Non-Canon Couples Week: Day #6: Kara Danvers and Lena Luthor

I'm still surprised by how popular the non-canon couple Kara Danvers (Supergirl) and Lena Luthor a.k.a SuperCorp is with fans. These two have an amazing chemistry and a wonderful friendship that has a hint of something more that could develop between them. Whether a relationship will ever happen between them doesn't matter because the TV series has shown plenty of times how much they care about each other.

However, I think this upcoming 5th season of Supergirl is really going to test their friendship with Lena finding out that Kara is Supergirl. She feels betrayed and I think that's going to cause a rift between these two that will either be short term and they are able to work on their friendship or it will lead Lena down a path towards being a villain like her brother Lex Luthor. It's going to be interesting seeing if their friendship will survive this.

There is no doubt that Kara and Lena are close friends but it's that spark of something more that fans have continued to pick up on.

Non-Canon Couples Week: Day #5: Victoria Vega and Beck Oliver

I never understood why on the Victorious TV series, Victoria "Tori" Vega and Beck Oliver were never a couple. They had an undeniable chemistry that sparked the moment they met when Tori accidentally spilled coffee on Beck in acting class on her first day of school at Hollywood Arts High School. That should have been the start of something between them.

Unfortunately, Beck was in a very dysfunctional and weirdly codependent relationship with mean girl Jade West. But that didn't stop fans (myself included) from hoping that Tori and Beck would eventually end up together at some point. Their loving friendship always seemed to unintentionally exude a fair a amount of attraction between them. They nearly kissed twice in the 3rd season episode "Tori Goes Platinum" which again should have started something between them. Despite, Beck and Jade no longer together, nothing happened between Tori and Beck and that's mainly because Tori didn't want to hurt Jade since they were friends.

Jade and Beck do eventually get back together to break up yet again which continues a cycle for this couple. In the long run, I don't see Jade and Beck staying together once they graduate from high school, their relationship was way too dysfunctional for it to continue. I think Tori and Beck would have been so cute together which is why they are still one of my favorite non-canon couples.

(Victorious season 3 episodes 10 and 11 "Tori Goes Platinum")

Book of Interest: Superman of Smallville

Superman fans, the new graphic novel, Superman of Smallville, is out next month. Although it's geared towards middle grade readers, I think anyone can read it. I certainly will, how can I not want to read about the adventures of a teenage Clark Kent a.k.a. Superman (more like Superboy) set in Smallville. This just seems like it will be a fun read.

If this is really good, I hope there will be more stories about a young Clark Kent and maybe even include Lois Lane in a few stories as well.

Book: Superman of Smallville by Franco Aureliani and Art Baltazar

Publication Date: September 3, 2019

Description:

Can Superman keep Smallville from going to the dogs?

Acts of awesomeness are happening around town. People are being rescued, runaway tractors stopped, and fires extinguished. This is all in a day's work for the hero known only as "Superman." But who is he, really?

Clark promises to be extra careful, but when random objects begin to take flight and disappear, his parents threaten to ground him. Except he's innocent! If Superman isn't responsible...who is? Join Clark in this hilarious adventure as he sniffs out the real culprit.

From New York Times—bestselling and Eisner Award-winning creators Art Baltazar and Franco, comes a fun, whimsical story featuring young Lana Lang, Lex Luthor, and of course Clark Kent.

"The Reincarnationist Papers" is Being Adapted into a Movie

The novel The Reincarnationist Papers by D. Eric Maikranz is being adapted into a movie titled Infinite. It will star Mark Wahlberg, Sophie Cookson and Dylan O'Brien and will be directed by Antoine Fuqua. It's scheduled to be released in theatres on August 7, 2020.

I had never heard of this book but the description makes it seem like an interesting read. It feels like a cross between sci-fi and historical fiction and I wonder if it will answer the question of whether Evan Michaels' reincarnation experiences are real or something created by his imagination.

I wouldn't mind reading this for book club, would anyone else be interested in reading it as well?

Non-Canon Couples Week: Day #4: Lucy van Pelt and Schroeder

I know Lucy van Pelt's love for Schroeder borders on the extreme but I think they could potentially be a good couple perhaps once she mellows out and stops bothering him. Which would probably happen years later once she's in high school (or some time later) and by then perhaps she has applied some of the psychology she has doled out to her friends over the years to herself.

