Quote: Moira Rose (Schitt's Creek)

Gossip is the devil's telephone. Best to just hang up.

~ Moira Rose to Twyla Sands, Schitt's Creek season 4 episode 4: Girls' Night

Funny enough, Moira was the one gossiping about her daughter Alexis. However, after Twyla corrected her on the name of Ted's girlfriend, then Moira turned it around and made it seem like Twyla was the one gossiping. Moira was such an interestingly weird character. I just love watching Schitt's Creek, all the characters were so zany.

Trailer: Loki season 2

The trailer for the second season of Loki makes it seem like this will be better than the first season. Although, the first season wasn't bad but at times it didn't feel like Loki was the main character. I really thought the first season could have been better especially with more focus on Loki which is why this new season looks like it's going to be good (at least I hope so).

I am so happy to see Ke Huy Quan in this and to see what his character will do. However, I'm still not sold on Sylvie. There was too much focus on her and at times it felt like she was the main character instead of Loki. It felt like so many of her scenes in the first season could have easily gone to Loki who I thought was supposed to be the main character. Which is how the show was marketed. Anyway, I do hope this second season will make her a more interesting and better written character because so far she's not one of my favorite ones.

Loki season 2 will premiere Friday, October 6th on Disney Plus.

Hiatus Watch: Dark Winds season 2

No surprise I missed the second season premiere of Dark Winds because I haven't seen any promotion or advertisement. The second season premiered yesterday (Sunday, July 30th) on AMC and if I didn't already have the DVR set to record the series, I would have never known it was airing. So I was surprised to see the new episode in my saved recording that's for sure. Later today, I'm going to watch the first episode of the season.

The first season was so good, it's one of those shows that I couldn't wait to see the next episode. And I'm hoping the season two will be just as good. So for anyone like myself who didn't know the new season started nor have seen the trailer, it's included below.

Dark Winds season 2                                                  9:00 PM EST                                  Sundays on  AMC

Fun Marketing for the Red, White & Royal Blue Movie

With the SAG-AFTRA strike, actors cannot do press for any of their projects. So the promotion of the soon to be released Red, White & Royal Blue movie is entirely up to the marketing team. And something that I love is that they created Instagram accounts for the characters: First Son Alex Claremont-Diaz and Prince Henry. Below, I included the screenshots of each of their accounts.

I think this is not only just a fun way to promote the movie but also to give a little insight to the characters from their posts. Which is good especially for some like me who haven't read the book Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston yet. And we won't really get to know the characters until we see the movie (or finally get around to reading the book). Anyway, the movie will be released on Friday, August 11th on Amazon Prime.

Video: Actors' Strike

As with any news, there is a slight dip in interest as time goes on but I hope the Writers' and Actors' Strikes don't get lost in the daily shuffle of life. Because what the AMPTP and Studio executives over the years have made it impossible for most writers and actors to make a living pursuing their careers. The Studios make all the money while most of the writers, actors and crew members make enough just to get by.

Anyway, here's a recent video from BLD PWR (Build Power) that has some of actors highlighting some of the key issues SAG-AFTRA is fighting for. And please read the information in actor Kendrick Sampson's Instagram post.

Fashion Meets Comics: Ayesha (The Sovereign - Guardians of the Galaxy)

There is something so creepy about The Sovereign's quest for perfection. They engineer it in the creation of their people because to them Perfection is the key component to who they are as well as to everything in general. Which is why they made such interesting villains in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies because nothing is perfect and their attempt to strive for it makes them scary. By engineering perfection you lose what makes everyone unique. I would like to note that The Sovereign never would have been villains to the Guardians if Rocket hadn't stole some of their batteries. But this is getting away from the point of this post which is Fashion Meets Comics.

Quote: Nancy Gillian, Fundraiser Donor Guy and Mateo Chavez (9-1-1: Lone Star)

It's 9-1-1: Lone Star Tuesday. And I'm still surprised how Nancy Gillian and Mateo Chavez's relationship had totally grown on me. I went from feeling like "why are they together?" to they are quickly becoming one of my favorite couples. I just find them to be quirky, weird and adorable.

