixed reviews. I wasn't particularly a fan of her vision for Wonder Woman but I am willing to give her writing another chance by picking up this Xena miniseries. I really hope she has a better understanding of who Xena is than she did for Diana/Wonder Woman.

Well, other than that, the rest of the books are my regulars. Here's my list:

Fashion Meets Comics: The African Symbolism of the 'Black Panther' Costumes (Video)

It's prettying interesting learning how the Black Panther's Costume Designer, Ruth E. Carter incorporated African culture and tribal fashions in developing the costumes for the film. Currently Reading: Bliss

I was reading Bliss earlier today, it's a middle grade magical food adventure. And so far it's off to a really good start.

Book: Bliss (Bliss Bakery book #1) by Kathryn Littlewood

Edition: Digital

Description:

Rosemary Bliss’s family has a secret. It’s the Bliss Cookery Booke—an ancient, leather-bound volume of enchanted recipes like Stone Sleep Snickerdoodles and Singing Gingersnaps. Rose and her siblings are supposed to keep the Cookery Booke under lock and whisk-shaped key while their parents are out of town, but then a mysterious stranger shows up. “Aunt” Lily rides a motorcycle, wears purple sequins, and whips up exotic (but delicious) dishes for dinner. Soon boring, non-magical recipes feel like life before Aunt Lily—a lot less fun.

So Rose and her siblings experiment with just a couple of recipes from the forbidden Cookery Booke.

A few Love Muffins and a few dozen Cookies of Truth couldn’t cause too much trouble . . . could they?

Black Panther: Poster #2

I really like this poster it's visually impressive with the Black Panther gazing upon Wakanda while standing on a huge panther statue. The scale of the statue and the view of the city, that's amazing.

Fashion Meets Comics: Betty & Veronica Hoodie + B&V Comic Book News

I'm a huge Betty and Veronica fan, I've been reading the comics for years. I spotted this Betty and Veronica Hoodie and was thinking of getting it. From the red stripe on the cuffs and hem to the simplistic look. I especially like that there is nothing on the back because sometimes less is more.

This is so cute, I could really see pairing this with a lot of stuff.

I have some good news for us classic Betty & Veronica comic book fans, there is going to be a new comic book series, Betty & Veronica Friends Forever. It will be written by Bill Golliher, illustrations by Dan Parent, inks by Rich Koslowski, colors by Glenn Whitmore and letters by Jack Morelli. The series priced at $2.99 per issue will feature a different theme each month with the first centering around being "At the Movies". The first issue will be available sometime in May.

As a side note, I do wish more female writers got the chance to write for Archie Comics.

Book Review: Lily B. on the Brink of Paris

Book: Lily B. on the Brink of Paris (Lily B. book #3) by Elizabeth Cody Kimmel

Edition: Paperback

Rating: 4 stars

Review:

This was a cute read as the story follows Lily Blennerhassett and seven of her Mulgrew Middle School 8th grade French classmates on a school trip to Paris, France. The chaperone was their French teacher Madame Chavotte which I found to be slightly unbelievable. Because it's hard to believe that there would be only one chaperone accompanying eight students on an international trip.

As an inspiring writer, Lily one day plans to write a great novel, she hopes to find her inspiration while in Paris. But her Parisian experience was not exactly like she had hoped. Instead of glitz and glamour, they were staying in a hotel that was more like a dorm and the food served there was equally unimpressive.

While the accommodations may be lacking, the sight seeing more than made up for it. Among the sights the class visited was the magnificent Notre Dame Cathedral which was an awe inspiring experience for Lily. From this trip she wanted to experience the culture of Paris but not by being a Simple Tourist with ones nose in a guide book.

But the use of a guide book (which was still in her suitcase) would have come in handy when she got separated from her group and got on the wrong subway train. She had not been paying attention when her classmates, Janet, Bonnie and Charlotte were in the subway. She was too busy trying to figure out a potential character for her book to notice that she had gotten on the wrong train.

It was bad enough that she was lost and going the wrong way but she needed to get to the Louvre at a certain time to meet up with her teacher and the rest of her classmates. Because if her teacher found out she had gotten separated from the group (which was a warning that was stated quite often) she could ruin the international school trip for the entire school. It was interesting to see Lily who is rather inept with tech try to figure out how to use her cellphone. Which came in handy when her classmate Lewis helped her by texting her the location of the group once she finally arrived at the museum. But getting to the museum was an adventure, she was so nervous she had a difficult time trying to communicate in French as she tried to get directions. I'll leave the mystery of how she finally arrived at the museum unspoiled for anyone who wants to read the book.

However, this wasn't the only mishap Lily had while in the city of lights and that's because she tends to be a little bit scatterbrained and not paying particular attention to details. She tends to rely on her friend Charlotte's organizational skills instead of taking responsibility in solving her own problems (which her friend pointed out). But she's working on it.

This was my first time reading anything from this series and Lily B. on the Brink of Paris was a well-written fast-paced story that was humorous with a little bit of drama as it gives the reader an arm chair view of Paris. Although the story focused on Lily, the reader does get to know her eclectic classmates. I think Lily learned a lot about herself from this trip, she was definitely less disorganized by the time the trip was over. I enjoyed reading this and I'm interested in reading the first two books in the series.

Channel Zero: Butcher's Block Premieres Tonight

The third season of the syfy channel's horror anthology series Channel Zero premieres tonight. And I can't wait to see it because Butcher's Block looks to be just as creepy as the last two seasons. I love that last season's No-End House starred Aisha Dee from The Bold Type and this season has Holland Roden from Teen Wolf.

Okay, who else is going to be watching this?

Channel Zero: Butcher's Block                   Wednesdays at 10:00 PM EST             syfy channel

Cast: Olivia Luccardi, Holland Roden, Rutger Hauer, Diana Bentley and more

Description:

Butcher's Block follows Alice Woods and her sister Zoe who have moved to a small town to start over. Alice lives in constant fear of inheriting Zoe’s schizophrenia. On the outskirts of town lies Butcher’s Block, a hellish neighborhood where junkies roam and lawlessness abounds. It is here the sisters encounter Joseph Peach and his eerily charismatic family.

The Peach’s are not your ordinary family; they live above the Butcher’s Block in a dimension that is a dark utopia. They offer the sisters a place at their table with the promise of a world without worry and without illness. The sisters soon find that the cost of living the good life comes at an unimaginable price and there is a fine line between escaping insanity and embracing true madness.

Black Panther: Poster #1: Princess Shuri

With the Black Panther movie set to be released in a few days, I figure why not start rolling out the posters. The first goes to Princess Shuri who designed and created most of Wakanda's modern technology and that speaks volumes because not only is she a teenager but a scientific genius. Not to mention she's considered to be one of the most smartest people in the world.

Fashion Meets Comics: Funko Wonder Woman T-Shirt

I need to add this Wonder Woman t-shirt to my wardrobe, it's so cute. I have a lot of superhero t-shirts but lately I feel like I'm wearing the same ones over and over again, so I need some new ones. And this one is absolutely adorable and I want it.

Sometimes life gets in the way, which has caused me to get a little behind on reading some of my weekly comics. There are still pre-New 52 and New 52 comics that I still haven't read yet. Now for today's comics, I have something new, The Backstagers Valentine's Day Special. That reminds me I still need to finish reading The Backstagers miniseries, the last issue I read was issue #4.