As for Schroeder, perhaps if she's not constantly pestering him, they could finally become friends. It might takes several years for that happen and maybe later down the line it could possibly lead to romance. She does really like him but her obsessive behavior makes him not want to be anywhere near her which is easy to understand.

Non-Canon Couples Week: Day #3: Sif and Thor (MCU)

Something that always annoyed me about the first two Thor movies was Thor and Dr. Jane Foster's lackluster romance. They had absolutely no chemistry and should have been nothing more than friends. Their supposed romance was boring and completely fizzled on screen.

I don't understand why someone (i.e. the writers, directors, etc.) didn't see the lack of chemistry between Jane and Thor in the first movie and not correct it by making Sif the new love interest in Thor: The Dark World. Despite Sif and Thor's limited scenes in both movies, they had amazing chemistry that should have carried over into a romance. I found Sif to be playful, confident, loyal and unbelievably fierce. Meanwhile, Thor was easygoing, caring, level-headed, a little over-confident and extremely powerful.

It really was a missed opportunity not to have had Thor and Sif together especially since they had such incredible chemistry and played off each other rather well. Their relationship should have evolved from friends to lovers especially since the blueprint was already there. Too bad it never happened and who knows if Sif and Thor will ever see each other again in the MCU.

Non-Canon Couples Week: Day #2: Leah Clearwater and Jacob Black

To this day, I still don't understand how Twilight author Stephenie Meyer could have made werewolf Jacob Black's love interest Bella Swan and Edward Cullen's human/vampire baby daughter, Renesmee. This was so disappointing on so many levels, especially when werewolf Leah Clearwater would have made the perfect love interest.

Jacob and Leah had a connection that began with a lot of animosity while they were members of Sam Uley's pack. But it gradually started to change with them becoming friends especially once they became unexpected yet effective pack mates in Jacob's pack in order to protect a pregnant Bella Swan against Sam's pack. And during that time, it felt like there was a spark of something more growing between them.

I feel like these two were perfect for each other and the story would have been immensely better for both Leah and Jacob seeing them go from frenemies to falling in love. Instead the author decided to make a baby Jacob's future love interest, which was so weird, Jacob (and Leah) deserved so much better than that.

Besides being werewolves, they both had their hearts broken (hers by Sam and his by Bella) and I think that was something that could have initially built a strong bond between them. It would have allowed both of them a chance to have had a better understanding of each other's pain of dealing with a broken heart. I think it would have made it easier for them to have moved on from their heartbreak and bitterness. Perhaps they would have stopped being so hostile towards each other and become friends a lot sooner.

These two had a fascinating story and amazing chemistry that should have grown from there with them falling in love and realizing it happened without imprinting on each other. I thought imprinting was strange, it felt like it took away someone's ability to choose who they loved. Anyway, I think they have a lot in common and complement each other rather well with both being strong-willed, impulsive, opinionated, loyal, caring and extremely powerful. They would have had an intense and passionate relationship that would have rivaled Bella and Edward's for sure. I also think they would have been the most powerful couple within the Quileute tribe.

It was just so annoying reading the books and seeing a potential relationship between Leah and Jacob that was overlooked in favor of having Jacob imprinting on a baby.

Non-Canon Couples Week: Day #1: Finn and Poe Dameron

It's been three years since I posted my first Non-Canon Couples Week and since I have so many favorites I wanted to post some more. I'm starting the first day with one of my favorite Star Wars non-canon couples: Finn and Poe Dameron.

I have been rooting for Finn and Poe to be a couple since the moment they met in The Force Awakens when Finn (or FN-2187) deserted The First Order to help Poe. However, even more so when they reunited at the Resistance Base because at that point Finn thought Poe was dead. So, he was definitely shocked to find the pilot still alive and not to mention he got to keep Poe's jacket after Poe delivered the iconic line "keep it, it suits you". It's hard to overlook the flirty vibe between them especially with Poe biting his lip while stared at Finn.

Not since Princess Leia and Han Solo in the original Star Wars trilogy have I been rooting for two characters to be in a relationship. Poe and Finn have such a wonderful chemistry that they could have had an equally iconic and amazing love story if given the chance.

As much as I would love for Disney to make FinnPoe cannon, I doubt it will happen because they would have acknowledged or confirmed it in The Last Jedi. So, unless they plan on surprising us FinnPoe fans with something in The Rise of Skywalker, it's most likely won't happen.

Even if it doesn't happen, I don't need it to be official to still be a fan of this would-be couple.