For the scene below, I wonder how much the Fundraiser Donor Guy was going to donate to the Stand Up to Cancer charity because Mateo's comment comparing the wine to reading books by Dostoyevsky really sold the guy into wanting to make a donation.

Nancy: Fun fact, this was actually donated by the oldest winery in the Hill Country.

Fundraiser Donor Guy: The Hill Country? But it's so nuanced, so mature.

Mateo: Familiar, yet unexpected. It's kinda like reading Dostoyevsky in the original Russian.

Fundraiser Donor Guy: Yes, exactly that. What did you say your name was?

Mateo: Mateo

Fundraiser Donor Guy: Mateo. Your palate is inspired. I'll be right back. My wife has my checkbook.

Nancy: Babe? You read Dostoyevsky? I love Dostoyevsky. How have we not discussed this?

Mateo: Oh, because I don't. I heard Cap say that last week while he was sipping Moscato. I thought it sounded good.

Nancy: Oh.

Entertainment News #27: Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies

Happy Tuesday! Here's a little Entertainment News:

- In surprising news, the cancelled and deleted Paramount+ TV series Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies is making a return. Well, sort of, the show will be available to purchase. As of Monday, July 24th, it's already available digitally and will be available on DVD Tuesday, November 7th. This is really good news. As soon as it was announced that this show along with others shows such as Star Trek: Prodigy were cancelled and will be removed, I tried to find time to rewatch Star Trek: Prodigy and watch Grease: Rise of Pink Ladies.

Well, I was able to complete my rewatch but I was only able to watch the first three episodes of Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies before the show was deleted. And what I saw was very good, so I look forward to finally watching the rest of the series once I get the DVD.

Video: WGA Picket Line Warm Up! (And Cool Down)

I can't believe this is the 13th week of the Writers' Strike as well as the Actors' Strike which is its early days but both are still going strong. Unfortunately, the Studio executives still have not gone back to negotiating but both the writers and actors are not letting that stop them from continuing their fight for fair contracts.

And speaking of staying strong, there's a fitness video I've seen floating around this morning. It's a nearly six minute warm up video created by WGA member and fitness professional Sheila Callaghan. And according to the video description is "designed to get you limber and loose for the picket line". Although, I highly doubt there are any actors or TV/movie writers reading my little geeky lifestyle blog but if you are, here's a fitness video you could try before and after striking.

And for anyone who is not writer or actor, you could still give this warm up a try. As with any exercise, check with your doctor before trying.

Art of the Day: Buck and Eddie

Artwork: Date by Angela (edits.archive)

I like this artwork or edit of Evan "Buck" Buckley and Edmundo "Eddie" Diaz on a date. It's really cute, the closest they've gotten in the show is an unofficial date in the sixth season episode Mixed Feelings which had both of them dressed in really nice suits while going to play poker. I think if they had them go on a date, it would have been the perfect surprise ending for the sixth season finale. Instead of how they ended it with Eddie and Buck ending up with the latest set of last minute lackluster love interests.

This artwork makes me wish that whenever the Studios finally offer the Writers and Actors a fair contract, that when 9-1-1 returns for the seventh season the Showrunner and writers will finally put Buck and Eddie together. It makes no sense narrative wise to keep putting Buck and Eddie in relationships with bland and boring love interests instead of putting them together. If the show had introduced Edith instead of Eddie during the second season who was still an army veteran with a child. And her and Buck still had the same amazing chemistry and went through all the same experiences that Buck and Eddie had gone through in the show, there's no doubt that Edith and Buck would have been together by the third or fourth season.

But since Eddie is a guy, the amazing chemistry him and Buck have together is ignored in favor of random bland and boring love interests. I do have to wonder how many more underdeveloped, bland and boring love interests will they continue to introduce until they realize that they already created Buck and Eddie to be the perfect love interest for each other?

Disability Pride Month: Geeky List #1

Happy Thursday!

It's Disability Pride Month and throughout these last couple of weeks I want to post a few Geeky Lists of shows and movies that have disabled characters. Whether they are main, recurring or guest characters, representation is important. Everyone has a story and no two stories are the same. Especially for a community who tends to be overlooked in our society.

For this first list, I included three shows and three movies that highlight a variety of different stories.

Photo of the Day: Writers' and Actors' Strike (9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Lone Star)

On Monday (July 17th), some of the cast and crew of 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Lone Star were out there striking with their fellow actors and writers in Los Angeles. I really like this picture, they look determined, positive and tired. I do hope the writers and actors will eventually get a good and fair contract and everyone in the industry can go back to work.

Also, there is a non-profit SAG-AFTRA Foundation set up to provide donations. Because many if not most of the actors are or will be in need of help. Especially since most actors don't make a lot of money while trying to pursue their careers. So if you can, please make a donation to either the SAG-AFTRA Foundation or the Entertainment Community Fund.

Hiatus Watch: Glamorous and Survival of the Thickest

With the Barbie movie in theatres this week, I've been on a glam kick. I found two new shows on Netflix that I want to watch: Glamorous and Survival of the Thickest.

Glamorous is set in the beauty industry when an aspiring makeup artist lands a job at a big company. While Survival of the Thickest follows a fashion stylist who is trying to makeover her life following a really bad breakup. Both shows seem interesting and sort of center around reinventing yourself and taking chances. Beauty, fashion, friendship and romance, I can't wait to start watching these shows.

Glamorous (Netflix)

Starring: Kim Cattrall, Miss Benny, Jade Payton, Zane Phillips, Ayesha Harris, Graham Parkhurst, Diana Maria Riva, Michael Hsu Rosen, Kaleb Horn, Lisa Gilroy, Ricardo Chavira, Nicole Power and more

Creator: Jordon Nardino

Description:

Aspiring influencer Marco lands a dream job with a makeup mogul and begins a dazzling journey of self-discovery amid work chaos and romantic challenges.

What Have You Been Watching During Hiatus Season?

Happy Sunday! I was wondering what have you been watching for Hiatus Season?

So far I've watched the TV series, The Muppets Mayhem on Disney+, it's really good. I just loved watching as the show followed The Electric Mayhem, a zany ragtag band, who were helped by Nora Singh, a music executive and Gary "Moog" Moogowski, a superfan in getting their first album recorded. The Electric Mayhem had been touring and playing music for years but never quite got around to actually creating and releasing an album. That is until now.

There's only 10 episodes in the first season but it's was just so funny and interesting and weird as you would expect a Muppet movie or show to be. There was also a lot of mishaps, misunderstandings and music along the way to creating their album but in the end it was worth it. I really enjoyed watching this. Which is why I hope the show will eventually get renewed for a second season because I want to see more.

(The Muppets Mayhem)

I also watched the movie Flamin' Hot which is also on Disney+ (and Hulu) and it was also really good. I enjoyed watching every minute of this inspirational movie which followed Richard Montanez, who as a janitor at one of the Frito Lay factories had the brilliant idea to create a spicy version of Cheetos, the Flamin' Hot Cheetos.

Unfortunately, Richard had a job that's thankless and unappreciated and can make someone working these types of jobs go unnoticed by society. But what I love is that he didn't let that stop him, he took a chance and created a product that was unique. And then he took an even bigger chance (and risk) trying to get it on store shelves. Especially since the odds were not in his favor but he believed in it and so did his wife and kids and it ended up becoming a very successful product.

There are some questions and discussions on whether or not this movie is based on a true story. However, true story or not, this was a really good movie. I do have to admit that I'm a Flamin' Hot Cheetos fan, I don't eat them often but they are one of my favorite snacks. So to watch a movie about the creation of them was pretty cool.