Fashion Meets Fandom: Bree Davenport's Mission Suit (Lab Rats)

Do you guys remember the Lab Rats TV series? One of the things that I loved about the series was that each of the bionic superhero siblings Adam, Bree and Chase Davenport and their step brother Leo Dooley had mission suits that were pretty cool. Each of their suits were in a combination of gray, black and red and out of the four, I thought Bree's catsuit was the most suited to her powers of super speed. She's the fastest person on Earth and I believe there is only one person who maybe faster and that's Skylar Storm, an alien superhero from the planet Caldera.

Bree's mission suit is sleek and form-fitting and designed to cut down on wind resistance while running. Unlike her three brothers, Bree's suit doesn't have any noticeable body armor, perhaps it's incorporated into the material.

The only thing I didn't like about her suit was the heeled boots, although stylish they were so impractical even if they were probably reinforced. I never understood why some female superheroes' suits include heeled boots, it feels so outdated.

Comic Book Wednesday: August 21st Picks

I'm sure by now every comic book and MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) fan has heard the news that Spider-Man will no longer be included in the Marvel movies. As a fan, it's disappoint that the Spider-Man characters are out of the MCU especially since you could tell Marvel was gearing up for something really big especially with that cliffhanger at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home.

I guess we'll have to see what Sony will do, maybe the company will continue with some aspects of the story or scrap it entirely for something else. Spider-Man may be gone from the MCU but there is always the comic books where you can read about Spidey's adventures within the Marvel Universe.

As for comics, the 100th issue of Scooby-Doo! Where Are You? is out today. This truly is a milestone issue and I can't wait to read it. Aside from that, my list has my usual group of books.

Book of Interest: Harley Quinn: Breaking Glass

I'm so happy that Poison Ivy is getting more appreciation from DC Comics. She will be featured in two books with Harley Quinn that will be released in the first week of September. The first book is this graphic novel, Harley Quinn: Breaking Glass on Tuesday, Sept. 3rd and the second is first issue of the Harley Quinn & Poison Ivy miniseries released on Wednesday, September 4th.

As much as I'm a big fan of both characters, it's Ivy that needs more promotion. I hope this newfound interest from DC Comics will continue because Poison Ivy is an amazing character. Anyway, I can't wait to read this book to see if Harley figures out who she is and whether she will side with Ivy or Joker.

Book: Harley Quinn: Breaking Glass by Mariko Tamaki with illustrations by Steve Pugh

Publication: September 3, 2019

Description:

With just five dollars and a knapsack to her name, fifteen-year-old Harleen Quinzel is sent to live in Gotham City. She's not worried, though—she's battled a lot of hard situations as a kid, and knows her determination and outspokenness will carry her through life in the most dangerous city in the world. And when Gotham's finest drag queen, Mama, takes her in, it seems like Harley has finally found a place to grow into her most "true true" with new best friend Ivy at Gotham High.

But when Mama's drag cabaret becomes the next victim in the wave of gentrification that's taking over the neighborhood, Harley gets mad. She decides to turn her anger into action and is faced with two choices: join activist Ivy, who's campaigning to make the neighborhood a better place to live, or join her anarchist friend Joker, who plans to take down Gotham one corporation at a time.

From Eisner Award and Caldecott Honor-winning author Mariko Tamaki (This One Summer) and Eisner Award-nominated artist Steve Pugh comes a coming-of-age story about choices, consequences, and how a weird kid from Gotham goes about defining her world for herself.

Was the Harry Potter book series a fluke or can other books spark as much interest in reading?

Do you remember when bookstores used to have midnight release parties for Harry Potter books? I remember waiting in line and seeing other Harry Potter fans (some in costumes) standing in line waiting sometimes for hours to get their hands on the latest book in the series. That was a magical time that I wish still continued or carried over to other books.

I wonder how do we get that energy and excitement back? I know there are still big readers out there who are buying books but why hasn't there been more books that garnered the same enthusiasm that Harry Potter did. Those books had tremendous success, even though it wasn't an over night sensation  but once they caught the attention of readers it was like a switch had been flipped and the books were flying off the shelves (no pun intended).

How do we get that to happen again? How do we get readers so excited about books that they are flocking to the libraries and bookstores to get them? Do books need more advertisement, more word-of-mouth, etc. for that to happen or was Harry Potter a fluke that probably will not happen again in our lifetime?

This looks like Jubilee and Wolverine are on a boring mission and have nothing to do besides waiting around for something to happen.