Currently Reading for Tackle Your TBR Read-a-Thon book #5: Star Wars: Fatal Alliance

Happy Saturday!

After I finally finished reading and reviewing Ways to Make Sunshine by Renée Watson, I feel like I'm finally over my reader's block/slump. And I'm ready to get back to reading and continue my TBR Read-a-Thon, I still need to finish reading Nancy Drew: The Haunted Showboat by Carolyn Keene (it's the third book in the TBR Read-a-Thon).

With that said, the next book I'll be reading is Star Wars: Fatal Alliance by Sean Williams. I've really enjoyed reading these Star Wars Legend stories, I've only read seven so far but each one has been very good. And here's hoping Fatal Alliance will also be a good read.

Book: Star Wars: Fatal Alliance (The Old Republic book #3) by Sean Williams

Description:

“When I look into you, I see no loyalty. . . . I sense only tangled allegiances. . . . Given a choice, I would never trust you.”

From across the galaxy they’ve come: agents of both the Republic and the Sith Empire, an investigating Jedi Padawan, an ex-trooper drummed out of the Republic’s elite Blackstar Squad, and a mysterious Mandalorian.

An extraordinary auction has drawn them all together—in quest of a prize only one can claim. Each is prepared to do what he must to possess the treasure, whose value may be the wealth of a world itself. No one intends to leave empty-handed. All have secrets, desires, and schemes. Video: Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine Take The Friendship Quiz (GQ magazine)

I'm really looking forward to seeing the upcoming Red, White and Royal Blue movie which will premiere Friday, August 11th on Amazon Prime. Some early promotion (prior to the Actors' Strike), that the actors Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine did for GQ magazine is this fun little Friendship Quiz with surprisingly most of the questions are about food. This video really shows how good they're chemistry is because for a romantic comedy you don't want weird or forced chemistry because that would quickly ruin a movie.

Book Girl Thoughts: On the Writers' and Actors' Strikes

As with the Writers' Strike, I totally support the Actors' Strike, neither group should have to deal with terrible working conditions and being offered a terrible contract. I still can't believe that Deadline article where one of the Studio executives stated the AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers) evil plan of wanting the writers to run out money which will lead to the them losing their homes. And once that happens they will then be willing to go back to negotiating with the writers and can offer them a terrible deal. How evil are these overly paid CEOs of these studios that they are gleefully okay with people losing their homes? They probably feel the same way about the actors as well.

And now you have the Disney CEO stating that these strikes are disruptive and what the writers and actors want are unrealistic. However, I'm sure he has no problem excepting all the money that Disney gives him. I'm so glad that both the writers and actors are striking and I hope they win because the AMPTP could have ended these strikes before they even started by truly offering both groups better contracts.

I just wanted to post my thoughts and if you would like to show support to the writers and actors striking (as well as the teamsters and IATSE members affected by the strikes), please make a donation to the Entertainment Community Fund. Although there are some big names in Hollywood, there are so many more writers and actors who barely make do which is why they are fighting for a better deal.

Hen and Karen's Vow Renewal Ceremony Deserved More Time

Happy 9-1-1 Monday! I still find it disappointing that in the fifth season finale episode Starting Over, the Showrunner and writers wasted so much time on random emergencies that ran way too long. Instead, that time could have been used for Henrietta "Hen" and Dr. Karen Wilson's vow renewal ceremony. This was a scene that felt so shortchanged because it could have truly used more time. Because their renewal was lumped into the ending montage that focused on all the main characters instead of letting this moment have the time it needed to shine.

I really would have loved to have heard their vows or anything else the couple may have said during the ceremony. From what little that was shown of the vow renewal ceremony, it looked beautiful. But they needed more time devoted to this scene. I also would have loved if more of the reception was shown besides the Athena Grant and Robert "Bobby" Nash scene of the couple planning to finally go on their honeymoon. I would have loved to have seen Hen and Karen's first dance and not to mention the toasts their family and friends would have given in their honor.

And on one final note, to add to my point about shortchanged scenes, the same can be said for Athena and Bobby because when they got married back in the second season finale episode This Life We Choose, it was also during a montage scene. And it would have been nice to have seen more of their wedding as well.

(9-1-1 season 5 episode 18: Starting Over)

Book of Interest: Kill Creek

I found another interesting book, Kill Creek by Scott Thomas. It's a horror story set during Halloween about writes in a possibly haunted house. I'm trying to get over my reader's block/slump or whatever you want to call it by finding books that I'd want to read.

The cover totally caught my eye, especially the creepy house and the figures on the roof. And not to mention the description which really had me interested in wanting to read this. So I will be adding this to my list to buy and hopefully read soon.

Book: Kill Creek by Scott Thomas

Description:

At the end of a dark prairie road, nearly forgotten in the Kansas countryside, is the Finch House. For years it has remained empty, overgrown, abandoned. Soon the door will be opened for the first time in decades. But something is waiting, lurking in the shadows, anxious to meet its new guests…

When best-selling horror author Sam McGarver is invited to spend Halloween night in one of the country’s most infamous haunted houses, he reluctantly agrees. At least he won’t be alone; joining him are three other masters of the macabre, writers who have helped shape modern horror. But what begins as a simple publicity stunt will become a fight for survival. The entity they have awakened will follow them, torment them, threatening to make them a part of the bloody legacy of Kill Creek.

Video: WGA Barbie (Katie J. Stone)

The Writers' Strike is now in its 11th week and I commend the writers for continuing to fight for a better contract and with constantly creating fun and interesting strike themes. I love this Barbie theme strike that was during the Hollywood premiere of the Barbie movie. And WGA Barbie (writer Katie J. Stone) is right, the writers are the ones who create all the fun things we love watching.

As much as I can't wait to see the Barbie movie, it's more important that the writers get the pay they deserve.

Trailer: Red, White & Royal Blue

I think Red, White & Royal Blue is turning out to be a highly anticipated film for the summer. As someone who loves romantic comedies, I love that there has been so much interest in this movie which will premiere on Friday, August 11th on Amazon Prime.

I had planned to read the book it's based on, Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston before seeing the movie. No surprise, it's been sitting on my bookshelf for far too long and with the way my reading slump keeps returning, I may end up seeing the movie first. Anyway, this looks like a fun little movie that looks like it's full of hilarious antics, unexpected romance and political intrigue.

Red, White & Royal Blue (Amazon Prime)

Starring: Taylor Zakhar Perez, Nicholas Galitzine, Uma Thurman, Stephen Fry, Sarah Shahi, Rachel Hilson, Ellie Bamber and more

Director: Matthew LĂ³pez

Writers: Matthew LĂ³pez and Ted Malawer

Based on: The book Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

Description:

Red, White & Royal Blue is a romantic comedy centered around Alex, the president’s son, and Britain’s Prince Henry whose long-running feud threatens to drive a wedge in U.S./British relations. When the rivals are forced into a staged truce, their icy relationship begins to thaw and the friction between them sparks something deeper than they ever expected.

Buried Alive (9-1-1, Bones and The Rookie)

A fan created this really amazing gif set of characters Edmundo "Eddie" Diaz and Evan "Buck" Buckley from 9-1-1, Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan and Seeley Booth from Bones and Lucy Chen and Timothy "Tim" Bradford from The Rookie. It highlights the classic romantic trope of a character buried alive and the love interest (or potential love interest) digging by hand trying to get to them.

Out of the three shows, I've only watched 9-1-1 (completely) and The Rookie (partially, I'm still a few seasons behind) but I do have the Bones complete series sitting on my shelf. And for a while now I have been planning to watch it but so far I haven't. However, over the years I've gleaned enough information that I have a general understanding of the show and characters. Anyway, I think the similarities or parallels between these scenes and the characters are interesting. Because Buck, Booth and Tim were so desperate to get to their partners that they were digging by hand. And not to mention how scared Eddie, Bones and Lucy felt being buried alive and desperately wanting to get out. Which made the relief after everyone was safe and reunited so palpable (albeit a little later for Buck and Eddie).