Lazy Sunday: Watching the Victorious Marathon

It's Lazy Sunday and I haven't done anything except watch the Victorious marathon on TeenNick. It's been a while since I've watched the show but I still love watching it. The show followed Victoria "Tori" Vega and her sister Trina and Tori's friends/classmates André Harris, Beck Oliver, Jade West, Robbie Shapiro and Cat Valentine as they always seem to find themselves in some of the most ridiculous situations either at their Hollywood Arts High School, their personal lives or while trying to pursue a career in acting and entertainment.

I feel like Victorious didn't get as much appreciation at the time because Glee (another awesome show) was on as well. I still love watching both shows because they were really good and funny and I also loved that they put a spotlight on the arts.

I noticed two things while watching this marathon and they are:

#1) Did Ariana Grande ever admit to getting plastic surgery? Because watching some of the episodes from the first two seasons you can see how different her face looks. I don't have anything against plastic surgery, it's your body you do whatever makes you feel good but I was just wondering if she's ever said anything about it since you can totally see how much her face has changed.

#2) When I recently started watching The Thundermans I thought there was something familiar about the family's house but I couldn't quite place it. That is until now, The Thundermans reused the set for Tori's house. The show altered a few things in the kitchen and living room but you can still tell it's the Vega house.

Sydney Park to star in the Netflix movie "There's Someone Inside Your House"

It's being reported that actress Sydney Park, who stars in the Pretty Little Liars spin-off The Perfectionist will star in the Netflix movie "There's Someone Inside Your House". The movie is based on the same titled book that's written by Stephanie Perkins and Park will star as the main character Makani Young.

I heard so many good things about this book and I can't believe I have it sitting on my shelf. I bought it two years ago and I'm going to try to read it before the movie is released which so far Netflix has not announced a release date.

Book

Book: There's Someone Inside Your House by Stephanie Perkins

Description:

It's been almost a year since Makani Young came to live with her grandmother in landlocked Nebraska, and she's still adjusting to her new life. And still haunted by her past in Hawaii.

Then, one by one, the students of her small town high school begin to die in a series of gruesome murders, each with increasing and grotesque flair. As the terror grows closer and the hunt intensifies for the killer, Makani will be forced to confront her own dark secrets.

Stephanie Perkins, bestselling author of Anna and the French Kiss, returns with a fresh take on the classic teen slasher story that’s fun, quick-witted, and completely impossible to put down.

Comic Book Wednesday: August 14th Picks

Happy Comic Book Wednesday!

For anyone who doesn't know, there is going to be a new Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy miniseries simply titled Harley Quinn & Poison Ivy. The six issue series will be written by Jody Houser with illustrations by Adriana Melo and the first issue will be available at comic book stores (and most likely digital) on September 4th, so don't forget to add it to your pull list before then.

As for today, I don't have any new series on my list just my usual books but I'm sure they will still make for a good read.

My 4 Favorite Looks from the 2019 Teen Choice Awards

I was looking at the fashion from this year's Teen Choice Awards and I couldn't help noticing how horrible so many of the fashion choices were. There were only four that I thought were the best dressed: Lucy Hale, Jessica Alba, Maddie Ziegler and Robert Downey Jr.

Everyone else looked like their stylists hated them and gave them the worst clothes ever or they decided to dress themselves and still picked the worst clothes ever. Either way it was some of the worst looks for the event.

Lucy Hale in Jean Paul Gaultier

This sparkly mini dress is so cute, the bold red and black colors makes it totally stands out. Lucy Hale's hair in a slightly wavy bob and striking make-up are perfect and I just love the red lipstick, it's total glam.

Max Thunderman: From Potential Villain to Hero

I've been watching The Thundermans TV series, I can't help wondering why Max Thunderman's parents Barb and Hank didn't seem worried about their son's aspirations to be a villain. They seemed to think it was a phase he was going through before he became a hero. Meanwhile, he was hanging with villains such as Dark Mayheim and enacting various plans and schemes to further his goal in becoming the ultimate supervillain. That doesn't seem like a phase to me and he even called his bedroom (which is the basement), his evil lair.

When Max wasn't actively creating villainous things to do, he was being encouraged not only by Dark Mayheim but by his friend/pet Dr. Colosso, the so-called former villain who was turned into a rabbit, to continue to do bad things. Max wasn't all bad, during his "evil phase" he did show that he cared from time-to-time and would go against his villainous tendencies to do what was right (usually at the last minute). I like that he eventually became a hero like the rest of his family but before that he truly was headed towards a path of villainy.

Something else that I really like about Max is that he is extremely intelligent but he does poorly in school because he's really lazy and doesn't make any effort to focus on his education. However, outside of school, there is no end to his intellectual endeavors, he's a tech genius who creates a lot of interesting inventions which he continued to do once he chose to be a hero.

I still think Max's parents should have been more concerned about his interest in being a supervillain. However, he ultimately made the choice (with a little help from his twin sister Phoebe) to be good and surprisingly he's a really amazing at being a hero.

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth are Separated

I was surprised to find out that Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus have officially separated after less than a year of marriage. Romance can be hard and I'm sure they probably worked on their relationship before separating but I guess things just didn't work out for them.

Ending a relationship is difficult enough but imagine being a celebrity and having to deal with everyone knowing about it as well. I wish them all the best and that they are not hounded by the media with annoying and invasive questions.

Three Book Series I Want to Read

I have three book series that I want to start reading soon: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, The Maze Runner by James Dashner and The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare. These books, which are still sealed, have been sitting on my shelf for a little over two years and I don't want them to sit there any longer before I get around to reading them.

So, after I finish reading Heat Rises by Richard Castle, I'll read the first book from either The Hunger Games or The Maze Runner. As for The Mortal Instruments, I believe the series crossover with the author other series The Infernal Devices trilogy. I'm not sure if I should start reading TMI before getting the other series. At the moment, I have no idea which first book I'm going to read from either THG or TMR but I'll figure it out.

Book of Interest: Down and Across

I know it's been a while since I've posted a Book of Interest and that's mainly because I hadn't found any books that interest me lately. Well, that's changed because I've recently found a lot books that I would like to read including this one, Down and Across by Arvin Ahmadi.

This seems like it will be an interesting story with a main character not being able to figure out what to do with his life while somehow winding up on an unexpected adventure. I'll add this to my wishlist with a note to buy soon because I really want to read this.

Book: Down and Across by Arvin Ahmadi

Description:

Scott Ferdowsi has a track record of quitting. His best friends know exactly what they want to do with the rest of their lives, but Scott can hardly commit to a breakfast cereal, let alone a passion. With college applications looming and his parents pushing him to settle on a “practical” career, Scott sneaks off to Washington, DC, seeking guidance from a famous psychologist who claims to know the secret to success.

He never expects an adventure to unfold. But that’s what Scott gets when he meets Fiora Buchanan, a ballsy college student whose life ambition is to write crossword puzzles. When the bicycle she lends him gets Scott into a high-speed chase, he knows he’s in for the ride of his life.

Soon, Scott finds himself sneaking into bars, attempting to pick up girls at the National Zoo, and even giving the crossword thing a try—all while opening his eyes to fundamental truths about who he is and who he wants to be.

Fashion: Amy Adams and Henry Cavill at the London Premiere of "Man of Steel"

I still love this Valentino dress that Amy Adams wore to the 2013 London premiere of Man of Steel. It was so cute and flattering on her and what I like about Amy's style is that she doesn't has a standard look. She always wears a lot of different looks on the red carpet from long and slinky to something ultra-cute like this nude and black mid-length strapless gown. The only thing I didn't like about this look were the shoes, they looked really uncomfortable.

As for hair, I liked that it was a simple updo styled with a headband. I thought it was really cute and a fun take on a classic look. Not to be left out, Henry Cavill also looked pretty good in his suit. However, I thought the pant legs seemed a little long because they bunched around his ankles.

It's hard to believe it's been six years since the release of Man of Steel, I still remember how high fan anticipation was and for some fans still is for this movie.

Comic Book Wednesday: August 7th Picks

I know you can enjoy horror stories all year long but I feel like DC comics should have waited until fall to have released the Dceased miniseries. There is just something about that time of the year, that's perfect for telling these types of stories.

Anyway, aside from Deceased, I have two more books (which are miniseries) on this week's list: Lois Lane and Invisible Woman. So, what books are you picking up?

Would you have hired Kevin for the Receptionist job in Ghostbusters?

Before I answer this question, I would like to go over my thoughts about Kevin. He truly was not qualified for the job as the Receptionist for the Conductors of the Metaphysical Examination (a.k.a. Ghostbusters). However, it's not as if Dr. Abby Yates, Dr. Erin Gilbert and Dr. Jillian Holtzmann received a lot of applicants for the position. In fact, he was the only one who inquired about the job. I figured they must have been very desperate for help if they were willing to hire him. Side note, hiring Patty Tolan was a good decision because unlike Kevin she brought a lot of knowledge, skill and competence in her job as a Ghostbuster.