I also found it interesting that unlike Tim and Booth, Buck wasn't able to free Eddie by digging for him since Eddie was trapped 40 feet underground. However, Eddie did find a way to save himself and was eventually reunited with Buck (and the other firefighters). So far, two out of the three couples are canon. I'm still hoping for that to happen for Buck and Eddie because why use a classic romantic trope if not to eventually make them canon.

Episodes:

- Bones season 2 episode 9: Aliens in a Spaceship

Characters Reading: Bert (Sesame Street)

I feel bad for Bert, he was trying to enjoy a quiet moment reading too bad he didn't get a chance to continue it. Because it was impossible for Bert to continue reading once Ernie was there. I don't know how Ernie didn't realize how annoying he was being? Especially since he was making so much noise. I guess the title for this should have been Characters Trying to Read because Bert certainly didn't get a chance to get much reading in.

Happy Fourth Day of the Month! (+ a Geeky Holiday List)

Happy Fourth Day of the Month (formerly known as the 4th of July)!

This is the second year celebrating this new holiday. I used to celebrate Independence Day or the 4th of July but how can I when it continues to be meaningless especially with the steady and continuous loss of our rights. So, now I celebrate the Fourth Day of the Month, it gives me time to reflect and simply enjoy the day. Also, spend time with my family and friends and eating good food. I'm not sure if I'm going to enjoy some of the Fourth Day of the Month's sales but I might see if there's something I want to get.

I noticed that many others are not celebrating the former holiday as well and some of the things many said they're doing are:

- Boycotting the former holiday
- Speaking out against our constant loss of our rights
- Going on a monetary strike (by not buying anything today)

Since it's the Fourth Day of the Month, I created a Geeky Holiday List to celebrate. It features the fourth episode of each season of several shows.

Art of the Day: Bobby Nash and Athena Grant

Artwork: Bobby and Athena by jayh.sketch (jay.halstead macarenaandrad3)

Happy 9-1-1 Monday!

Looking back at the first season, I can see where the writers were setting up all these significant little moments throughout the season between Police Sergeant Athena Grant and Fire Captain Robert "Bobby" Nash. And these moments would eventually lead to the big surprise ending of the first season finale. I still think they lucked up on the great chemistry between the characters (and actors) because otherwise this relationship that was heating up (no pun intended) in the second season would have fallen flat and fizzled out real quick with both the characters and viewers.

Happy Disability Pride Month

With the way the Supreme Court is rolling back so many of our rights in the United States, it can be difficult to feel happy. But we can't let them steal our joy. Which is why I want to show support for the disabled community because July is Disability Pride Month.

This month (and every month) we should all be striving for an inclusive society that allows everyone to be seen, understood and allowed be themselves. Even more so for all the marginalized communities such as the disable community that unfortunately tends to be overlooked in our society. It's important for people with disabilities to be proud and visible within society and in every community.

Happy Disability Pride Month!

Weekend Film: Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

I know it's been a while since I've posted a Weekend Film. There hasn't been a lot of movies that interest me enough to go out to the theatre. However, I have watched some interesting movies at home: The Perfect Find, Extraction 2 and few others. But now there is a movie I'm willing to go to the theatre for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

I'm a big Indiana Jones fan (no surprise there). And I really want to see this movie because it feels like it's going to be a wonderful and exciting end to the story of Indiana Jones. I'm also glad to see Karen Allen's name because I couldn't imagine Marion Ravenwood not appearing in the final movie. I also would have loved to have seen Short Round played by Ke Huy Quan to appear but it doesn't seem like that's going to happen. That is unless he shows up as a surprise cameo. Regardless, I really can't wait to see this.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

Director: James Mangold

Writers: Jez Butterworth, John-Henry Butterworth, David Koepp and James Mangold