Kevin was so bad at his job, he could barely answer the phone and take messages properly or inform the ladies ahead of time that they had a client or visitor who was there. You start to wonder why they didn't fire him? Well, I guess they were so used to him being at the office that despite his incompetence they didn't want to fire him. He does have a cheerful and bubbly personality and adds a touch of whimsy throughout the office. He makes me think of a Ken doll that's brought to life who really can't do anything but he does have an enthusiasm for life.

From a business standpoint, it probably would have been better to have set up an answering system for phone calls and then if anyone was in the office they could greet potential clients until they could hire an efficient Receptionist. However, odds are they would be waiting a long time before anyone else applied for the job. So, it probably didn't make any sense to get rid of Kevin because bad help is better than no help, I guess. Kevin may not be the smartest person but he does bring a sense of unexpected humor to the office.

Now to answer the question of whether I would have hired Kevin, my answer is no. As much as I think he's a wonderfully exuberant person, I think he's terrible at his job. And in all the time he was working there, he did not seem like he was getting any better at his job either. He reminds me of the character Synclaire James from the 90s TV series Living Single. She was just as naive, clueless and inept as he was and the only reason she had the job as Receptionist (and later Office Manger) for Flavor magazine was because her cousin Khadijah James is the Publisher and Editor of the magazine. So unless Kevin was a family member who truly needed a job (temporarily), there is no way I would have hired him otherwise.

Fashion Meets Fandom: Phoebe Thunderman

I mentioned before that I recently started watching The Thundermans TV series and although I haven't seen every episode yet, I already love this show. It centers around a family of superheroes who are slightly dysfunctional but they do love and care about each other even though at times they have a funny way of showing it.

This is my new favorite show and I wish I had found it sooner because it really is fun to watch. Another fun thing about this show is Phoebe Thunderman's fantastic wardrobe. By the way, her mother Barb also has a cool wardrobe as well.

I would consider Phoebe's style to be bohemian with a lot of flowy tops and dresses in cool prints and patterns, cozy and stylish sweaters, skinny jeans in various colors, cool jackets, etc. Her look also includes a lot of accessories such as necklaces, bracelets, earrings, scarves, headbands, bags and more. As for shoes, she mostly wears flats, sandals and boots in a variety of styles.

Phoebe has such a fun and cool style that I decided to create an outfit inspired by her. I picked an off the shoulder flowy print top and paired it with skinny jeans. For accessories, I picked a cuffed bracelet set and a fringe crossbody bag.

Book Club Picks for August: When in Doubt, Add Butter and Grimm Fairy Tales Presents: Robyn Hood: Origin

I'm a little behind in posting my book club picks for August but I figured better late than never. For The Book Girl's Book Club, I picked When in Doubt, Add Butter because it's been a while since we read any literature. I thought this book seemed interesting with it centering around food and perhaps some quirky characters.

As for the Comic Book Club, I picked Robyn Hood: Origin because I loved the comics I read several years ago. The funny thing is, I didn't read this first book in the Robyn Hood trilogy but read the second (Wanted) and third (Legend) books which were really good.

Let me know if you have any suggestions for book club picks.

The Book Girl's Book Club Pick:

Book: When in Doubt, Add Butter by Beth Harbison

Description:

As far as Gemma is concerned, her days of dating are over. In fact, it's her job to cater other peoples' dates, and that's just fine by her. At thirty-seven, she has her own business, working as a private chef, and has five steady clients who keep her hands full.

There's Lex, the fussy but fabulous department store owner who loves oysters Rockefeller and retro party food; Willa, who is morbidly obese and needs to lose weight under doctor's orders but still believes butter makes everything better; a colorful family who may or may not be part of the Russian mob; an uberwealthy Georgetown family in which the monstrously spoiled wife is "allergic to everything"; and finally, a man she calls "Mr. Tuesday," whom she has never met but to whom she feels a magnetic attraction, in part due to his taste for full-on comfort food.

For Gemma, cooking is predictable. Recipes are certain. Use good ingredients, follow the directions, and you are assured success. Life, on the other hand is full of variables. So when Gemma's takes an unexpected turn on a road she always thought was straight and narrow, she must face her past and move on in ways she never would have imagined. Because sometimes in life, all you need is a little hope, a lot of courage, and—oh yes—butter.
